Designing Small Homes: An Interior Design Studio Project
Kenneth R. Tremblay, Jr.1, Katharine E. Leigh1, Laura H. Malinin1, Amy M. Huber2

Abstract: Small homes may become more popular in the future due to rising costs and
resource shortages.
For some population segments smaller homes are especially attractive such as retired
households wanting to downsize. A studio project was developed and given to sophomore interior
design students in which they were asked to design a home of 1,000 square feet or under which
was functional and aesthetically pleasing. During class discussions students were provided with
a number of design ideas that they could utilize in their designs. The projects displayed a variety
of design techniques to visually enhance the size of space. The projects “My urban farm” and “My
small house” were highlighted. Students were excited with their attempts to create small homes
for themselves.

buildings that are constructed and designing an optimal distribution that can meet the needs
of their inhabitants are some of the requirements and challenges faced, day after day, by
architects around the world. Through the implementation of certain materials, the definition
of the morphology or even the geographical and natural conditions of the terrain, it is
possible to carry out various strategies that make it possible to design homes with the
comfort that their users need and in the smallest amount of square metres possible.
Smart Rainwater Management: New Technologies and Innovation

https://www.intechopen.com/chapters/69772

This chapter describes about the smart water quality issues in a smart city and
some of the research advances in handling those issues. Among them it investigates the
rainwater harvesting technologies and some of their practical applications.
Rainwater collected from ground catchments may be poor in quality with
respect to the bacteriological quality, whereas if rainwater is collected from well-
maintained rooftop catchment systems and storage tanks, then that water is suitable
for drinking. If water is collected from a dirty surface, then the collected water can be
made utilizable by using a proper filtering system. Thereafter, it can be used for some
the following purposes like drinking, culinary, bathing, laundry, toiletry purpose, watering
gardens, compost making, birdbaths, recharging ponds and pools, washing vehicles,
fire extinguishing, etc.

TERMS AND SAMPLE DESIGNS

Types of Rainwater Harvesting Systems:
Water Butts
collecting water into small containers or tanks directly from the drain pipes or natural rainfall.
The water collected with this method is primarily used for gardening functions.
Direct Pumped
A DIRECT-PUMPED SUBMERSIBLE
-a pump is placed inside the underground water tank. Water is then pumped directly to WCs,
among other household appliances.
DIRECT-PUMPED SUCTION SYSTEM
-pump is not dipped within the tank; instead, its located within a control unit. Even better, this
unit where suction is placed also manages the backup from the mains water supply. And that
eliminates the need to send the mains water to the underground tank.
Indirect Gravity Systems
water movement entirely depends on gravity
-the pump is only used to move water to a header tank or refill the high-level tank, then the
supply to the outside outlets becomes the role of gravity.
Indirect Pumped Systems
-uses boosted pumps to move the harvested water to a preferred point. The best part is that the
booster pumps used can be tailored to match the needs and requirements of a building.
Gravity Only Systems
-use no pumps; thus, no energy or effort is needed.
-The major disadvantage of this method is that water can only be collected if the collections
tanks are placed below the level of the gutters. Meaning, water would only be collected from the
part of the roof that has gutters above the collection tanks.

IDEABOX – SAGE HOUSE
IdeaBox is like the Ikea of prefab houses—the design possibilities are endless! The Salem,
Oregon-based company’s designers are experts at using the prefab and modular housing
system to create cost-effective, sustainable, and imaginative housing. Each IdeaBox home is
designed with sustainable bamboo flooring and energy-efficient construction, and the Sage
House is a perfect example. This 1,200-square-foot, two bedroom and two-bath wonder cottage,
with a base price of $228,000, is flexible, rugged, and spacious.
While the Sage House isn’t big, it’s definitely not small! A large living space is anchored by a
chef-inspired kitchen. Large sliding glass doors open up the whole house to light and fresh air.
Two large bedrooms are opposite each other with access via simple openings in the wall,
closed off with barn doors. For large living in a smaller, sustainable space, the Sage House is
the perfect fit.

RK-SHELTER
Ark-Shelter was created by architecture students from Belgium who “desire to reinvent how
people live their lives.” Simple and elegant boxes bookended with walls of glass, these zero-
impact designs connect with nature, are built to last and save energy. On the inside, you’ll find a
built-in platform bed adjoining a large picture window, plus a fireplace, table for two, full kitchen,
and bathroom. The floor-to-ceiling windows on either side of the structure offer plenty of natural
light. Also, with sides that fold open, the home becomes an extension of nature.
Not only does this prefab come fully furnished (with everything from appliances to kitchen
utensils), but it can also be shipped and installed practically anywhere. Plus, you can make it
completely sustainable with their rainwater collection system (that filters water three times) and
solar power panels. The company does not divulge prices, but our research found that the
smallest models, the 396-square-foot Shelter S and the 386-square-foot Lodge, have a base
price of about $77,000 and $60,000, respectively. Editor’s Note: Ark-Shelter homes currently
only ship to Europe.
Tiny house solar panels and other renewable energy
sources
Energy and its sources are other crucial issues to solve when building a small house. You need
energy for heating the house and water, to be able to cook and have electricity for appliances and
other needs. Tiny house solar panels are probably the most popular among alternative energy
sources. They consist of several solar cells, which absorb the light and transform It into electricity.
They can be placed on the roof or around your house, on spots exposed to sunlight, and they are
most often used for water heating. There are many tiny house solar panel types, varying in sizes,
efficiency, durability, and price. Another option is wind turbines converting wind energy into
electricity. Usually, they are used by countries for large-scale energy collection, however, there
are types of smaller wind turbines that can be used for household use. Getting a rebate for solar
panels will help you save money.
