This module was designed and written as your guide. It is here to help you how
to use conditional sentences type 3 correctly. The scope of this module permits it
to be used in many different learning situations.

After going through this module, you are expected to:

1. Define the third conditional sentence;


2. Identify the structure of a third conditional sentence;
3. Determine the idea expressed by a third conditional sentence; and
4. Use third conditional sentences to speculate about the future result of a
possible, yet unlikely, present condition.

A sentence expressing condition and its result is called conditional sentence.


Basically, it is composed of two clauses. The subordinate clause also known as the “if”-
clause and the main clause or result clause.

Conditional sentence type 3 talks about unreal situation in the past. It is


contrary to the fact; things which did not happen in the past and impossible to be
fulfilled. This type of conditional sentence is used to express regret or criticism.

IF-CLAUSE RESULT-CLAUSE
1. If I had phoned you last night, I would have reminded you to stay.
2. If it had rained hard, I might have not visited your place.
3. If she had taken her medicine, she could have felt better.
If the “if”-clause comes first, a comma (,) is usually used. However, if it comes
after the main clause, no need for a comma.
 If you had listened to my advice, you would have finished your
homework.
 You would have finished your homework if you had listened to my advice.

The third type of conditional sentence is structured this way:

Raul had to be in school early for it was an examination day.
Unfortunately, his alarm clock malfunctioned, and he overslept. He
