DESIGN STUDIES
• Design studies
• Design Studies allow you to quickly evaluate and compare
the structural performance from different design scenarios.
A single SimSolid Project file can contain multiple Design BASELINE Study – this is
the source for all material
Studies each with their own unique set of geometry and properties, connections and
analyses. analysis conditions

• Every time geometry is imported, it is placed into a new

design study and SimSolid will attempt to reapply existing
material property, connection and analysis definition data.
The source for this data will be the BASELINE design Each time new
study. geometry is read in, the
data attributes from the
baseline study will be
• The first design study defaults to BASELINE but this can applied here
be changed at any time by selecting the right mouse
button (RMB) menu Set as baseline on any design study
root node in the Project tree.

IMPORTING DESIGN STUDY GEOMETRY

• Importing design study geometry
• Importing design study geometry is easy and can be done using either a “push” (from SolidWorks or FUSION plugins) or a
“pull” (from Onshape or STL) methodology.

• Within SolidWorks, simply select the Open in SimSolid button on the add-in panel. This will transfer the current active
assembly to SimSolid. A dialog allows you to specify which Project to add it to. Each transfer will place the active
SolidWorks geometry into a new SimSolid Design Study. This makes it is easy to do quick “what-if” geometry changes
and then evaluate and compare the performance impact in SimSolid.

• Obtaining Design Study geometry from Onshape or other CAD files is even easier. From within the current SimSolid
Project, select either the Import from cloud (Onshape) or Import from file (CAD) buttons on the main toolbar and
browse to select the desired geometry to import. Each import is placed in a new Design Study branch of the Project tree.

• Note that you can easily mix and match between different CAD sources. One SimSolid Project can have CAD data from
Onshape, SolidWoks, or any other supported CAD format.

DESIGN STUDIES - MANAGING ASSOCIATIVITY

• Design studies
• Every time geometry is imported, it is placed into a new design study and
SimSolid will attempt to reapply existing BASELINE material property,
connection and analysis definition data

• Items that cannot be reapplied will be marked in RED

• All red entities must be resolved before a new analysis can be started

• For contact conditions, SimSolid will bond automatically. Review to make

sure this is what you want. Either, RMB select then pick Accept contact
condition(s) in red or double-click to Edit

• For boundary conditions, double-click and reselect the location (face,

edge, spot, etc.)

MAINTAINING MATERIAL CONNECTION AND ANALYSIS DEFINITION DATA

• Maintaining material, connection and analysis definition data

• When adding new geometry to an existing SimSolid project, SimSolid will reapply any existing material
property, connection and analysis definition data. The source for this data will be the BASELINE design
study. The BASELINE study is indicated as shown.

MAINTAINING MATERIAL CONNECTION AND ANALYSIS DEFINITION DATA

• Maintaining material, connection and analysis definition data

• The first design study defaults to BASELINE but this can be changed at any time by selecting the right mouse button
(RMB) menu “Set as baseline” on any design study root node in the project tree.

• With only a few exceptions, all analysis entities are supported. Even so, there are instances where mapping may be
ambiguous. Any items that cannot be reapplied will be marked in red in the project tree.

• All red entities must be resolved before the new analysis can be started. For connections and contact conditions,
SimSolid will use automatic settings to reapply missing connections. Review to make sure this is what you want. Either,
select using the right mouse button (RMB), then pick “Accept contact condition(s) in red” or double-click to Edit.

• For boundary conditions in red, simply double-click to open the definition dialog and reselect the missing location (face,
edge, spot, etc.). If the current selection is still appropriate, simply select OK to approve the change. The red will be
removed and the new analysis can be started.

DESIGN STUDIES - COPYING ANALYSES

• Analyses may be easily copied between design
studies.

• RMB select the analysis and pick Copy to and the

location target.

• Static analysis contact and boundary conditions can be

copied to a new non-linear analysis. RMB select the
analysis and pick Copy to non-linear analysis

NOTE: When doing nonlinear analysis, you have the option to

use follower loads. Simply double-click the load to Edit
and select the follower icon next to the load value.

RESULTS COMPARISON USING FAST RESULTS SWITCHING

• Results comparison using Fast Results Switching
• Fast results switching can be used to compare results from two different design studies.
• First, display an analysis result, such as a safety plot, contour plot or deform animation, in the graphics
window. This can be done from either a saved bookmark or from the results plot icon on the analysis
workbench toolbar.
• Then, pick on another analysis in the project tree.
• The graphics window will instantly update its display to the new geometry and analysis results. Switch
back and forth as quickly as you want.

Step 2: Create, complete and run 2nd Design Study
a) Import file from …\INSTRUCTOR-DEMO\CH8\Pullup_bar_V2.step to create a new
Design Study in the same Project tree

b) Compare this Design Study with the previous one: except for vertical support brackets,
geometry is identical. SimSolid intelligently instances identical geometry to minimize
resources required. This makes the database smaller and the solutions faster
