DesignaKnit CableLinks Overview

CableLinks are the means whereby DesignaKnit can be linked directly to your knitting machine so that
stitch patterns can be downloaded to electronic machines and all types of machine - electronic, manual
and punch card - can keep you abreast of where you are in the project and, where appropriate, give you
colour change and shaping instructions in the Interactive Knitting section.

The type of CableLink required depends on the machine in use, and it is important that you have the
correct Link for each machine you use. This is because the various machine manufacturers have used
different electronic criteria to program their machines and DesignaKnit has to communicate correctly
with each machine type of machine. Some of the older links have been superseded by newer versions, but
this does not mean that your existing cable is no longer viable: if you are upgrading from an earlier
version of DesignaKnit, your cable will still work with DesignaKnit 8.

Some of the CableLinks have USB connectors as standard, and for those of you with Serial Port
connectors, these can still be used as they are if you have a free Serial Port, or you can use a USB
converter to connect them to a USB port. The USB Converter is a cost-effective way of having more than
one type of Serial cable if you have machines that require different CableLinks as it can be used with
most of the Serial links. The majority of other USB peripherals are not as sensitive as knitting machines,
so it is important that the converter used is compatible with the CableLinks: those supplied by Soft Byte
Ltd have been tested with their CableLinks, but the company cannot guarantee success with those it has
not supplied, nor can it provide technical support for them.
DesignaKnit CableLinks are available for the following types of machine and pattern device:

Silver Reed/Studio/Singer, Knitmaster and PE1 Pattern Controller

Brother/KnitKing machines and PPD

Pfaff/Passap E6000 and E8000 machines

Punch card and other non-electronic machines

Magnetic Switch Links

These are so called because the feedback to the computer for Interactive Knitting is via a magnetic
switch fixed to the console of the knitting machine and activated by a magnetic arm fixed to the knitting
machine's carriage. This arrangement also means that you can get DesignaKnit to find the link and
configure the program for you. It is worth noting that even if the CableLink is not being used with the
magnets, it is still classed as a Magnetic Switch Link.

If you are connected to the Internet

Plug the cable into a free USB port. The Notification Area of your Task Bar will inform you
that a new device has been found and that the software is being installed.

This will be followed by a message to tell you the installation was successful and it will also
display the comport number which has been allocated.

If you are not connected to the Internet

Do not connect the CableLink yet

Close any open programs, including DesignaKnit, and insert the USB driver CD that came
with your CableLink. If AutoPlay is not enabled on your computer, you will see a dialogue
similar to this one:

Click on Run AutoPlay.exe to open the Install dialogue.

If AutoPlay is enabled, this will open automatically a few seconds after you insert the CD.

The English language options are at the top of the dialogue. Click on the option that is
appropriate for your version of Windows.

Now click on the option to install the USB drivers

InstallShield will guide you through the rest of the installation process. At the end, click on
the Finish button and close down the opening dialogue.

Connect the CableLink

Insert the USB connector of the Magnetic Switch Link into a free USB port. Plug the cable
into a free USB port. The Notification Area of your Task Bar will inform you that a new
device has been found and that the software is being installed.

This will be followed by a message to tell you the installation was successful and it will also
display the comport number which has been allocated.

Troubleshooting
If Windows does not install the drivers automatically, when Windows indicates New
hardware found you will be asked if you want to install them from a specific location. Use
the appropriate place on the dialogue to direct Windows to the CD.

If you get a message to the effect that the drivers are not compatible, click on Continue
anyway.

This will complete the first part of the installation and Windows will again show the
message New hardware found . If necessary, direct Windows again to the CD, and again if
necessary, click on Continue anyway.

This completes the installation, but note that some computers require rebooting after
installing USB drivers.

Note that DesignaKnit will remember the location of the link from session to session.

Updating the Drivers

If you are connected to the Internet

If the drivers you installed are more than a few months old, it may be advisable to check to see
whether there have been any updates.

Open Device manager following the instructions to find the COM Port number.

Double click on USB Serial Port to open the Properties dialogue. Click on the Driver tab and then
click on the Update Driver button.

Windows may then offer you the choice of automatically searching for updates or browsing your
computer: choose the Automatic option.

If your DesignaKnit computer is not connected to the Internet

First, you must obtain the driver file and copy it either onto the hard drive of your DesignaKnit
computer or onto removable media, such as a USB stick or CD-ROM which you can then insert
into that PC. You can download the current driver using a PC that is. Go to www.softbyte.co.uk
and follow links on the site to locate the file to download.

To install the update, follow the instructions for installing a new driver. When you double-click on
the driver file, choose the Modify option in the Windows dialogue.

Troubleshooting
If, after installing the USB drivers for the Magnetic Switch Links you try to use your CableLink and
Designer tells you that it cannot be found or, for some other reason it does not work, the first thing to
check is that the COM Port configured in Device Manager is the same as the one set in DesignaKnit's
knitting machine setup. Follow the instruction in the section headed Finding the COM Port number to
check this. If these settings don't match, change DesignaKnit's configuration to the same setting as
Device Manager's.

If that doesn't fix the problem, check the following points:

 Is the CableLink connected to the Computer?

 Is the CableLink attached to the Knitting Machine?

If the answer is yes to both of these, then check to see if Windows is recognizing the device.

 Follow the instructions for finding the COM Port Number to open Device Manager
 Is the USB Serial Port listed in the Ports (COM & LPT) section?

Corrupt or incomplete drivers

If the USB Serial Port is not listed in Device Manager, are there any other devices listed in that
section or in the one called Other Devices that are marked with an icon showing either a question
or an exclamation mark? Does the name include "Serial Port", "USB" or "Unknown Device"? If so,
this probably indicates either a corrupted driver or an incomplete installation.

To fix this:

1. Right-click on the item and select Uninstall from the menu offered. You should also select
the option to remove any drivers associated with the item.
2. When Windows confirms that item has been uninstalled, it is advisable to re-boot the
computer to clear any residual data.
3. Reinstall the drivers, following the instructions for a new installation.

Another device trying to use the same COM Port

If another unrelated device is trying to access the same COM Port, or the same Virtual Serial Port,
this will interfere with DesignaKnit's ability to communicate with the CableLink. The problem can
be fixed by allocating a different number to the Converter's Virtual Port.

Finding the COM Port number

Windows 7 and Windows Vista

Click on the Start button on the Task Bar and then on Control Panel. Depending on how
you have configured the view settings, you can then click on System and Security.

In the next window, select Device Manager:

Page 7
DesignaKnit 8 Machine CableLinks

A quick way of getting to the Device Manager is to click on the Start Button and then start
to type Device in the search box - when you see Device Manager listed in the results pane,
click on it. You can also use this method in the Search window of Control Panel.

Windows XP

Click on the Start Button and then on Control Panel; double-click on the System icon. In the
next dialogue, click on the Hardware tab and then on the Device Manager button.

A quick way of opening the System Properties dialogue is to open a My Computer Window,
and in the System Tasks pane on the left, click on View System Information.

When the Device Manager opens, make

sure that View/Devices by type is selected
and look for the Ports (COM & LPT) item
on the list and click on the arrowhead at
the left to open the list. You will see the
device listed as Prolific USB Serial Port...
and the allocated port number is shown in
brackets.

Make a note of the COM Port number and

return to DesignaKnit to configure the
knitting machine or pattern device setup.

