Question 1
Read the article carefully and write a summary of the reasons for euthanasia to be
allowed. Your summary should be in about 100 words.
The first and most important reason to support euthanasia is that some patients who have no
chance to recover do not wish to be kept alive on machines. These patients are kept alive by
life-support machines such as respirators to help them breathe and feeding tubes to provide
them with nutrition. A well-known example in the United States is the case of Terri Schiavo, a
young woman who went into a coma in 1990. Mrs. Schiavo was able to breathe on her own, but
her brain was dead. For fifteen years, she was kept alive by feeding tube. After eight years of
seeking treatment of her condition, Michael Schiavo, her husband, asked the courts for
permission to remove her feeding tube. He said that his wife had told him she would not want to
be kept alive artificially when there was no hope of recovery. Clearly, when there is absolutely
no hope of recovery, society should allow a person in Terri Schiavo’s condition to die if that is
The second reason to support euthanasia is that medical costs in the United States are very
high. Keeping a person alive for years and years requires round- the-clock care in a hospital or
nursing home. According to an administrator at a local hospital, daily hospital room charges
average from $5,000. Nursing home care is also expensive as it can charge up to $4,500 per
month. These high costs can cause serious financial problems for a family. Therefore, not all
families can afford to pay for these medical services. As a result, euthanasia can be an option to
The third reason is euthanasia improves the quality of life. Most people fear death, but a large
part of that fear comes from uncertainty and the worry that it might be preceded by agonizing
pain. If people knew exactly when they were going to die and knew for a fact it would be
painless, they will not be stressful, consequently they would lead a meaningful and fulfilling life.
By allowing people to choose the how and when of their death, it is guaranteed that they will live
what remaining life they have to the fullest, free from the pain of anxiety.
The forth reason for allowing euthanasia, is because other alternatives to end life are horrifying.
When people think about death, most of them imagine passing peacefully away surrounded by
loved ones, but death is not like that. It is usually slow, painful, and undignified. Some people
experience so much pain that it becomes unbearable for them. So, for those people, the choice
they have now is unimaginable agony for years to end. By refusing people the “right” to end
their own lives, the pain and indignity is increased to a terrible extent.
The final reason to support legalizing euthanasia is that the family suffers both physically and
emotionally. Hospital or nursing home staff give terminally ill patients only minimal care. Thus,
the family must spend time, caring for the special needs of their loved one. A patient, for
instance, who had been in an accident was kept alive on life-support machines for eight years
needed someone to stay with him 24 hours a day. During those years, his parents took turns
Often, patients who are either terminally ill or in an irreversible coma wish to die. Taking
care of them is a financial, physical, and emotional burden for their families. Therefore, families
should have the right to ask doctors to turn off life-support machine or to remove feeding tubes.
