and other similar uses at Jamshedpur and Pune works.
1. DESIGNATION:

Types Remarks
SS-4040-10 = Type 10
Double walled tubes without any plating or coating.
SS-4040-20 = Type 20 Double walled tubes zinc plated 12 to 15 microns
and vellow passivated.
SS-4040-30 = Double walled tubes zinc plated 12 to 15 microns
Type 30
and olive Qreen passivated.
SS-4040-40 = Double walled tube zinc plated 8 to 12 micron with
Type 40
irredescent vellow passivation, as per SS8451 S-2
2. ABBREVIATION:
For drawing / purchase order:
TUBE 100.0. x 0.7 thk. SS4040-30.

3. MATERIAL:

a) Low carbon, cold rolled electrolytically copper deposited strips conforming to

grades like AISI 1008 / AISI 1010 or other equivalent International Standards.
b) The copper plated thickness on strips should be 4 to 6 microns for uniform
brazing through out and should be taken for guidance only.
4. MECHANICAL PROPERTIES:
Ultimate Tensile Strength: 29.5 kgf/mm2 min.
Yield Strength: 17.5 kgf/mm2 min
Elongation (L=50.8 min) : 25% min
5. MANUFACTURE:
The tubing shall be made from steel strips, shaped into the form of a double walled
tubings after electrolytic copper plating. These are then brazed in a controlled
atmosphere without any additional brazing material. The brazing shall be uniform with no
evidence of a bead either the inside or outside of the tubing. If required, the tubes may
be drawn and annealed.

6. SURFACE QUALITY:
The inner and outer surface of the tube should be smooth and scale free. Flakes, bulgings or
rolling defects should not be present. Minute rolling marks are objectionable if they affect the
applicability.
7. DIMENSIONAL REQUIREMENTS AND TOLERANCES:
Outer Diameter: +/- 0.05mm
Wall thickness: +/- 0.03mm
Straightness: 0.25% length of the tube
8. SURFACE PROTECTION:
As per clause 2, the surface protection is to be mentioned in the purchase order.
9. PERFORMANCE TESTS:
9.1. EXPANSION TEST:
0.20xD min ('D' is the outer diameter of the tube ), as per DIN 50135
9.2. FLARING TEST:
The cut length should have deburred and squared ends. It should be possible to form a double
flare E & F as per DIN 74234. Flared end should not show any defects like cracking, splitting,
separation etc.
9.3. BENDING SHEAR TEST:
The cut piece of the tube is bent by hand in the form of a hair pin (with seam on inner side) &
sheared by reverse bending at bending radius, neither should the walls of the tube separate nor
should the seam get cracked.
9.4. HIGH PRESSURE TEST:
From every consignment a few tubes should be tested by fluid pressure upto bursting. Pressure
should be increased continuously.
Outside Wall thickness Bursting Pressure Permissible operating internal
dia (mm) (mm) Kg/cm2 Pressure (Kg/cm2)
4 0.7 1220 500
4.75 0.7 1010 410
6 0.7 600 320
10 0.7 450 . 180
9.5. NON DESTRUCTIVE TESTING:
The tubes shall be checked 100% for brazing and surface defects by inline non-destructive
methods during production.
9.6. SALT SPRAY TEST:
The cut samples of the plated tubes shall be subjected to salt spray test as per SS8451 & its
relevant parts. The samples should not show any sign of rust after test as stipulated below:
Coating type Salt spray test life
Type 20 48 hrs (without white rust)
192 hrs (without red rust'
Type 30 96 hrs (without white rust)
240 hrs (without red rust'
Type 40 96 hrs (without white rust)
I 240 hrs (without red rust).
Note: The appearance of black patches during salt spray test on zinc plated surface
shall not be a cause for rejections. .'

10. MICROSTRUCTURE:

a) The brazing of the double wall should be tested on samples from each consignment and the
brazing layer should be free from defects over the entire section.
b) The grain size of the tubes should be from 5 to 8 (ASTM grain size) in brazed condition.
11. PACKING & DELIVERY:

A) For Sea worthy Transport:

The tubes should be adequately protected from rust and damage during transit by suitable
packing arrangements. The tubes should be protected at both ends with plastic caps.15 or 20
nos. of such capped tubes should be bundled together and enclosed in the polythene bags.
Such bags should then be spirally wound with polythene coated paper (one side only) over
the entire length.
The bundles so formed as stated above should be stacked in a water proof polypropylene
bags along with bags of dehydrants kept at a uniform distance along the length. It is then
crated in the wooden boxes coated with water proof paper.
B) Inland Transport: The ends of the bundy tube should be protected with plastic caps. 15 to 20
nos of such tubes should be sealed in polythene bags. Such bundles should be crated in
wooden boxes coated with water-proof paper alongwith bags of dehydrants kept equivalent
along the length at three locations.
