1 Introduction
This policy defines milestones and activities from the initial product release introduction to its
eventual retirement, assisting customers with planning their upgrade and/or migration strategies.
Progress OpenEdge (OpenEdge) is the Application Development Platform (Platform) comprised of a
comprehensive collection of enabling products and tools to assist with the development,
deployment, and run-time operation of mission-critical business applications.
Progress OpenEdge Pro2 (Pro2) is a software product running on the OpenEdge Platform. Adopting
new Pro2 releases requires assembly, integration and in many cases additional development to
achieve the desired level of customization. Progress is offering consulting services 1 to assist with
these steps if needed.

2 Forms of Delivery
New Pro2 releases may include bug fixes and new features, and, unless stated otherwise, they are
cumulative within the same version family (see section 4 Versioning).

Note: Unlike OpenEdge Platform, Pro2 releases:

a) are not designated as LTS releases, and
b) don’t receive Updates. That function is performed by the new, replacement Pro2 releases.
New Pro2 releases can be introduced at the same time as full OpenEdge Platform releases, or
independently of the full Open Edge Platform releases. Progress, in its sole discretion, determines
the timeline of new Pro2 releases, taking into account the nature of the issues to be resolved and
the market demand for the new features.
Every Pro2 release comes with its own, independent from OpenEdge Platform, installer, and is
designed to support backward compatibility (see section 3 Backward Compatibility) mode for
interoperability with specific OpenEdge Platform LTS releases. For example, Pro2 6.2 release can be
installed on its own and is guaranteed to work with OpenEdge 12.2.

3 Backward Compatibility
When a new Pro2 release is made available outside OpenEdge Platform LTS release, it may include
new or modified features, including those that are uniquely designed to take advantage of new or
modified capabilities introduced in the OpenEdge Platform non-LTS release. Backward
Compatibility mode ensures correct operation when such new Pro2 releases are used with
compatible OpenEdge Platform LTS releases.
Please refer to the published PAG for the latest information on the Pro2 Backward Compatibility.
Pro2 may be shipped with other OpenEdge products (e.g. PAS for OpenEdge), the “Additional
Products”, that receive periodic Updates of their own. Progress recommends Pro2 customers to:
a) Monitor the availability of new Updates for the Additional Products, and
b) If electing to apply these Updates, test the changes in a safe pre-production environment
before adopting them for mission critical use.

4 Versioning
Pro2 releases use their own, independent from OpenEdge Platform, versioning schema.
Each Pro2 version family is backward compatible with one or more OpenEdge Platform LTS releases
specified by Progress. New releases within the same Pro2 version family are ensured to work with
the same OpenEdge Platform LTS release(s). Once the version family reaches its retirement stage,
as communicated by Progress, no further Pro2 releases for this version family will be offered.
As of the time of publishing, Pro2 6.x and Pro2 5.x are the only two version families available.
Earlier Pro2 version families, e.g. 4.x, have been retired.

5 Support Scope
Among other benefits, paid maintenance and support agreement for Pro2 entitles customers for
technical support and complementary access to the newer product releases when they become
available.
Progress will provide commercially reasonable efforts to resolve product issues and answer
questions about Pro2 releases that are under the maintenance and support agreement. If changes
to the product are deemed necessary, including bug fixes, they may, at Progress discretion, be
introduced in the subsequent replacement Pro2 releases, as long as the version family is not
retired.
Since Pro2 changes are always delivered as full releases, already implemented Pro2 releases cannot
be patched. Typically, the existing implementations of Pro2 include high degree of customization
and integration with other applications. This inevitably takes toll on the effort involved in replacing
one Pro2 release with another. Progress is offering consulting services to upgrade Pro2
implementations.

5.1 Post-deployment Pro2 Modifications

Once deployed, customers can continue using their Pro2 releases for as long as they want, even
when the corresponding version family is retired. If any changes to already deployed Pro2 releases
are needed, whether these are classified as bug fixes or improvements, customers have two
options:
a) Upgrade to the latest available Pro2 release, or
b) In some cases, customers may be able to make the necessary changes on their own or with
the help of professional consultants. While such field implementations may be considered
a viable option, please understand once modified, these Pro2 deployments cannot be
supported by Progress Technical Support. If customers are considering going down this
path, Progress advises discussing the technical support terms with the professional
consultants hired to make Pro2 deployment changes.

6 Third-Party Support
Please refer to PAG for platforms supported by Pro2.
