Family life

Type of family

Doctor harshad kamat grew up in a nuclear family consisting of his mother father sister and himself .
His father was a doctor and had a transferable job , that meant that their home was never one place
and kept moving across India. they have lived in and travelled to many places , some of them
including Daman and Due , Bicholim hence it was only the four of them with rare occasional visits
from his grandparents, aunts and uncles who would stay for a while but eventually leave . he never
got to experience a typical Indian joint family but he enjoyed moving from place to place and it made
him the outspoken extroverted person he is now

Now he lives in his nuclear family of his wife and two daughters in margao where he also operates
his very well known clinic which is flooded with patients every day from all over margao and south
goa in general ranging from newborns to 15 to 17 year olds.

Educational background

Doctor Harshad Kamat had Passed his 10 th standard boards from Vasco and proceeded to choose
science as a stream for 11th and 12th standard at Dempo college and the joint Goa medical college.
He stood third in the entire state of Goa for his 12 th standard boards making his family and close
ones very proud of him.

He explained in those days there were only 1 seat available for Goan students for colleges in Bombay
which he ended up getting with immense hard work and dedication. he finished his MBBS and MD in
grant medical college aa well as ended up standing first place in the Bombay and earning his gold
medal. He then proceeded to do his diploma in DCH and DNB for specialization.

Inspiration for carreer

He said that he always wanted to become a doctor right from the beginning because of his father.
His father was his biggest inspiration for him in reaching where he is today . he explained how as a
kid he would admire his father as he would see him get repect from people get their blessings and
courtesy. Doctor Harshad says that the respect that a doctor gets is vastly different from the respect
that a rich person gets . a rich person may get respect for only the money in his wallet. One might be
nice to his face but might start talking about him behind his back . there is a major difference for
getting respect because of the money you have or the powerful seat you are in and respect for a
certain individuals that doctors or teachers seem to get .a doctor may not make huge amount of
money but he is living a life with respect and decent amount of money .

Why did he decide to be a pediatrician ?

After one finishes a five year course of MBBS he has an option between choosing a career in medical
field or surgical field. Doctor Harsad decided to choose the medical field as he was interested in it
from the beginning and did not want to pursue surgical . He says he always found peadiatrician
challenging and that was what attracted him therefore he took up that challenge and began his
journey

Work experience

After he finished earning his md degree he joined Induja hospital in Bombay working as a registrar.
He explains that those types of jobs were time bound for 6 months and were taken up in the first
place for experience and exposer. Private hospitals had given him the exposer to the equipment and
materials not provided in government hospitals .

After that he went abroad to muscat royal hospital giving him tertiary level experience and after that
he came back to goa in 1995 .
After he came back to goa he started with his own clinic in Baboy Commerce Center in margao itself
and the he moves his clinic to bombi plaza and then finally he started his clinic in  Da Costa Rd,
Comba which has been running successfully for many years

Struggles

Doctor harshad explains that to be successful in this field of work you need to get through many
struggles ,some of them are

time management

this seems to be the biggest struggle for him even after being in this profession for years .he explains
how in the past when he would be practicing and would suddenly get calls for a cesarean surgery or
any other request and that too at odd times .he exclaims that this is problem faced by most doctors

catering to the expectations of the parents, children and other hospitals

as doctor harsad is a pediatrician which means his patients usually vary from the age of 1 to 15 and
hence he has to cater to the needs and expectations of the children aswell as their parents to treat
their kids in the best possible way. These may include expectations of immediate service ; usually
parents come in with their child having a fever and want it treated immediately, This may not be
serious but it is his duty to justice to the child and their parents .

it is his duty aswell to cater to the needs of other hospitals when they need help

staff management

as doctor kamat is not only a pediatrician but also runs his own, very successful clinic he faces issues
with staff . he has 15 staff members in his clinic which is a cause of stress for him as he faces a
pressure on managing them.

Health issues

As a busy doctor he says that he barely gets time for maintaining his health and excersing like going
for runs and cycling . for a person of age 56 he needs to take care of his health which he doesn’t get
adequate time for .

Benefits of the job

Job satisfaction

He says the best part of his job is to see a child happy and healthy at the end of the day.when he
treats his patients making the child recover from his condition and getting the parents blessing in
return gives him the maximum pleasure.

Doctor harshad explains that job satisfaction is the most important to succeed in any profession

Respect

Being a doctor gives you great amount of respect from society as well as your peers , Doctor Harshad
had learnt this from a very young age as he saw his father growing up ,who was also a doctor and
became his role model growing up.

