A time I dealt with extreme precipitation was actually this summer. I worked at a camp in Glen Cove which
is an area known for constantly having heavy rains; It started abruptly and lasted 3 hours, the whole entire
camp had to stop and evacuate inside. It still hadn’t stopped when it was time to go home and everyone
went running to their cars and ended up completely soaked. Trees were falling and roads blocked and the
traffic to get home was awful. Everyone around that area knew it was going to rain but didn’t know to how
extent that day and how bad it was actually going to be. We anticiped a heavy rain but not that heavy or
to last for such a long duration and pause our entire day.

An example of an extreme precipitation event that I experienced was Hurricane Sandy. Hurricane Sandy
hit New York in late October of 2012 as a category 3 hurricane. I lived in Huntington on Long Island
during this time with my family. The high winds, lightning, and heavy rainfall caused oak trees to fall
throughout my neighborhood, blocking the roads and destroying land, power lines, and houses. There
was news coverage a few days before the storm advising residents to take precautions for the hurricane,
however, I believe there should’ve potentially been evacuations. At the very least, it should not have
taken 3 weeks for the power to come back on and 2 weeks for the fallen trees to get cleared.
