SMART EXPIRY DATE RECOGNITION

ABSTRACT:
A deep learning solution for optical character recognition, specifically
tuned to detect the expiry dates that are printed on the packaging of food products.
This method can be used to reduce food product wastage, having a significant
impact on the design of smart refrigerators, especially useful for people with vision
difficulties, by combining it with a speech synthesis engine. A smart expiry
recognition system also sends an automatic notification to the corresponding user’s
smartphone and a voice alert message.

INTRODUCTION:
Currently, food waste is one of the worst problems affecting the world.
While the products is purchased, we make it a point to check the date of expiry,
however over a period of time we ignore to validate if the products available in our
house are still under the period of expiry. An application for smart refrigerators that
allows scanning the expiry date of a product, using images captured by the camera
of a mobile or fixed device, would encourage to reduce in wastage of food products
and would allow visually impaired persons to find out this information without the
help of others. By using this system, we can reduce the wastage of food.

OBJECTIVES:
➢ To detect and notify the expired food product

➢ Reduce the wastage of food products

➢ Help the visually impaired people, avoid consuming expired food products.
METHODOLOGY:

The Optical Character Recognition (OCR) algorithm is the process

that converts an image of text into a machine-readable text for detecting
expiry dates with very high accuracy. The solution for detecting expiry dates
in images consists of three important processing steps. The first step is to
extract the expiration dates by using a deep state of the neural network.
During the second step, delimiting the regions of interest obtained in the
previous step will be cropped from the image. Finally, the text will be filtered
using filtering algorithms, so the device recognizes the text and separates them
from the complex background. Now, the image has been successfully
converted into digital text. This information is stored in an application. It
generates notifications of soon-expiring products through the user’s
smartphone. This system can also be used for blind people by voice message
alert using a speech synthesis engine.

TESSERACT OCR:
Tesseract OCR is one of the most popular open-source engines for
optical character recognition. This system is more specialized in optical character
recognition for scanned documents. OCR extracts text from images and documents
without a text layer and output the document into a new searchable text.

SCENE TEXT DETECTORS:

Scene Text Detector is a task to detect text regions in the complex
background and labels them with rectangular bounding boxes.

GOOGLE CLOUD VISION API:

Google Cloud Vision API is a service that gives application
developers access to ready-made computer vision models that run in the cloud. The
product’s expiry date will be stored in the cloud.

FOOD TRACK APPLICATION:

The Food Track application that runs on a smartphone and keeps
track of expiry dates. The application allows users to quickly scan the expiry date of
a product using the camera. It will receive notifications when the products are close
to their expiry date.

CONCLUSION:
The Smart Expiry Date Recognition system allows scanning the expiry
date of a product, using images captured by the camera or fixed devices. This would
support reducing the usage of expired food products and would allow visually
impaired persons to find out this information without the help of others.
With the advent of technology, all the things around us are getting
smarter. The above-depicted model of this smart system is cost-effective and can be
implemented in homes, food shops, etc.
