A. Compute for Population Change (60 pts)

1. In a forest, the current population of white-tailed deer is 600. You want to

know the change in population of the deer over the past five years.
Wildlife biologists have kept track of the births, deaths, and so on for the
last five years. That information looks like this:
A. There were 300 new deer born.
B. 55 deer moved in from another nearby forest.
C. There were 800 deaths, both natural and from hunters or
predators.
D. No deer moved away from the herd.

Number of births B = 300

Number of immigrants I = 55

Number of deaths D = 800

Number of emigrants E=0

Formula: N = (B + I) – (D + E)
N = (300 + 55) – (800 + 0)
= 355 - 800
= -445

600 - 445 = 155 is the change in population growth of white-tailed deer over the
past 5 years.
2. Suppose we had a population of 100,000 individuals. Suppose in one year
there were 1000 births, and 500 deaths. Compute for:
A. What percentage of the population were births?
1000
=0.01 x 100 %=1 %
100,000

B. What percentage of the population were deaths?

500
=0.005 x 100% = 0.5%
100,000

Assume immigration equals emigration (15=15). Compute for the population

change and express as a percentage. Thus, conclude that:
1000−500 500
= =0.005 x 100% = 0.5% net growth
100,000 100,000

I. This population would be growing by 0.5% this first year.

II. That means that after one year, there will be 500 more individuals
than the previous year.
III. So, after one year, the population would be 100,500 individuals.

B. Compute for population density
