CHAPTER I

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), including HIV,

are at epidemic proportions especially among urban
racial/ethnic minority youth, who generally tend to be
unprepared to deal with the consequences of sexual
activities. (Lieberman LD, 2000). Furthermore, although
newly diagnosed AIDS cases have decreased overall in the
United States because of the current standard of HIV/AIDS
care (improvement in HIV/STD-related prevention,
treatment and care programs); yet this decrease has not
been relatively uniform among students. populations, age
groups, and the vulnerable populations that is exposed to
the STDs.(Centers for Disease Control and Prevention,
2003)

Distribution of free condomsis likely to have a

substantial impact on the transmission of HIV. We
estimated that the annual incidence risk of HIV among PSV
patrons decreased with 7.62% due to the intervention,
which corresponds to 42 new infections and 207 DALYs
averted annually. Similar patterns were seen for the
other infections, but due to the lower prevalence of
hepatitis C and the lower severity of the bacterial
infections, the reduction of these infections contributed
only minimal to the reduction of burden of disease. This
impact could potentially be even larger, as more
beneficial results could be obtained by increasing condom
uptake and especially condom effectiveness, as these
factors have a large impact on modelled annual incidence
risk of STIs. ( Kosten Seksueel Overdraagbare
Aandoeningen. 2017)
Background of the Study

Though many methods of prevention of STI/HIV are

available, condoms remain of utmost importance. They have

gone a long way from the oiled silk paper used by the

Chinese and the hard sheaths made of tortoise- shell used

by the Japanese to the latex condoms as of today.

The breakthrough came when the rubber vulcanization

of the process that was invented by Charles Goodyear and

eventually the first ever rubber condom was made. The

condom offers maximum protection( more than 90%) against

HIV, Hepatitis B virus and N.Gonorrhoea.

They also offer protection in scenarios when

alternate sexual practices are adapted. The female condom

in the only female driven contraceptive method available

today. Graphene and Nano lubricated condoms are new in

the market and others in futuristic approach may include

wearable technology/Technology driven condom and

invisible Condoms. Both Correct and Consistent use of

condoms needs to be promoted for HIV/STI prevention.

Objective of the Study

The main objective of this study is to determine if

there is an impact between students' parent involvement
and their academic performances. To become knowledgeable
about the effects on every student's development in
school. In addition, to alleviate the problems that they
will encounter or had encountered inside their family
that greatly affects their academic succession.

Also to determine what are the other things that might

affecting their performance in the school grounds besides
in their own family involvement. what are the things that
is affecting them that causes them to become more better
or less effective on the class or might less effective or
not learning at all if we get the answer on this dilemma
better we can help others because they are going to be
aware that they have a big impact on student’s life. We
want to determine what are the other things that making
them feel anxious and lose focus on the room and the
effects of it whether it’s a positive effect or a
negative effect that they are dealing every day.

Our objective is to know every possible things that

might affecting them and on how impact that student’s and
parents that they should be aware on and how for them to
be more efficient and to have knowledge and how they are
going to handle it in the most easy way and to find a lot
of effective ways how they can impact their student’s in
a good way and for them to avoid stress thinking about
stress whenever they are in the school grounds.

Significance of the study

• To the Students: A student’s knowledge on the use of

condoms and the benefits that this can offer to a person
also to know every possible ways help you benefits .
• To the Teachers: To have a further information about
the use of sex education subjects and by doing a condom
distribution and doing seminars to the students to keep
them alert and stay protected at all times.
• To the School: This study could serve as a data to
improve the students and the more the program that the
facilities can provide the more it can helps the many
numbers of students can be protected in the campus where
professor and students being educated .
• To the Future Researchers: This study may serve as an
academic reference for the future researchers with the
related topic.

Statement of the Problem

The following are the research questions in this study.

1. What is the demographic profile of the respondents

in terms of?

1.1 Age
1.2 Gender

2. Do you know these common sexually transmitted

discease

2.1 Human Papillomavirus is the most common STD

2.2 Chlamydia. Chlamydia is the most reported STD,
which is an STD that must be reported to local health
departments when diagnosed. ...

2.3 Gonorrhea.

3. Why awareness is important when it comes to sex

education especially contraceptives?

3.1 Awareness
3.2 Protection

4. When is the most effective way to use

contraceptives correctly?
4.1 Before the intercourse

4.2 After the intercourse

5. Do you agree that this What is the most effective

way to educate the students and the ways and for them to

be protected from the discease and what should the school

do to protect it’s students?