Changing the COM Port number

1. Open Device Manager. To do this, follow the instructions given for finding the COM Port
Number.
2. Locate USB Serial Port in the Ports (COM and LPT) list and double-click on it to open the
Properties dialogue (or select Actions/Properties from the menu bar)
3. Click on the Port Settings Tab

4. In the Port Settings dialogue, click on the Advanced button

5. In the next screen, click on the down arrow by the port number to view the list of ports.
Even if they are not marked as 'in use' it is not advisable to select COM 1 or COM 2 as these
are often actual ports that Windows needs to access. DesignaKnit allows you to configure a
port up to and including COM 25.

USB Converter
Using the USB Converter gets over the problem that modern computers rarely have a serial port
anyway, and by creating a Virtual Serial Port you can use existing CableLinks to connect to your
knitting machine or device.

Combined with the Serial CableLink, especially if you have more than one type of compatible CableLink
for use with different knitting machines, it can provide the most economic solution to downloading and
interactive knitting as a single USB Converter can be used with a variety of Serial CableLinks.

The USB Converter is compatible with all versions of Windows from Windows 98 onwards (i.e. not

Why you should use the DesignaKnit USB Converter

A number of different USB-to-Serial adapters are available on the open market, and some of them are
offered at very attractive prices, but there is no guarantee that they will work with DesignaKnit
CableLinks. This is because the knitting machines for which Soft Byte Ltd has developed CableLinks
were not designed in the first place to communicate with computers, so our CableLinks and Magnetic
Switch Links have had to be specially developed and are therefore not standard serial devices. The USB
Converters we sell have been tested thoroughly to make sure they are compatible with the CableLinks
and we can therefore offer technical support if you have problems, which we cannot do with unknown,
untested brands.

You can use the Converter with the following Serial CableLinks:

Brother/KnitKing
BrotherLink 1
BrotherLink 1 with PPD Adapter (= BrotherLink 3)
BrotherLink 2
BrotherLink 3
BrotherLink 3 with KH940/950i Adapter (= BrotherLink 1)

Setting up the USB Converter

You should be logged on as an Administrator to install this software.

If you are connected to the Internet:

Connect the serial connector on your CableLink to that on the Converter, then plug the USB
connector on the Converter into a free USB port on your computer. You do not need, at this stage,
to have connected the CableLink to the knitting machine.

The Notification Area will show you a message to the effect that new hardware has been found
and, if you leave it, will search the Internet for and download, the appropriate drivers:

Depending on your version of Windows, this may then be followed by a second stage where
Windows reports that it has found new hardware - let Windows continue with the installation.
When the installation is finished, you can find the COM Port number in Device Manager.

If you do not want Windows to find the drivers, but would rather do so yourself, then click on the
message to view the status and then click on the option to skip the Windows search and follow the
instructions for the manual installation.

If you are not connected to the Internet:

You should be logged on as an Administrator in order to install this software.

Do not connect the USB Converter yet.

If you bought the Converter after you purchased DesignaKnit, use the CD that was supplied with
it, otherwise use the DesignaKnit 8 CD.

1. Insert the CD into the drive.

 If AutoPlay is enabled and the installation program starts, click on Cancel. Open a
My Computer Window and right-click on the CD drive icon and choose Explore,
Browse or Open in New Window from the menu offered.
 If Windows offers you the option to view the files on the CD, accept this option.
2. When the new window opens showing the files on the CD, double click on the one called
USB_Converter_DriverInstaller to run the program. If the driver has been installed
previously, you will be offered three options: Modify, Repair and Remove. Select Modify.
3. Click Next to proceed.

4. The driver will now be installed. At the end of the process, if the last dialogue suggests that
you restart the computer, leave this option selected. Not all computers/operating systems
require a restart, so do not be concerned if this is not offered.
5. Click on Finish. If necessary, wait until the computer has rebooted before moving on to the
next phase.

Connecting the USB Converter to the Computer

Insert the Converter into a free USB port on your computer. After a few seconds, you will see a
message in the Notification Area of your Task Bar telling you that New Hardware has been found.
This will then change to confirm that the USB Converter is being installed, and will confirm when
the installation is complete.

Configuring the USB Converter in DesignaKnit

Magnetic Switch Links

If the Converter is attached to one of the Magnetic Switch Links, DesignaKnit can find and
configure the port number for you.

The following Serial CableLinks are classed as Magnetic Switch Links:

BrotherLink 2

BrotherLink 4

BrotherLink 5

E6000Link 1 (This is classed as a Magnetic Switch Link even though it has no capacity for
Interactive Knitting and is not supplied with either a magnetic box or a magnetic arm)
E6000Link 2

E8000Link

ScreenLink Serial

Make sure that your CableLink is connected to the computer.

Depending on the machine or device you are using with the link, use one of the following options to
get to the machine setup:

In Stitch Designer, click on:

 Options/Method of Knitting, select the machine and then click on the Setup button

or
 Transfer/Download or Transfer/Upload, select the machine or device and then click on the

Non-Magnetic Switch Links

The following Serial CableLinks are not Magnetic Switch Links

BrotherLink 1

BrotherLink 1 with PPD Adapter

BrotherLink 3

BrotherLink 3 with KH940/950i Adapter

E6000Link 1

SilverLink 3

For these CableLinks you will need to enter the COM port number manually.

Follow the instructions below to find the COM port number, then return to DesignaKnit and open
Stitch Designer.

In Stitch Designer, click on:

 Options/Method of Knitting , select the machine and then click on the Setup button

or
 Transfer/Download or Transfer/Upload, select the machine or device and then click on the
Setup button

In the Setup dialogue, if there is more than one possible CableLink for the machine, you can use
the drop-down list to select the serial CableLink. Enter the port number in the field, either by
typing in the number or use the arrow buttons to change the value up or down.

If there is only one kind of CableLink available, there will not be a list as DesignaKnit will assume
you have the correct one.

In this example the BrotherLink 3 (or BrotherLink 1 with PPD adapter) is assumed to download
to the PPD. However, DesignaKnit cannot tell whether this is the Serial BrotherLink 3, the Serial
BL3 with USB Converter or the USB BrotherLink 3 or BL3 Plus. If it is one of the latter two,
clicking on the Find Link button will locate the COM Port number, but it will not be able to find
either the Serial BL3, with or without the USB Converter. If you are connected via the USB
Converter, the COM Port number will have to be located via Device Manager and the number
entered manually.

Troubleshooting
If, after installing the USB-to-Serial Converter driver you try to use your CableLink and Designer tells
you that it cannot be found or, for some other reason it does not work, the first thing to check is that the
COM Port configured in Device Manager is the same as the one set in DesignaKnit's knitting machine
setup. Follow the instruction in the section headed Finding the COM Port number to check this. If these
settings don't match, change DesignaKnit's configuration to the same setting as Device Manager's.

If that doesn't fix the problem, check the following points:

 Is the Converter connected to the Computer?

 Is the CableLink attached to the Converter and to the Knitting Machine?

If the answer is yes to both of these, then check to see if Windows is recognizing the device.

 Follow the instructions for finding the COM Port Number to open Device Manager
 Is the USB-to-Serial Converter listed in the Ports (COM & LPT) section?

Corrupt or incomplete drivers

If the Converter is not listed in Device Manager, are there any other devices listed in that section
or in the one called Other Devices that are marked with an icon showing either a question or an
exclamation mark? Does the name include "Serial Port", "USB" or "Unknown Device"? If so, this
probably indicates either a corrupted driver or an incomplete installation.

Changing the COM Port number

1. Open Device Manager. To do this, follow the instructions given for finding the COM Port
Number.
2. Locate Prolific USB-to-Serial Converter in the Ports (COM and LPT) list and double-click on
it to open the Properties dialogue (or select Actions/Properties from the menu bar)

6. When you have selected a new port number, click on OK and OK again to close all open
dialogues, and close Device Manger.
7. Return to DesignaKnit, open Stitch Designer and set the port number for your device to
match the new one you have chosen, following the instructions appropriate for configuring
your CableLink.

