Reading and Writing Decimal Numbers
› Decimal – it is a number that can be expressed as a
fraction, whose denominator is a power of 10.
Place Value Chart of a Decimal
Remember:
› Read decimals like you read whole numbers. State the
place value of the last digit. The decimal point is read as
“and.”

› Write the decimals through ten thousandths by writing


four digits after the decimal point. When there are no
whole numbers, write a zero before the decimal point.

› Zero can be used as a placeholder for decimals.


Rounding Off Decimal Numbers
› to round off decimals, look
at the right of the digit
being rounded. Round up
if the digit is equal or
greater than 5, otherwise
round down.
› Drop all the zeros to the
right of the rounded
decimal numbers.
Comparing and Ordering Decimal Numbers

comparing whole numbers. Use
>,<, or = symbols to compare
decimals.
› when comparing decimals, look
at the digits by place value
from left to right from the
decimal point and find the
place where the digits differ.
The digits with the greater value
show greater decimal number.
› a set of decimals can be
arranged in ascending and
descending order.