General limitations in the field

Doctor Harshad Kamat says like any other field this one too has general limitatons to it some of the
limitations he experiences are

Finite age group

As a pediatrician he caters to children from birth to maximum 18 years of age which is different
from other doctors who cater to patients from 18 till the time they pass away. For them they have
one patient for which they look after for almost all of their life in contrast to pediatricians where we
take care of children till they turn 18 .doctor harshad says that eventually as the children grow old
they will outgrow us pediatricians . thus the age group of his patients are finite

Fertility rates

As we all know in this dat and age people are not reproducing and having kids as they were before .
fertility rates are declining and the number of children born are fewer . As number of children
become fewer the number of pediatricians are increasing thus the cake gets smaller and the slices
get thinner .

When he started his clinic in margao he was the 10 th pediatrician in margao ,today there 25
pediatricians in margao . but as Doctor Harshad says this is the fact of life and this problem can we
seen in almost any field especially in this day and age where competition is tough.

How did covid-19 effect your life and profession

He says covid was a difficult time for him and the rest of the world for a various number of reasons .
some of them included:

Firstly, as doctor it was a problem as covid 19 was new and like all of us he too didn’t know much of
the virus but with more time he did understand it and how it worked

Secondly, the problem was from the clinic perspective . they had to keep the clinic closed for a
period of time especially during lockdown. After they opened it again they had to follow all the
procedure which were new to all like sanitize the whole clinic ,wear masks and suits throughout etc.
with all these restrictions like suits ,working and treating a child with that get up was immensely
difficult as well as the fact that they had to be in that get up continuously for 3 to 4 hours.

Another problem was that as a pediatrician, the children don’t understand etiquettes as they are to
small. they would not know how to cover their hand while coughing and end up coughing and
sneezing on your face .so here as a family member he had to be a little selfish and think and make
sure he would not spread it.

Future plans

He says that the future plan is to try and continue how the things are going for him and try to excel
in the profession he chooses too. Doctor harshad is the only person in the state of goa who is part of
the national level faculty and is called to give lectures to students all over the country .giving lectures
and imparting knowlge on young minds is his passion and in the coming years he would want to
teach more .

He does not want to increase his practice or make his clinic better ,but he wants to do the best that
he can . today he is one of the most senior pediatricians and sometimes other paediatricians get
their kids for treatment to him. He says that in pediatrician you have to be updated about everything
as it is a constantly evolving field . so imparting knowledge to others as well as learning himself is
something very important to him . .he wants to keep doing what he is passionate about which is
seeing a child happy and healthy and secondly imparting knowledge .

Milestones

How did he realize he was one of the best pediatricians in Goa?

He says that there is no number which says i the best or someone else is .how do you know who
really is the best ? when I was younger my mom took me to doctor Harshad because someone told
her that he was the best . if she would ask someone else they might have recommended some other
doctor.

Doctor Harshad says the best way to figure out the best pediatrician or doctor is to ask another
one . but not one in margao because if you ask a pediatrician in margao who is the best they will
obviously say themselves .they will tell the truth as long as it doesn’t threaten them.

When Doctor Harshad got peer recognition or came to know that there were doctors from the north
recommending him and telling their patients that he was a good pediatrician he realized that he was
the best in his field.

Another reason doctor Harshad this was because almost all the pediatricians in Margao would ask
him questions for their own difficulties because doctor Harshad Kamat was one of the most senior
pediatricians.

But he says that more than being the best it is the relationship you maintain with your clients . if one
things he or she is the best and starts acting like their the king or queen in an arrogant manner that
will be their down fall. As a doctor we need to be humble and nice to everyone .

Academic

Firstly as a student all his milestones have been academic . he had got 25 th rank in the 10th standard
and in 12th standard he proceeded to get the 3 rd rank in Goa which is not easy specially in the science
stream . he then did his MBBS from the top most institute of Bombay “Grant medical college”. After
that he got a gold medal in MD and DCH which were his diplomas . he did this with immense hard
work and dedication making his family and loved ones proud.

Family

Having a family and birth of his children if the biggest milestone for him and there is nothing more
important than his family. He has a lovely family with a wife and two daughter who are also planning
to become successful doctors like their father

Job satisfaction

After having children and a family then comes the milestone of a having a set practice of your
profession . he says there is nothing better than having money but having job satisfaction is also
important and having both ensures you will be happy in your life . he goes on and explains how
some people are earning a good salary and making good money but they hate what they do, these
people by the age of 30 end up quitting their job .

What was my experience interviewing

This was my first time ever interviewing some one and I was nervous at first but Doctor Harshad
Kamat made me feel very comfortable as if I were talking to a friend . this interview was very
knowledgeable for someone like me and taught me a very important lesson that nothing can be
accomplished without hard work and dedication as well as sharing light on the importance of job
satisfaction. along with this Doctor Harshad was very kind and humble enough to let me interview
him even with his busy schedule . I was very lucky to interview one of the best pediatricians in Goa
and enjoyed it a lot .
