Main Group 77 Valves and Accessories

Introduction

Since the latest Internet version of MESC (version 14c), changes have been carried out in
MESC main group 77 including items from DEP 31.38.01.14-Gen piping classes.

These changes include the following:

265 New MESC Items


206 Deleted MESC items, replaced with new MESC items
2429 Modified MESC items

1. 265 New MESC items and 206 deleted and replaced:


a) New 347H stainless steel valves for 650 °C
b) New Carbon Steel PTFE lined check and ball valves for sulphuric acid
c) (Low temperature) Carbon Steel and 316 Stainless Steel gate and ball valves for
Ethylene Oxide service:
- For Class 150: Propylene Oxide service valves created, without cavity relief
requirement.
- For Class 300: Ethylene Oxide service valves deleted and replaced by Ethylene
Oxide/Propylene Oxide, without cavity relief requirement.
d) Valves with Aluminium Bronze body or valve disc deleted and replaced by new
MESC items: (ASTM B148 UNS C95400 deleted as a material option)
e) DN200 BW Ball valves created for Piping class 31472, and FB Ball valves for Piping
classes 11007 and 1308.
f) New Valves created for Prelude:
- Trunnion Mounted and Floating ball valves
- Butterfly valves
- Dual Plate Check Valves
- Gate/Globe/Check valves
g) New DN25 duplex slimline Class 150/300/600 Process to instrument valves
h) New super duplex API 6A 103.5 Mpa (15,000 psi) gate, globe, check, ball and
process to instrument valves.
i) Deleted and replaced valves for thickness correction in SI/USC values and bolting
corrections

2. 2429 modified MESC items:


a) Ethylene Oxide Valves, other than gate and globe valves: Ethylene Oxide service
changed to Ethylene/ Propylene Oxide service
b) Stem/gland ring/nut materials modified for Monel 400 valves to replace incorrect
ASTM (for bolting) with correct ASTM (for forgings)
c) Added ASTM A216 WCB and ASTM A216 WCC as an option for body material for
minus 5 °C lined butterfly valves.
d) nut material corrections to suit bolting material for gate, globe, ball, plug, butterfly and
process to instrument valves.
e) Added steam service and MESC SPE 77/303 to steam service gate/globe valves
bellow sealed DN15-50 (NPS 0.5 -2)

SPEs are updated to reflect the latest edition of the base standard with technical changes as
follows:

1.1 77/101 (API 602, gate globe, check valves)


The changes to this document is to specify ASME B16.34 minimum wall thickness requirements
for tapped or drilled holes in body necks, add radius and surface finish requirements for flange-
to-body transition radius, clarified packing gland eyebolt pin retention, exclude the 4th edition of
API 607 for the fire test and to add handwheel dimensions/positioning requirements.

1.2 77/102 (API 600, gate valves)

The changes to this document are to include requirements for the wall thickness of local areas,
for tapped or drilled area of the body neck region and handwheel clearance, exclude the 4th
edition of API 607 for the fire test and to clarify gland eyebolt pin retention.

1.3 77/103 (BS 1773, globe valves)

The change is to update the handwheel clearance requirement, add qualification testing of
elastomers and exclude the 4th edition of API 607 for the fire test.

1.4 77/105 (BS 5154, gate, globe, check valves, copper alloy)

The changes to this document is to specify ASME B16.34 minimum wall thickness requirements
for tapped or drilled holes in body necks, add radius and surface finish requirements for flange-
to-body transition radius, to add handwheel dimensions/positioning requirements and to update
handwheel operator maximum allowable force and update wording of operator retention bolting.
Corrected reference to the base standard

1.5 77/107 (API 599, plug valves)

The change is to change the revision of the base standard, exclude the 4th edition of API 607 for
the fire test, to add force requirements, to add handwheel clearance requirement and to add
qualification testing of elastomers.

1.6 77/110 (ISO 17292, ball valves)

The change is to add radius and surface finish requirements for flange-to-body transition radius,
clarify open/close indication of the valve, to add API 607 as an option for the fire test, to update
the operating force requirement, to ensure sufficient flange nut clearance adjacent to
body/closure bolting, to add angles to lever handles to avoid clashing when two valves are bolted
together, add handwheel clearance requirement, to add tapped or drilled hole requirement for
body neck region, to add gearbox orientation and to add qualification testing of elastomers.

1.7 77/111 (API 603, gate valves)

The changes to this document are to add the requirements for handwheel clearance, to clarify
the local wall thickness requirements and to clarify the tapped or drilled hole requirements for
body necks, exclude the 4th edition of API 607 for the fire test and handwheel clearance and to
clarify gland eyebolt pin retention

1.8 77/120 (IOGP S-562 / API6D Ball valves)

Overlays: This revision to add the requirements for handwheel clearance, to clarify pressure
design compliant with ASME B31.3, to clarify requirements for tapped or drilled holes in the body
neck, to specify demonstration of the special tool for top entry ball valve disassembly, add angles
to lever handles to avoid clashing when two valves are bolted together, to clarify production
fugitive emission testing, torque measurements and functional testing for all QSL levels, to
modify Duplex and Super-Duplex Impact testing qualification level.

Underlays: This revision is to modify requirement for the provision of extension pup-pieces on
butt-weld end valves, removal of hollow section material restriction on handwheels and clarified
documentation requirements for QSL-4.

1.9 77/121 (IOGP S-611 / API 600 gate Valves)

Overlays: This revision to add the requirements for handwheel clearance, to clarify requirements
for tapped or drilled holes in the body neck and to modify Duplex and Super-Duplex Impact
testing qualification level.

Underlays: This revision is to clarify requirement for gland eye bolt retention, to remove
requirement on Body-to-bonnet Joint and clarified documentation requirements for QSL-4.