Updating the Drivers

If you are connected to the Internet

If the drivers you installed are more than a few months old, it may be advisable to check to see
whether there have been any updates.
Open Device manager following the instructions to find the COM Port number.

Double click on Prolific USB-to-Serial Converter to open the Properties dialogue. Click on the
Driver tab and then click on the Update Driver button.

BrotherLinks
These CableLinks are designed to work with Brother (KnitKing) electronic knitting machines and/or
PPD. There is also a ScreenLink which does not download patterns, but can be used for Interactive
Knitting with punch card or other non-electronic machines.

The BrotherLinks fall into these categories:

Magnetic Switch Links

These are so called because the feedback to the computer for Interactive Knitting is via a magnetic
switch fixed to the console of the knitting machine and activated by a magnetic arm fixed to the knitting
machine's carriage. This arrangement also means that you can get DesignaKnit to find the link and
configure the program for you. It is worth noting that even if the CableLink is not being used with the
magnets, it is still classed as a Magnetic Switch Link.
The Brother Magnetic Switch Links are:

BrotherLink 1 USB

BrotherLink 1 USB + PPD Adapter

BrotherLink 2 Serial

BrotherLink 3 USB / BrotherLink 3 USB Plus

BrotherLink 3 USB / BrotherLink 3 USB Plus + KH940/950i Adapter

BrotherLink 4 Serial (Cartridge-Free)

BrotherLink 5 USB MultiCable

ScreenLink Serial and ScreenLink USB

These cables require the driver files to be installed before they can be used. Full instructions are
given in the section headed Magnetic Switch Cables.

Serial Connector Cables, with or without a USB Converter

Those cables which are Magnetic Switch Links are marked with an asterisk (*). DesignaKnit can locate
these cables automatically, but other Serial or Serial + Converter connections have to be configured
manually.

The BrotherLink Serial Cables are:

BrotherLink 1 Serial

BrotherLink 2 Serial *

BrotherLink 3 Serial

BrotherLink 4 Serial Cartridge-free Cable *

BrotherLink 5 Serial *

ScreenLink Serial *

Connecting a Serial CableLink to a physical serial port

The CableLink should be connected to the computer first, preferably while the computer is
switched off. Unlike USB ports, Serial connections are not 'plug and play' and you may damage the
port if you plug or unplug the connector while the computer is switched on.

Page 20
DesignaKnit 8 Machine CableLinks

There is no need to connect the CableLink to the knitting machine at this stage, but if it is already
connected, make sure that the knitting machine is switched off.

The end of the cable that connects to the computer has a serial port connection. If you have more
than one serial port, you can use whichever is free, but you must tell DesignaKnit which one you
are using. Most computers have two, referred to as ports 1 and 2. There is no sure way of working
out which the computer thinks is 1 and which is 2 unless they are labelled COM 1 and COM 2.
Serial ports can be 9 pin or 25 pin, and on standard computers they are always male. If the port
that you want to use has a different number of pins from the connector on your cable, use an
adapter. A serial mouse adapter will be fine.

Note that the serial port you choose should not have any other device associated with it.

When you have connected the CableLink, power up the computer and open DesignaKnit.

Setting up the Serial Cables in DesignaKnit

It is better to configure these CableLinks through Stitch Designer as the Interactive Knitting
section does not list the PPD options.

 For those connected to a knitting machine, click on Options/Method of Knitting , select your
knitting machine and then click on the Setup button.
 To set up a link for downloading to the PPD, click on Transfer/Download, select the
appropriate PPD mode and then click on the Setup button.

In the next dialogue, use the drop-down list to select the appropriate cable link:

If the cable is a Magnetic Switch Link , you can click on the Find Link button to establish the serial port
number.

If the cable is not a Magnetic Switch Link , then you must enter the Serial Port number manually

If it is connected directly to the Serial Port (i.e. not with a USB converter) then it will most likely be on
COM 1 or COM 2. Note that if, before you have configured the port number, DesignaKnit displays COM
2, this is not because the cable has been detected, but because that is the default setting. You can check
which port is available using Windows Device Manager.

If the CableLink has a Serial Connection with USB Converter, follow the instructions in the USB
Converter section to establish the COM Port number allocated to the cable.

To install the drivers and configure this option, please see the USB Converter section.

BrotherLink 1, BrotherLink 1 USB, BrotherLink 3 + PPD Adapter

These cables allow patterns to be downloaded from the computer into the following Brother/KnitKing
knitting machines and PPD cartridges.

The link can also be used to upload 900-series patterns (i.e. not the built-in ones) from the machine into
DesignaKnit. This means that patterns loaded from another source into the machine (such as from the
PPD or Brother FB100 Disk Drive) can be transferred via the cable into DesignaKnit.

About the BL1 USB / BrotherLink 3 USB + PPD Adapter

This is the latest version of the BrotherLink 1 and differs only from the BrotherLink 5 Multi-cable in
that it is not supplied with a magnetic arm. Should you wish to upgrade to the BrotherLink 5 USB
Multi-cable, you can do so by purchasing the magnetic arm.

The way in which the KH940 and KH950 machine interacts with DesignaKnit is different from the later
Brother/KnitKing machines. During Interactive Knitting, these machines send a signal back to the
computer to update the Interactive Knitting screen as long as the KC Knob is engaged at position I or II,

Page 21
DesignaKnit 8 Machine CableLinks

without the need for a magnet on the console. The slight disadvantage to this method is that if you are
following Interactive Knitting instructions for plain knitting which requires no programmed needle
selection, you must download an empty pattern and use the KC knob to link the carriage to the drive belt
so that the Interactive Knitting screen is kept synchronized with the knitting. The magnetic option,
however, allows you to work plain knitting or manual patterns without having to program a pattern into
the console, so the machine itself does not have to be switched on either. If you are knitting a
programmed pattern, you do, of course have to engage the KC knob, so you would not then need the
magnet.

The other possible advantage of having or upgrading to the BrotherLink 5 Multi-cable is that it can be
used for both downloading directly to, and Interactive Knitting with, the KH965i and KH970 and can
provide Interactive Knitting for the KH930 as well as for punch card and other non-electronic machines.

If you also have a PPD, you can use the PPD adapter to convert the BL1 USB or BL5 USB to a BL3 - and
this in turn means that your PPD cartridge can be used to program the KH965, KH965i and KH970 and,
assuming you have the carriage magnet, you can use it for Interactive Knitting on all these machines.

Connecting the BrotherLink 1 to the Knitting Machine

The CableLink's small connector with 8 pin-holes connects to the port on the knitting machine's
console (or, for the relevant PPD cartridges, to the PPD port).

The locating notch must face upwards, except when connecting to the KH965i, when it must face
downwards and the KH970, when it should face towards the CB-1.

Take care not to bend the pins on the knitting machine and not to push too hard when inserting
the cable.

NB The connector on the Brother KH950i is situated in an awkward position where the inserted
cable may be snagged by the carriage. You must be careful not to allow this to happen, as it could
cause damage to the machine. Bending the cable will help, and you can do this as follows:

Disconnect the cable and, using your fingers, make the cable bend sharply upwards immediately
next to the connector which goes into the KH950i. Hold the cable in a sharply bent position for a
few seconds until it has a permanent right angle kink. This must NOT be done while the cable is
connected to the KH950i or you could damage the machine. Attach the BrotherLink cable with
some tape to the back of the machine a few inches from the connector, taking care that there is
sufficient slack to prevent stress being put on the knitting machine socket when the cable is
inserted.

