In this lesson, you will discover the Communicative Styles and how,
when, and where they are used.
Communication helps us to express our thoughts and feelings.
Having your own styles in conveying messages and knowing these styles
lead to a better understanding and successful transfer of ideas.
The purpose of the different styles of speech is to help people know
the specific approach they should use in every situation, person, and place.
Communicative styles are patterns of speaking characterized by distinctive
pronunciation, vocabulary, intent, participants, and grammatical structures.

A communicative style, according to Martin Joos (1976), a linguist and

German professor, it refers to the form of language that the speaker utilized, which
is characterized by the level of formality. Still, according to Joos, speech style is
identified into five types: frozen, formal, consultative, casual, and intimate.

Communicative styles (first 2 styles)

1. Frozen style
Also known as fixed speech, it is the highest form of communicative style, which is
often used in respectful situations or formal ceremonies like Shakespearean plays,
weddings, funerals, and more. It uses the complex grammatical sentence structure
and vocabulary that is only known by experts in that field

Examples:

National pledge, anthem, school creeds, marriage ceremonies, speech for a state
ceremony

2. Conversational Style

Conversational style breaks most of the grammatical rules. It is aimed at the target
audience and addresses them as such. It's informal in form. Uses language that
resembles conversation. It is warm and natural, easy to understand. The objective of
this style is to engage the listener or readers.

Example:

• Most people prefer having a conversation on how to change a light bulb than
having to read an instruction manual.

• If you are a marketer on social media, selling some products.

• A conversation with a group of people on a threaded discussion forum.
