Visit London's Science Museum
A. In 1851, the Great Exhibition was held in London's Hyde Park to promote
science and technology. Some of the profits of this very successful event were spent on
buying land for a museum in the South Kensington district of London. Part of this later
became the Science Museum.
B. The collection contains a wide range of exhibits, from one of the earliest
locomotives - Stephenson's Rocket, from 1829 - to the latest space technology, and from
ancient Greek medicine to the most recent developments in biochemistry and genetics.
And unlike traditional museums, where you can look but not touch, the Science Museum
provides a very hands-on experience of science and technology.
C. The IMAX cinema in the museum gives you the feeling of being 'inside the
picture', with two- and three-dimensional films about anything from high speed sport to
the life of insects. The Science Museum also uses its website for educational purposes,
with what it calls 'exhiblets' - literally, small exhibitions - such as one about atomic
clocks.