Be careful not to leave the cable plugged into the knitting machine if it is at risk of being caught
by the carriage or creates a trip hazard because such an event could damage your equipment.

BrotherLink 2
This CableLink has been discontinued and has been superseded, first by the BrotherLink 4 Serial, and
now by the BrotherLink 5 Serial or BrotherLink 5 USB.

If you already own one of these CableLinks, it will still work, but you may need to adjust the height at
which the KnitLink box is set if you are intending to use it with a KH970. This is a Magnetic Switch
Link, which DesignaKnit can detect and which can be attached either directly to a Serial Port or, using
the USB Converter, to a USB port .

Connecting the BrotherLink 2 to the Knitting Machine

This CableLink has a small black box with a red spot on it which must be positioned on the
machine's console using the fastening fabric supplied with the link. This is the KnitLink box; it
detects the movement of the carriage, keeping the Interactive Knitting screen synchronized with
the carriage. In order for this to work, the magnetic Knit Link arm must be attached to the
Knitleader tripper on the carriage.

1. Slide the magnetic KnitLink arm onto the Knitleader tripper on the left hand side of the
carriage. The rubber tube that holds the magnet at one end may have a hole punched
through the other end of the tube. If so, the Knitleader tripper should push through that
hole and the tripper would stay in the up position. Otherwise, if there is no hole, the empty
end of the tube is pushed onto the tripper arm and the tripper is moved down into the
working position. The USB cables have a metal magnetic arm that attaches directly to the
carriage and can be adjusted so that the magnet arm is lined up with the KnitLink box.
2. Press the KnitLink box down firmly to make sure it stays in place. Make sure that the
magnetic KnitLink arm does not catch on anything as the carriage is moved.
3. Before starting to knit, make sure that the magnetic KnitLink arm is pushed onto the
Knitleader tripper, the tripper is down in the working position, and that the magnetic end
of the arm passes within a few millimetres of the red spot on the KnitLink box. Aim for a
clearance of 2 or 3 mm. If necessary, reposition the KnitLink box using the fastening fabric.
4. You may find it necessary to disconnect the DesignaKnit lead from the connector on the
machine console in order for DesignaKnit to be able to detect carriage movement during
Interactive Knitting.

can be used to transfer the patterns to and from the machine's memory.

You can upgrade your BL3 USB to a BL3 USB Plus by purchasing the upgrade kit which consists of the
KnitLink Box and Magnetic Arm. If you also have the PPD adapter, this effectively gives you a

downwards and the KH970, when it should face towards the CB-1.

Take care not to bend the pins on the PPD or knitting machine and not to push too hard when
inserting the cable.

Setting up the BL3 in DesignaKnit

The setup options you take will depend on whether you are using the BrotherLink 3 to
communicate with a PPD for up or downloading or if, with the optional extras you will be using
the BL3 Plus for Interactive Knitting.

TIP
If you are using the PPD Adapter to convert your cable to a BrotherLink 1, you should treat the
cable as a BL1 and follow the instructions for setting up, up and downloading and Interactive
Knitting for that CableLink.

Downloading and Uploading

If you are communicating with the BL3 in PPD mode - that is, without the PPD Adapter - the
download and upload dialogues will not offer you a list of CableLinks as it will be assumed that
you have a BL3. What DesignaKnit will not know is whether this is a BL3 Serial, a BL3 Serial +
USB Converter, a BL3 USB or a BL3 USB Plus.

1. Click on the appropriate option in the Transfer menu.

2. Select the PPD mode you want and click on the Setup button.
3. If you have either the BL3 Serial or BL3 Serial + USB Converter, DesignaKnit cannot find
the Serial Port number for you, so you must have entered this manually, following the
instructions for setting up either a direct Serial Port connection or those for setting up a
Virtual Serial Port with the USB Converter.
4. If you have either the BL3 USB or the BL3 USB Plus, then you can click on the Find Link
button

BrotherLink 4 Serial (Cartridge-free) CableLink

This CableLink is not to be confused with the BrotherLink 4 USB, which is an entirely different
CableLink and not just a USB version of this one. This CableLink is a Magnetic Switch Link.

The BrotherLink 4 Serial is no longer available new, but if you have one it will work with DesignaKnit 8,
either connected directly to a Serial Port or, with the USB Converter, connected to a USB port.

Connecting the BrotherLink 4 Serial to the knitting machine

The large black box has 3 cables connected to it.

Ribbon Cable: the wide, flat, ribbon cable ends in a connector which fixes into the cartridge slot on
the knitting machine in the same place as the cartridge.

KnitLink Box Cable: the second cable ends in a small black box with a red spot on it. This box is
called the KnitLink box; it detects the movement of the carriage and keeps the screen
synchronized with the carriage during interactive knitting. In order for this to work, the magnetic
KnitLink arm must be attached to the Knitleader tripper on the carriage.

Serial Cable: The third cable is the longest and connects either directly to a Serial Port on the
computer or to the Serial connector on the USB Converter which in turn is connected to a USB
port on the computer.

Connecting the Ribbon Cable

Turn the knitting machine power off. Place the large box on its edge, resting on the table next to
the knitting machine cartridge slot. The ribbon cable should come out of the top edge of the box
with the red striped edge to your left as you face the machine. Gently push the connector which is
at the end of the ribbon cable into the cartridge slot of the knitting machine. Be sure not to push
the knitting machine power switch accidentally while connecting the ribbon cable, as this could
cause damage to the machine and cable.

This connector must be in place when you want to transfer patterns between the computer and
the knitting machine.

It is best to leave the connector in the slot at all times, and avoid unnecessary plugging and
unplugging. However, should you experience difficulty with interactive knitting it is advisable to
remove the ribbon cable connector carefully from the cartridge slot before trying again.

It is essential that the ribbon cable connector is fully inserted and is not crooked otherwise the
knitting machine and cable could be damaged. Soft Byte and its agents can accept no
responsibility for any damage done.

Connecting the KnitLink Cable

1. Push the magnetic KnitLink arm onto the Knitleader tripper on the left side of the carriage.
Move the tripper down into the working position.
2. Take the KnitLink box with both layers of the fastening fabric still attached to its
underside. Place it on the console of your knitting machine - directly to the right of the
toolbox cover is probably the best place. Direct the red spot towards you and the cable away
from you.
3. Move the carriage to approximately the centre of the needle bed and make sure that the
KnitLink arm lines up with the red spot on the box and passes as closely as possible without
actually touching.
4. When it is positioned correctly, remove the backing strip of the fastening fabric, and fix to
the console
5. Press the KnitLink box down firmly to make sure it stays in place.
6. Make sure that the magnetic KnitLink arm does not catch on the ribbon cable. Make sure
the ribbon cable is bent out of the way.

Detaching the KnitLink box

To pack your knitting machine in its case, remove the connector from the cartridge slot, and
simply pull the KnitLink box upwards so that the two layers of fabric fastener are separated

BrotherLink 4 USB and BrotherLink 4 USB Plus (Cartridge)

This CableLink cannot be used to download patterns directly from DesignaKnit. Instead, it serves as a
substitute cartridge for the PPD.

In order to download DesignaKnit patterns to the BrotherLink 4 USB Cartridge, you will also need a
PPD and a BrotherLink 3. The cartridge end is inserted into the cartridge slot of the PPD instead of the
normal PPD cartridge and patterns are then up or downloaded. Note that the CableLink can only
download to machines which have a cartridge slot and it is not, therefore, compatible with the KH940 or
KH950i.

