Unit 4- Teacher as a Person in Society

MODULE OVERVIEW

TEACHERS, truly are the backbone of society. They are professionals who are regarded
as role models that should abide by society’s standards. And that is offer guidance ,
dedication and give young people the power of education. Because of teachers, countries are
able to further develop socially and economically. According to Lickona (1991), schools
and teachers should educate for character, especially through teaching respect and
responsibility. As teachers interact with students it is vital for them to serve as role models of
character by making professional judgments and decisions based on societal and moral
values.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

At the end of the lesson, the students are expected to;


1. Define what good moral character is.
2. Be able to explain the Preamble, Code of Ethics for Professional Teachers.
3. Enumerate the qualities and virtues of a teacher as a person of good moral character.

B. Teacher as Persons of Good Moral Character

What is Morality?

- It refers to the quality of human acts by which we call them right or wrong, good or
evil”. (Panizo,1964)
- It refers to the set of standards that enable people to live cooperative in groups.

Example: When Mario gets Pedro’s pencil without the latter’s permission, then
Mario’s action is wrong because it is contrary to the norm. STEALING IS WRONG.
A man’s action, habit, or character is good when it is NOT lacking of what is
NATURAL to man, that is, when it is in accordance to man’s nature.

Example: It is not natural for a man to behave like a beast or an

Man possesses intellect which makes them capable of thinking, judging and
reasoning. Moreover, they also have free will, that gives them the ability to choose;
unlike animals are bound by instincts.

What does good moral character mean?

-Good moral character is an ideal state of a person's beliefs and values that is considered most
beneficial to society.

What is a role model?

- A role model is someone others look to as a good example. A role model is someone who
is worthy of imitation — like your beloved teacher or a well-behaved celebrity.

Teachers are Role Models, but what are they modeling?

Teachers are duly licensed professionals who possesses dignity and reputation with high
moral values as well as technical and professional competence in the practice of their noble
profession, they strictly adhere to. observe, and practice this set of ethical and moral
principles, standards, and values. (Preamble, Code of Ethics for Professional Teachers)

ARTICLE XI – THE TEACHER AS A PERSON

Section 1. A teacher is, above all. a human being endowed with life for which it is the highest
obligation to live with dignity at all times whether in school, in the home, or elsewhere.

Section 2. A teacher shall place premium upon self-discipline as the primary principles of
personal behavior in all relationships with others and in all situations.

Section 3. A teacher shall maintain at all times a dignified personality which could serve as a
model worthy of emulation by learners, peers and all others.

Section 4. A teacher shall always recognize the Almighty God as guide of his own destiny
and of the destinies of men and nations.

A PERSON OF GOOD MORAL CHARACTER

How can you say that you are a person of good moral character?

1. Being fully human- you have realized substantially your potential as a human person.

2. Being a loving person – you are caring in an unselfish and mature manner with yourself,
other people and God.

3. Being a virtuous person- you have acquired good habits and attitudes and you practice
them consistently in your daily life.

4. Being a morally mature person – you have reached a level of development emotionally,
socially, mentally, spiritually appropriate to your developmental stage.

TEACHING CHARACTER AND MORAL VIRTUES

 Integrity- Teachers model integrity by choosing to do the right thing even when no
one is looking.
 Honesty. Teachers display honesty by telling the truth and acting in an honorable
way
 Trust -An honest person can be trusted. Trust is the belief in others that develops
whenever people fulfill their promises and commitments.
 Fairness- Fairness is closely linked with trust as students quickly learn whether or
not teachers discriminate against them or treat them disparately. Fairness requires
that all students have the same opportunity to meet the standards.
 Respect- Real respect requires that teachers care for those students toward whom
they might not have a positive feeling. Teachers who model respect will always
appreciate each individual students, even when the behavior of some may be less
than worthy of this respect.
 Responsibility- Responsible teachers are those who are accountable for their actions
and fulfill their duties. Responsible teachers are always well –prepared for each class
and provide constructive feedback to students.