5.1 Have a proper sex education programs

5.2 Doing a how to properly use of sexual

contraceptives seminars atleast once in every 3 months

5.3 Have a condom distribution after the seminars

Assumption and Hypothesis

This study is conducted based on the following

assumptions:
 That the school administration will going to receive
more information about the senior high school
students in distribution of condom and to know what
they need to do to fulfil this certain topic or
problem.
 That the teachers will be aware that the senior high
school students should be aware about the
distribution of condom on the campus so they can
read this research and to learn a lot about it the
ways they can be more protected to adjust their
teaching techniques based on the needs of the
students in sex educations subjects that they should
provide that this is a serious topic.
 That the principal will support the needs of the
students in by distributing condoms and by educating
them at least every year and to have more seminars
as possible.

Scope and Delimitation

This study is focused only to individual selected by

the researchers that will serve as the respondents for
the research questionnaire that prepared by the
researchers themselves. This study will gather data and
evidence whether they are approve on the Perception of
senior high school students in distribution of condom and
what are their thoughts about it .
The respondent of this study are selected twenty-
five (25) Grade 11 and twenty-five (25) grade 12 Senior
High School students of the present school year 2022-
2023. The researchers will gather data along ( )
This study conducted to know the what is the thought
among senior high school students, as stated of
effectiveness of distributing condoms on senior high
student as sexual protection and as their sex education
to prevent every possible  Sexually transmitted
infections (STIs), also referred to as sexually
transmitted diseases (STDs) and as an individual person
can explore the possibility of the production as a low
cost and effective.

Significance of the Study

This study aims to give benefit, contribution, and the

importance of this research. The result of this study is
significant to students, parents, teachers and two
institutions; the DepEd and the National Youth
Commission.

Students, to know what are the effect of stds and the

importance of using contraceptives to help themselves to

avoid them and for them to be aware and also share the

knowledge they can gain in this research to help family

and others. This study may serve as a guide to enlighten

the mind of all students about the importance of

awareness and contraceptives and condom distribution to

the students.

Teachers, to know if their way of preventing stds and

if not what are the things they should focusing to be

teaching and should do to help the students more than

ever and what are the reasons for a student to have more

awareness to prevent of spreding the discease.

Parents, the research is also beneficial to the

parents, it may remind them of their role as a parent to

their children who are studying and as an individual that

awareness and prevention is better than cure to help

their students and children to be protected. This

research will show the possibilities that may happen to

their children if they do not guide them.

The Department of Education or DepEd, is an executive

department of the Philippine government that is

responsible to manage and govern the Philippines system

of basic education. And this research may help the DepEd

to be aware of the student status regarding the sex

education and contraceptives and condoms to the students.

The DepEd may understand that their role on educating the

students in every aspects.

Definition of terms

Condom -  Work by keeping semen (the fluid that contains

sperm) from entering the vagina. The male condom is

placed on the penis when it becomes erect.

Sexually transmitted diseases - are infections

transmitted from an infected person to an uninfected

person through sexual contact. STDs can be caused by

bacteria, viruses, or parasites.

HIV - The human immunodeficiency viruses are two species

of Lentivirus that infect humans. Over time, they cause
acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, a condition in which
progressive failure of the immune system allows life-
threatening opportunistic infections and cancers to
thrive.

AIDS - is a chronic, potentially life-threatening

condition caused by the human immunodeficiency virus
(HIV). By damaging your immune system, HIV interferes
with your body's ability to fight infection and disease.

Epidemic - An epidemic is the rapid spread of disease to

a large number of patients among a given population
within an area in a short period of time.

hepatitis C -  is a liver infection caused by the

hepatitis C virus (HCV). Hepatitis C is spread through
contact with blood from an infected person. Today, most
people become infected with the hepatitis C virus by
sharing needles or other equipment used to prepare and
inject drugs.

Human Papillomavirus - A type of virus that can cause

abnormal tissue growth (for example, warts) and other
changes to cells. Infection for a long time with certain
types of human papillomavirus can cause cervical cancer.

Chlamydia - is a common sexually transmitted disease. It

is caused by bacteria called Chlamydia trachomatis. It
can infect both men and women.

Gonorrhea - is a sexually transmitted disease (STD)

caused by infection with the Neisseria gonorrhoeae
bacterium. N. gonorrhoeae infects the mucous membranes of
the reproductive tract, including the cervix, uterus, and
fallopian tubes in women, and the urethra in women and
men.