Patterns are then transferred to the knitting machine by inserting the cartridge into slot on the knitting
machine.

If you have the BrotherLink 4 Plus version, this includes a magnetic arm and a detector which then
allows Interactive Knitting on any machine. You can convert your BL4 USB to a BL4 USB Plus by
purchasing the upgrade kit which consists of a KnitLink box and Magnetic Arm.

Please use the CD supplied with the CableLink to install the drivers before connecting it either to
the computer or the knitting machine.

Attach the magnet and box to the machine's carriage and console according to the instructions
included in your Plus upgrade.

Please note the following important points, as not following the guidance could result in damage to
your knitting machine or PPD. Soft Byte Ltd and its agents cannot be held responsible for any
damage to your knitting equipment caused by not following these instructions:

 Never plug the Cartridge into a knitting machine or PPD while the power to the machine or
PPD is switched on.
 Never unplug the Cartridge from the knitting machine or PPD while the power to the
machine or PPD is switched on.

Failure to abide by the following advice is unlikely to cause damage to your equipment, but could
cause temporary technical problems which could require a restart of the computer to resolve them.

 The CableLink should not be connected to the computer while it is inserted into a knitting
machine or PPD, even if the knitting machine or PPD is powered off.
 Remove the USB cable from the Cartridge before inserting the Cartridge into the knitting
machine or PPD.

PPD Adapter
The BrotherLink 5 can down and upload patterns directly to the knitting machines and PPD modes
listed below. It also comes with a KnitLink Box and Magnetic Arm. The Magnetic Arm is attached to the
knitting carriage and the KnitLink Box to the machine's console. When the arm passes the box, the
movement is detected and a signal sent back to the computer which updates the Interactive Knitting
screen so that the instructions given there are synchronized with the actual knitting.

However, you should note that the actual needle selection is controlled by the pattern which has been
downloaded into the machine. This means that a) you must program the machine to knit the chosen
pattern and b) should you need to unravel or restart the knitting you must adjust the pattern position in
both Interactive Knitting and via the machine's console in order to maintain synchronicity.

Connecting the BrotherLink 5 to the Knitting Machine

Your Brother Link 5 will either have a Serial lead and connector or, for the BL5 USB MultiCable,
a USB lead to connect to the computer.

The main lead which connects to the computer will have either a Serial or USB connecter. The
other end of this lead goes into the KnitLink box, and from this, a second lead has the connector
for the knitting machine or PPD port.

1.. Machine connection: This is used for downloading and uploading patterns to the machine's or
PPD's memory. You may find that you need to disconnect this from the knitting machine when
engaged in Interactive Knitting.

Take care not to bend the pins on the knitting machine and not to push too hard when inserting
the cable.

Page 31
DesignaKnit 8 Machine CableLinks

NB
The connector on the Brother KH950i is situated in an awkward position where the inserted
cable may be snagged by the carriage.

2.. KnitLink Box: the KnitLink box which must be attached to the machine's console.

Fitting the KnitLink Box and Magnetic Arm

Depending on which type of magnetic arm was supplied with your BrotherLink 5, attach it as
follows:

BrotherLink 5 Serial or ScreenLink Serial

Slide the magnetic KnitLink arm onto the Knitleader tripper on the left hand side of the carriage. The
rubber tube that holds the magnet at one end may have a hole punched through the other end of the
tube. If so, the Knitleader tripper should push through that hole and the tripper would stay in the up
position. Otherwise, if there is no hole, the empty end of the tube is pushed onto the tripper arm and the
tripper is moved down into the working position.

BrotherLink 5 USB MultiCable or ScreenLink USB

This CableLink is supplied with a metal magnetic arm which attaches to the main part of the carriage
using Velcro which allows you to position and height of the arm so that it is correctly lined up with the
KnitLink box on the machine's console.

1. Move the carriage to the middle of the needle bed.

2. Place the oblong base of the KnitLink Cable arm with both layers of the fastening fabric
still attached to its underside onto the carriage.
3. Place the KnitLink Cable box with both layers of the fastening fabric still attached to its
underside onto the console of your knitting machine. Direct the red spot towards you and
the cable pointing away.
4. Make sure that the magnet in the end of the KnitLink Cable arm lines up with the red spot
on the box and passes as closely as possible without actually touching when the carriage is
moved.

5. When positioned correctly, remove the backing strip of the fastening fabric from the base of
the KnitLink Cable arm and fix to the carriage. Remove the backing strip of the fastening
fabric from the base of the KnitLink Cable box and fix to the console.
6. Make fine adjustments to the positioning of the arm and box by altering the position in
which their fabric fasteners engage. Aim for a clearance of two or three millimetres. It
might be necessary to bend the KnitLink Cable arm to get the positioning right. The middle
section of the KnitLink Cable arm is flexible, although to bend it will need a little force.
7. Press the arm base and box down firmly to make sure they stay in place.
8. Make sure that the KnitLink Cable arm does not catch on anything in its path when the
carriage is moved, including charting devices.
9. You can buy extra pieces of ordinary fastening fabric and attach them to other knitting
machines, and move the KnitLink Cable arm and box to whichever machine you need to
work with.
10. To pack your knitting machine in its case, simply pull the KnitLink Cable box upwards so
that the two layers of fabric fastener are separated. You might also need to detach the
KnitLink Cable arm from the carriage in the same way.

Aligning the Magnetic Arm to the KnitLink Box

Position the carriage in the centre of the needle bed so the magnet is slightly to the left of the
tension mast. Line up the KnitLink box on the left side of the tension mast and to the back of the
needle bed, in a position where the magnet will pass directly in front of the red spot with the very
minimum gap (approximately 2 - 3 mm) between the spot and the magnet, yet not quite touching.
Remove the backing paper from the Velcro strip on the bottom (narrow edge) of the KnitLink box
and press it firmly into position. The red spot should be at the top and facing to the front of the
needle bed and the two cables extend from the KnitLink box at the back. Users with the longer
KnitLink arm which is attached to the carriage with Velcro should have the red spot at the bottom
of the KnitLink box.

Pfaff/Passap CableLinks
These CableLinks are designed to work with Pfaff/Passap E6000 or E8000 knitting machines only. Only
use the CableLink which has been designed for your make and model of knitting machine. Do not
connect your DesignaKnit cable to anything other than the appropriate Pfaff/Passap knitting machine
console and a computer.

You should only ever connect or disconnect the cable when the knitting machine and the computer are
powered off, otherwise you could cause damage. Soft Byte Ltd and its agents can accept no responsibility
for damage caused.

Instructions on downloading are to be found in the Stitch Designer Help, and for Interactive Knitting, in
the Help in that section of the Program.

Pfaff/Passap Serial or Serial + USB Converter CableLinks

If you are intending to connect via a USB port on your computer, you may well find that these links are
not only economical just for one machine, but if you have other knitting machines, a single USB
Converter can be used to convert any of the Serial CableLinks to a USB version.

In addition, the E6000Link 2 and the E8000Link have a switch to change the mode from download to
Interactive Knitting which means that you do not have to disconnect from the pattern console when you
want to knit.

Pfaff/Passap E6000Link 1

This is the simpler CableLink: it enables downloading but not Interactive Knitting. The
E6000Link 1 is appropriate when the computer is not in the same room as the knitting machine.

The circular male DIN plug connects to the E6000 console in the same place as the cable which
normally leads to the locks. Unplug the cable leading to the locks, and plug in the round DIN plug
instead. The DesignaKnit lead must be in place when you want to download patterns from the
computer to the E6000 console.

