Inductive Grammar Teaching

The Basic Steps:

Step 1: Present several examples that

illustrate a particular concept.

Step 2: Students must observe how the

concept works from these examples.

Step 3: Students are expected to

recognize the rule of grammar naturally

Teaching & Assessment of Grammar
Inductive Teaching

Retention of grammar concepts is the main goal

of inductive teaching with teachers using

techniques that are known to work cognitively

and make an impression on student's

contextual memory.

Teaching Implication:

Student-Centered Learning Approach

Teaching & Assessment of Grammar
Deductive Teaching

Deductive Grammar Teaching

The Basic Steps:

Step 1: A teacher gives an in-depth

explanation of a grammatical concept

before students could encounter it in their

own writing.

Step 2: After the lesson, students practice

through worksheets and exercises.

Teaching & Assessment of Grammar
Deductive Teaching

Deductive teaching methods drive many

students away from writing because of the

tediousness of rote learning and teacher-

centered approaches.

Teaching Implication:

Guide on the side not Sage on the stage

4. INTERACTIVE

PRESENTATION

PRACTICE

PRODUCTION
PRESENTATION
This involves building a situation

that requires a natural and logical

use of a new language. It is in this

stage that students know what

they will learn and why.

Example:

Our lesson for today is about

Nouns and Pronouns.

Teaching & Assessment of Grammar
Functional-Notional Approach
PRACTICE
This involves testing the

procedure so students can be

familiar with the language focus

taught by the grammar teacher.

Example:

Now, let's have a short quiz

to test your knowledge.

Teaching & Assessment of Grammar
Functional-Notional Approach
PRODUCTION
In here, students shift from

"learners" to "users" of the

language. Teachers create

learning situations to use the

language focus.

Example:

Class, let's have a role play.