1.10 77/122 (IOGP S-611 / API 603 gate Valves)

Overlays: This revision to add the requirements for handwheel clearance, to clarify requirements
for tapped or drilled holes in the body neck and to modify Duplex and Super-Duplex Impact
testing qualification level.

Underlays: This revision is to clarify requirement for gland eye bolt retention, to remove
requirement on Body-to-bonnet Joint and clarified documentation requirements for QSL-4.

1.11 77/130 (API 6D, Ball valves)

The change is to correct reference of DN 38 to DN 40, to modify applicable standards for design
and calculations for pressure-containing elements, to modify the operating force requirements, to
ensure sufficient flange nut clearance adjacent to body/closure bolting, to add the handwheel
clearance requirement, to clarify minimum wall thickness requirement, to add the requirement for
demonstration of the special tools for top entry ball valve disassembly, add angles to lever
handles to avoid clashing when two valves are bolted together, to include integral trunnion
covers in pressure containing parts definition, to clarify requirement for welding procedure
qualification of weld overlays on carbon steel lipseal housings, to harmonize pup-piece lengths
with IOGP, to add gearbox orientation, to add qualification testing of elastomers and to include
low pressure gas testing of soft seated valves.

1.12 77/131 (API 6D, through conduit slab and expanding gate valves)

The change is to correct reference of DN 38 to DN 40, to modify applicable standards for design
and calculations for pressure-containing elements, to clarify the minimum wall thickness
requirement, to modify the operating force requirements, to clarify requirement for welding
procedure qualification of weld overlay on carbon steel lipseal housings, to harmonize pup-piece
lengths with IOGP, to add gearbox orientation, to add qualification testing of elastomers, to
include low pressure gas testing of soft seated valves and to correct the gas testing clause
references.

1.13 77/132 (API 6D, swing and axial flow check valves)

The change is to correct reference to DN 38 to DN 40, to add the minimum wall thickness
requirement, to clarify requirement for welding procedure qualification of weld overlay on carbon

steel lipseal housings, to harmonize pup-piece lengths with IOGP and to add qualification testing
of elastomers.

1.14 77/133 (API 594, Dual Plate check valves)

The change is to clarify the minimum wall thickness requirement.

1.15 77/134 (API 609, Butterfly Valves)

The change is to update the revision of the base standard, to exclude the 4th edition of the API
607 as an option for the fire test, to add the minimum wall thickness requirement, to add the
handwheel clearance requirement, to add seat configuration table and to add qualification of
elastomers.

1.16 77/135 (IOGPS-730 / API 526 Pressure Relief Valves)

The change is complete re-write of the entire MESC SPE to make it an amendment/supplement
to IOGP S-730.

1.17 77/136 (API 6A, gate, check, ball valves)

New MESC SPE for API-6A valves

1.18 77/160 (ASME B16.34, gate, globe, swing check valves)

The change is to update the allowable stress criterion for stems, to add the handwheel clearance
requirement and to add qualification testing of elastomers.
1.19 77/170 (Process to Instrument Valves)

The update is to clarify bolt holes and slotted bolt holes requirements for DN 20 valves, to clarify
the minimum wall thickness requirement, add radius and surface finish requirements for flange-
to-body transition radius, to add qualification testing of elastomers and to add the lever clearance
requirement.

1.20 77/190 (Lined Ball and Check Valves)

The change is to update the maximum size for lined ball and check valves and to lower the
minimum temperature of carbon steel valves with ASTM A105 or ASTM A 216 WCB/WCC, to
add the handwheel clearance requirement and to update handwheel operator maximum
allowable force. USC units are added where they were missing.
1.21 77/200 (Valves in low temperature and cryogenic services)

The changes are to align same MESC wording on force for seating and unseating.
1.22 77/212 (Valves in high temperature service)

The change is to correct the typo in the option for bolt sizing, addition of minimum heat
dissipation/lagging extension length up to 650 °C. and to update handwheel operator or lever
maximum allowable force.
1.23 77/213 (Valves in low temperature and cryogenic service with lagging extension)
This revision is to align same MESC wording on force for seating and unseating.

1.24 77/300 (procedure and techn. Spec. for DVT of Industrial valves)

The change is to add the requirements for documentation and strip down testing for top entry ball
valve.
1.25 77/300a (synopsis of procedure and techn. Spec. for DVT of Industrial valves)
The change is to editorially change “type acceptance testing” to “design validation testing” and to
remove dated reference to MESC SPE 77/312.
1.26 77/300b (Valve qualification range)
This revision includes revised codes for product standard in line with changes in design
specification for valves.
1.27 77/300C (synoptic tables)
TAT changed to DVT

1.28 77/302 (Valves – general Requirements)


The main changes are to require hot yield testing for cast C276 valves, to specify corrosion
testing to ASTM A262 Practice E if the screening test to Practice A fails, to clarify stabilising heat
treatment requirement, to delete the exemption for heat treatment for butt weld Cr-Mo forgings
and castings in steam service, PWHT to be done also as per AME B31.3, to adjust Charpy
impact test acceptance criteria and new pup piece lengths table added to align with IOGP.

1.29 77/303 (Valves in special service)


The change is to change “BAM or WHA Certificate” in “BAM or WHA test report”, to restrict the
supply of oxygen valves to approved suppliers and to add for steam that emission testing is not
required. Also, to add Propylene-Oxide service alongside Ethylene-Oxide and to add PWHT shall
be done for sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide (caustic soda) or amine as per ASME B31.3.
1.30 77/312 (ISO 15848-2, Fugitive emission production testing)
The change is to change the title of the MESC SPE 77/300 in Part III