Pfaff/Passap E6000Link 2 and Pfaff/Passap E8000Link

These CableLinks enable both downloading to the console and Interactive Knitting and you can
change from one mode to the other using the switch rather than having to plug and unplug the
download section of the cable.

The CableLink consists of the following parts:

 A box having 4 leads coming out of it and a switch. This is attached with fastening fabric to
the centre of the top of the E6000 or E8000 console, with the switch facing you and the 4
leads pointing away from you.

The switch changes the link from downloading mode to knitting mode.

o For downloading the switch must be towards the left (away from the red spot)
o For knitting it should be towards the red spot on the right
 A lead ending in a round male DIN plug. This plugs into the socket in the E6000 console
where the cable leading to the locks normally connects. Unplug the cable leading to the
locks and plug in the round DIN plug instead.
 A lead ending in a round female DIN socket. The cable which normally connects to the
console, and which leads to the locks, plugs into this.

 The longest lead which ends in a 9 (or for older versions sometimes a 25 pin) serial port
connector. This connects either directly to a serial port on the computer or, using the USB
Converter, to a USB port.
 A lead ending in a small black box with a red spot on it. This is the KnitLink Box which
detects the movement of the locks and keeps the screen synchronized with them while
knitting interactively. In order for this to work, the Magnetic Arm must be attached to the
back lock. See below for instructions on how to fit these two elements to your machine.

Pfaff/Passap E6000Link 1 USB and E6000Link 2 USB

These CableLinks can be connected directly to a USB port on your computer, without the need for a
converter.

The E6000Link 1 USB

This is the simpler CableLink: it enables downloading but not Interactive Knitting. The
E6000Link 1 is appropriate when the computer is not in the same room as the knitting machine.

The circular male DIN plug connects to the E6000 console in the same place as the cable which
normally leads to the locks. Unplug the cable leading to the locks, and plug in the round DIN plug
instead. The DesignaKnit lead must be in place when you want to download patterns from the
computer to the E6000 console.

If you have other knitting machines, you should consider using the serial version of this and other
CableLinks with a single USB Converter which can be used to convert whichever one is in use to a
USB Link.

The E6000Link 2 USB

This can be used for Interactive Knitting as well as downloading but, unlike the Serial version of
this CableLink, it does not have a switch to change modes so the download cable must be
disconnected before attempting to knit interactively.

If you have other knitting machines, you should consider using the serial version of this and other
CableLinks with a single USB Converter which can be used to convert whichever one is in use to a
USB Link.

The CableLink consists of the following parts:

 A box having 4 leads coming out of it and a switch. This is attached with fastening fabric to
the centre of the top of the E6000 or E8000 console, with the switch facing you and the 4
leads pointing away from you.

The switch changes the link from downloading mode to knitting mode.

o For downloading the switch must be towards the left (away from the red spot)
o For knitting it should be towards the red spot on the right

where the cable leading to the locks normally connects.
Converter, to a USB port.

back lock. See below for instructions on how to fit these two elements to your machine.

Fitting the KnitLink Box and Magnetic Arm

NB
Although it is true that magnets can interfere with electronic knitting machines, please note
that, positioned correctly, the magnetic KnitLink arm does not cause any problems

1. Move the locks so that the left edge of the back lock is slightly to the left of the left hand yarn
mast. Move both masts to the rear position
2. Find the magnetic KnitLink arm. This has fabric fastener attached to the underside of its base.
Remove the backing strip and position it (pressing only lightly) at the back left corner of the back
lock as shown. The arm should be sticking out horizontally, pointing backwards. An alternative for
the KnitLink arm for knitters who have the electric motor and triangular countdown tripper, is to
position it so that the magnet rests on the bottom horizontal bar of the countdown tripper. This
will ensure that it does not begin to drop out of alignment with the red spot
3. Take the KnitLink box with both layers of the fastening fabric still attached. Remove the backing
strip and hold it with the red spot towards you and the cable pointing away. Move it to the left side
of the left yarn mast, at such a height that the end of the KnitLink arm passes opposite and close
to the red spot on the KnitLink box. Press against the mast to stick it lightly
4. Ensure that the end of the KnitLink arm passes directly opposite the red spot and close to it.
When you are satisfied that the positioning is more or less correct, press the both the KnitLink
arm and box firmly to stick them securely in place
5. The fabric fastener allows the arm to be attached and detached easily and its exact position
adjusted as required. Look from the side to make sure that when the locks move, the KnitLink
arm passes close to the red spot on the box without actually touching it. Aim for a clearance of
about 2 to 3 mm

Connecting the Pfaff/Passap CableLinks to the Computer

Direct Serial Connection

The end of the cable that connects to the computer has a serial port connector. If you have more
than one serial port, you can use whichever is free, but you must tell DesignaKnit which one you
are using. Most older computers have two, referred to as ports 1 and 2. There is no sure way of
working out which the computer thinks is 1 and which is 2 unless they are labelled COM 1 and
COM 2. Serial ports can be 9 pin or 25 pin, and on standard computers they are always male. If
the port that you want to use has a different number of pins from the connector on your cable, use
an adapter. A serial mouse adapter will be fine.

Serial Connection Using the USB Converter

As modern computers, particularly laptops tend not to have serial ports, you can use any of the
Serial Pfaff/Passap CableLinks with a USB Converter, which can of course be used with any other
serial links you have for other machines. Follow the instructions in the USB Converter section to
install the drivers and set up a Virtual Serial Port - if you are not connected to the Internet, do not
connect to a USB port until instructed to do so.

Direct USB Connection

Follow the instructions to install the drivers for Magnetic Switch Links (this also applies to the
E6000Link 1, even though it is not supplied with a KnitLink Box). If you are not connected to the
Internet, do not attach the cable to a USB port until instructed to do so.

Configuring the Pfaff/Passap CableLinks in DesignaKnit

All versions of these CableLinks are treated as Magnetic Switch Links, including the E6000Link 1,
which is not supplied with the KnitLink Box for Interactive Knitting. This means that DesignaKnit can
detect the COM port number automatically. You can access the Machine Setup via Stitch Designer. Click
on Options/Method of Knitting or Transfer/Download to select one of the E6000 or E8000 options and
then on the Setup button to access the configuration dialogue. Next, click on the Find Link button and,
finally, on the Start Search button. DesignaKnit will then locate the CableLink and set the Port number
accordingly.

You can also configure the port number in Interactive Knitting, via Options/Knitting Machine/Setup .

Punch Card, Non-Electronic and Other Machines

DesignaKnit cannot, for obvious reasons, program a non-electronic machine directly, but it can produce
templates for most domestic punch card machines and charts or other types of instruction to indicate
manual needle set up for all sorts of other machines which cannot be connected to DesignaKnit.

You can, however, for most of these machines, use a Magnetic Switch Link to synchronize the passes of
the carriage or locks with DesignaKnit's Interactive Knitting section so that you can receive real-time
instructions for colour changing, technique settings, shaping or other manual interventions which have
been programmed into a stitch pattern or shape file.

The ScreenLink is a Magnetic Switch Link which consists of a KnitLink Box and Magnetic Arm which
are attached respectively to the console and carriage of the knitting machine. The Box is then connected
to the computer via a lead which has either a serial port connecter or a USB connector.

If you have other knitting machines, you may well find that the ScreenLink Serial used with the USB
Converter represents the best value as the USB Converter can be used with other types of Serial Cable
Links. Note also other CableLinks for downloading which also incorporate the KnitLink Box and
Magnetic Arm may also be suitable for use as a ScreenLink on non-electronic machines, in particular the
BrotherLink 5 USB MultiCable, the BrotherLink 3 USB Plus and the SilverLink 3 USB Plus.

Setting up the KnitLink Box and Magnetic Arm

1. Move the carriage to the middle of the bed.
2. Place the oblong base of the Magnetic Arm, with both layers of the fastening fabric still attached to
its underside, onto the carriage
3. Facing the needle bed, place the KnitLink Box, with both layers of the fastening fabric still
attached to its underside, onto the console of your knitting machine. The red spot should be
pointing towards you and the cable leads pointing away, towards the back of the knitting machine.
4. Make sure that the Magnetic Arm lines up with the red spot on the KnitLink Box and passes as
closely as possible without actually touching when the carriage is moved.

5. When positioned correctly, remove the backing strip of the fastening fabric from the base of the
Magnetic Arm and fix it to the carriage. Remove the backing strip of the fastening fabric from the
base of the KnitLink Box and fix it to the console.
6. Make any fine adjustments to the positioning of the Arm and Box by altering the position in which
they sit on their fabric fastening. Aim for a clearance of between the Magnetic Arm and KnitLink
Box of no more than 2 to 3 mm. It might be necessary to bend the Magnetic Arm slightly to get the
positioning right. The middle section of the Magnetic Arm is designed to be flexible, although to
bend it will need a little force as you will want it to stay in its new position.
7. Press the arm base and box down firmly onto the fastening fabric to make sure they stay in place.
8. Make sure that the Magnetic Arm cannot catch or snag on anything in its path when the carriage
is moved, including charting devices or other machine attachments.
9. You can buy extra pieces of ordinary fastening fabric and attach them to other knitting machines,
and move the ScreenLink Magnetic Arm and KnitLink Box to whichever machine you are
currently using.
10. To remove the KnitLink Box and Magnetic Arm, either to another machine or so that you can pack
the machine away, simply pull them upwards so that the two layers of fastening fabric are
separated.

Connecting the ScreenLink to your computer

Depending on the type of ScreenLink you are using, you may need to install drivers first.

ScreenLink Serial

If you are connecting directly to the Serial Port on your computer, there are no drivers to be
installed. You should not connect or disconnect the ScreenLink while the computer is powered on.
While the computer is switched off, plug the serial connector into the port on your computer. You
will need to configure the port number in DesignaKnit.

ScreenLink Serial + USB Converter

If you are using the USB Converter, you need to install the drivers and set up the Virtual Serial
Port. Follow the instructions in the USB Converter section.

ScreenLink USB

If your ScreenLink has a USB connector, then to install the drivers you should follow the
instructions in the Magnetic Switch Link section.

After a few seconds or minutes, depending on the speed of your Internet connection, a
message such as “Installing device driver software” should be shown, and some time later
a new message should appear to say that the device driver software installed successfully.
It may also tell you which port number was allocated, for example USB Serial Port (COM

3. If Windows does not react when the SilverLink is connected for the first time, it could
mean that another USB device containing a similar chipset has previously been installed
on the computer. In this case, Windows might not search or request a driver for the
SilverLink 5 but may just continue to use the driver that is already installed, which may
be too old to work well with your current version of Windows. If Windows does not react
when the SilverLink is connected for the first time, please go to the Troubleshooting
section Updating the driver from the Internet. If your knitting computer is not connected
to the Internet, see the notes at the end of that section.

6. After a few moments the program should confirm that the SilverLink 5 has been detected
and the serial port number will be displayed. Even though the SilverLink uses a USB
connection, DesignaKnit will detect and report the virtual serial port number that Windows
has assigned to the SilverLink. If it reports that the link was not found, go to the section
titled Troubleshooting.
7. Click on OK, then click OK in the Setup dialogue, and again on the Knitting Machine
Selection dialogue.
8. If the link was detected, DesignaKnit will now automatically copy the SilverLink 5 port
number setting to all Silver Reed electronic machines on the list in the Knitting Machine
Selection dialogue so it is not necessary to repeat this process for any other Silver Reed
electronic machines you have.

Troubleshooting
Updating the driver from the Internet

Using an old driver can produce a variety of problems.

If your DesignaKnit PC is connected to the Internet this can be done as follows (otherwise go to
the end of this section).

1. From My Computer select Control Panel (under Windows XP, Vista, and Windows 7 it can
also be necessary to select Performance and Maintenance or System and Security) then
System.
2. Under Windows XP, Vista, and Windows 7, select Hardware at this point. Select Device
Manager. (If you have configured Classic View in Control Panel, select Device Manager
from the alphabetical list of items.)
3. In Windows XP, Vista, and Windows 7, select View / Devices by type. In other Windows
versions, make sure View devices by type is selected.
4. In the list of devices, double click on Ports (COM & LPT).

5. This will produce additional lines in the list of devices, one for each port that the computer
has. Each new line will be something like Communications Port (COM 4) or Printer port
( L P T 1) .
6. Find one called USB serial com port or similar. The COM number that the driver has
assigned is shown in brackets. The COM number is the same as a serial port number.
7. Right click on USB Serial com port and select Properties. Under the Driver tab, select
Update Driver. If the option to search the Internet (this time only) is offered, take it. The
search can take a few minutes.
1. If your DesignaKnit computer is not connected to the Internet, you can download the
current driver from another computer that is connected to the Internet by going to
www.softbyte.co.uk . Transfer the downloaded driver to removable media and transfer it to
the knitting PC. Use it in the way described under Installing the driver from CD (for media
other than CDs the same principles apply). Alternatively, if you have no Internet source,
install the driver from the CD. If your SilverLink CD and DesignaKnit CD are both some
years old, it is advisable to get an updated SilverLink CD from your DesignaKnit dealer.
Changing the Port Number
A variety of problems can result if another device driver is also trying to use the same virtual
serial port number. If you have checked the above points but there is still mispatterning or there
are other problems, try changing the port number of the USB serial port as follows.

(LPT 1).
6. Find one called USB serial com port or similar. The COM number that the driver has
assigned is shown in brackets. The COM number is the same as a serial port number.
7. Right click on USB Serial com port and select Properties / Settings or Port Settings /
Advanced.
8. At the top of the next dialogue box there is a drop-down list of possible com ports, with an
indication of whether each port number is already in use. Click OK, OK again, and close
down Device Manager.

Serial Port Connection

If you have opted for a serial port connection, you should first make sure that both the SilverLink
4 and your computer are powered off. Soft Byte Ltd and its agents can take no responsibility for
damage caused to your computer or knitting machine if you ignore this advice.

The male connector on the serial cable should be connected to the female port on the SilverLink
and the female end to a free serial port on your computer. If necessary, you should use the
provided adapter to connect the nine-pin cable to a twenty-five pin serial port.

If you have more than one serial port, you can use whichever is free, but you must tell
DesignaKnit which one you are using. Most computers have two, referred to as ports 1 and 2.
There is no sure way of working out which the computer thinks is 1 and which is 2 unless they

they are always male. If the port that you want to use has a different number of pins from the
connector on your cable, use an adapter. A serial mouse adapter will be fine.

NOTE: The serial port used for your SilverLink 4 must not have any other device driver configured
to use it, or the link will not operate correctly.

Please now read the instructions for setting up the SilverLink 4 in DesignaKnit.

6. After a few moments the program should confirm that the SilverLink 4 has been detected
and the serial port number will be displayed.
8. If the link was detected, DesignaKnit will now automatically copy the SilverLink 4 port
number setting to all Silver Reed electronic machines on the list in the Knitting Machine

1. From My Computer select Control Panel (under Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7 it can
also be necessary to select Performance and Maintenance or System and Security) then
System.

(LPT 1).

1. From My Computer select Control Panel (under Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7 it can
also be necessary to select Performance and Maintenance or System and Security) then
System.
(LPT 1).

Pattern Variation Switches

Please note that the Pattern Variation Switches on the EC1 or on the 550/560/580 machine
console will not work while a DesignaKnit SilverLink Cable is attached to the knitting
machine. Pattern variations should be set up in DesignaKnit's Stitch Designer before
starting to knit. You can read about how to do this in Stitch Designer Help.

SilverLink 3
There are three versions of this cable, which is for transferring patterns from DesignaKnit to the PE1
Pattern Controller, which must be powered by an EC1, not directly to a knitting machine, so is most
useful when the knitting machine cannot be connected directly to the computer, although the Plus
version does give you the option of following the on-screen instructions as you knit your pattern from the
PE1.

SilverLink 3 Serial and SilverLink 3 USB

Device: Silver Reed/Studio/Singer PE1 pattern controller
Connection: Serial (can be connected to USB port using the USB Converter)
USB
Power source: EC1 Card Reader unit which is then connected to the domestic electricity supply.
Downloading/ The pattern is downloaded to the PE1 from the Stitch Designer section of DesignaKnit.
Interactive Knitting: The PE1 is then connected to the knitting machine. These versions of the SilverLink 3 do
not connect to the Interactive Knitting section.
Uploading: Patterns stored in the PE1's memory can be uploaded to DesignaKnit.
Additional Silver Reed/Studio/Singer PE1 pattern controller and EC1.
requirements:
SilverLink 3 USB Plus
Device: Silver Reed/Studio/Singer PE1 pattern controller
Connection: USB
Power source: EC1 Card Reader unit which is then connected to the domestic electricity supply.
Downloading/ The pattern is downloaded to the PE1 from the Stitch Designer section of DesignaKnit. The
Interactive Knitting: PE1 is then connected to the knitting machine to transfer pattern for needle selection.
Using the supplied magnetic arm and box, you can follow the instructions in Interactive
Knitting.
Uploading: Patterns stored in the PE1's memory can be uploaded to DesignaKnit.
Additional Silver Reed/Studio/Singer PE1 pattern controller and EC1.
requirements:

The pattern is downloaded first to the PE1 and this in turn programs the knitting carriage via the
Curl Cord. As the carriage crosses the needle bed, the magnetic arm fixed to the carriage, in
passing the magnet box, sends a signal to the computer that a row has been knitted. This, in turn,
updates the Interactive Knitting screen so that the instructions for shaping and colour changing
are current. Unlike the direct links from the PC to the knitting machine, there is no control over
the needle selection from the computer, so you must make sure that the PE1 is correctly
synchronized with both the Row Counter on the knitting machine and with the Interactive
Knitting screen.

Connecting the Computer to the PE1

Serial Connection: The long lead attaches to the PC's serial port with the 9- or 25-pin connector.
USB Connection: The long lead attaches to a USB port on the computer.

Next, attach the short leads, taking care that when you insert the round connectors, the arrow is
uppermost.

USB Connection - Installing the Driver

You must be logged on as an Administrator in order to install the drivers.

[If your computer does not ask you for a user name and password when you start Windows, you
are almost certainly have Administrator permissions]

If you are currently connected to the Internet, click here to go straight to the section on how to
install the driver from the Internet, otherwise follow the instructions on how to install from the
CD.

Windows CE users only: please follow this link http://www.ftdichip.com/Drivers/VCP.htm to

download the correct driver (which is also suitable for the following DesignaKnit links: USB
SilverLink 2, SilverLink 4, USB BrotherLink 1, 3, 4, and 5, USB E6000 Link 1 and 2, and USB
ScreenLink)

Installing the Driver from the CD

Do not connect the SilverLink's USB cable to your computer yet: if the cable is already
connected, disconnect it.

1. Insert the DesignaKnit 8 CD into the drive: if the DesignaKnit setup program starts,
close this window as you do not need to install DesignaKnit again.
2. Open a My Computer window. Locate the CD or DVD drive and right click on it.
From the menu which appears, select Explore, Browse, or Open in a new window.
3. Run the program whose filename begins USBlinks_DriverInstaller . On most
Windows computers this can be done by double clicking the left mouse button on the
program name.
4. The driver will then be installed. Finally you may be presented with an instruction to
restart the computer - if so, do this before proceeding.
5. Locate the long USB lead. It may now be connected at any time - while the computer
is on, off, or is starting up. Connect the square end of the USB lead to the socket next
to the power inlet on the SilverLink 4, and insert the flatter rectangular end of the
USB cable into a standard USB port on your computer. This may be at the front or
back of your computer, or may be attached to a PCI card, or you may have a USB hub
to which more than one device is attached.
6. Now please go to the section Setting up the SilverLink 3 in DesignaKnit to complete
the process.

Installing the Driver from the Internet

1. Connect the square end of the USB lead to the socket next to the power inlet on the

USB port on your computer. This may be at the front or back of your computer, or
may be attached to a PCI card, or you may have a USB hub to which more than one
device is attached.
2. When Windows starts, or if the link is connected while Windows is running, it will
quickly recognize that the SilverLink has been attached and may show a message in
the notification area of your Task Bar saying that it is connecting to Windows Update
to find the driver. If that does not happen, go straight to item 3 .

After a few seconds or minutes, depending on the speed of your Internet connection,
a message such as “Installing device driver software” should be shown, and some time
later a new message should appear to say that the device driver software installed
successfully. It may also tell you which port number was allocated, for example USB
Serial Port (COM 7).

It might instead show a message to say that the best driver is already installed. If
the driver is already installed or appears to have just installed successfully please go
to the section titled “Setting up the SilverLink 4 in DesignaKnit”. Otherwise go to
Troubleshooting.

Alternatively Windows may invite you to install the appropriate driver (different
versions and configurations of Windows react differently). If that does not happen, go
straight to item 3 .
Take the option to search for a suitable driver for the device, and then take the option
to search the Internet (or Windows Update) for a driver. If the option is given to
search the Internet this time only, take it. After a few seconds or minutes, depending
on the speed of your Internet connection, a message such as “Installing device driver
software” should be shown, and some time later a new message should appear to say
that the device driver software has been installed successfully. It may also tell you
which port number was allocated, for example USB Serial Port (COM 5). It might
instead show a message to say that the best driver is already installed. If the driver is
already installed or appears to have installed successfully please go to the section
Setting up the SilverLink 3 in DesignaKnit. Otherwise go to Troubleshooting.

3. If Windows does not react when the SilverLink is connected for the first time, it could
mean that another USB device containing a similar chipset has previously been
installed on the computer. In this case, Windows might not search or request a driver
for the SilverLink 5 but may just continue to use the driver that is already installed,
which may be too old to work well with your current version of Windows. If Windows
does not react when the SilverLink is connected for the first time, please go to the
Troubleshooting section Updating the driver from the Internet. If your knitting
computer is not connected to the Internet, see the notes at the end of that section.

SilverLink 1
These links are no longer available new as they have been superseded, most recently by the SilverLink 5
which, because it downloads first to the SilverLink Box and thence to the carriage rather than a row at a
time directly to the carriage, is not subject to interruptions from Windows processes as SilverLinks 1 and

If you have been using a SilverLink 1 and have upgraded to DesignaKnit 8 on the same computer as your
earlier version, you do not need to install the link again - just follow the instructions for setting it up in
DesignaKnit 8. If you have a new computer and do not have a free serial port, or if you experience
problems with Interactive Knitting, please contact your DesignaKnit supplier to discuss your options.
