Chapter I : Basics Of Petroleum And Refinery

➢ Introduction
➢ Petroleum is a complex mixture of hydrocarbons that occur in the Earth
in liquid, gaseous, or solid forms.
➢ The word petroleum is often restricted to the liquid form, but it also
includes natural gas and the solid bitumen.
➢ The word petroleum, or “rock oil,” derives from the Latin petra (rock or
stone) and oleum (oil) and was first used in 1556 in a treatise published
by Georg Bauer.
➢ Small surface occurrences of natural gas and oil seeps have been known
since ancient time.
➢ The ancient Sumerians, Assyrians, and Babylonians used crude oil and
asphalt more than 5000 years ago.
➢ The Egyptians used oil as a weapon of war; early in the Christian era, the
Arabs and Persians distilled crude oil to obtain flammable products; and
probably as a result of the Arab invasion of Spain, distillation became
available in Western Europe by the 12th century.
➢ There was no widespread commercial use of oil before the 19th century,
however, because no markets had developed for its application, and a
steady supply could not be guaranteed.
➢ It was only with the discovery of kerosine that oil became a commercial
commodity.
➢ The first refineries to process crude used existing coal oil refineries or
were built where oil was found.
➢ Early refineries were simple devices that used large horizontal tanks to
heat oil to separate the volatile components.
➢ The world’s first oil refinery opened at Ploiesti, Romania, in 1856. In the
United States, the first refinery opened in 1861.
➢ Over subsequent decades, the development of electricity and the advent
of the internal combustion engine significantly impacted the demand for
refined products, with ever-increasing amounts of gasoline and diesel
fuels required in place of kerosine.
➢ Air transportation and World War II created the need for high-octane
aviation gasoline and, later, jet fuel.
➢ Today, petroleum refining is a mature industry with a well-established
infrastructure and technology base, employing a complex array of
chemical and physical processing facilities to transform crude oil into
products that consumers value.

➢ Occurrence of Petroleum
➢ Petroleum occurs in Earth’s crust in all the possible states and varies in
colour from light brown, brown , dark brown and black.
➢ Petroleum is a mixture of various Hydrocarbon of homologous
series namely Parafins , Napthenes and Aromatics.
➢ The main elements of Petroelum are Carbon – 83%-87%, Hydrogen –
10%-14%.
➢ Other elements are oxygen, nitrogen , sulphur etc.
➢ Petroleum is more Homologous than rock and mainly found in
Sedimentary Rocks.
➢ There are several theories regarding the origin and formation of the
petroleum.
➢ Some of their are listed below: Thomas Graham was of the view that
natural naphtha must be a product of action under upon the vegetable
matter of high temperature that was in 1843.
➢ In 1845 Chaptal was of the opinion that when plants became entirely
decomposed into vegetable moulds this contain certain oil which
escaped the deomposition.
➢ J. W Drapper in 1846 suggested that the action of natural heat of Earth
on coal.
➢ In 1875, Popoff so that methane could be produced by decomposition of
cellulose.
➢ Hoppe - Seyler in 1886 sword that bacteria could produce methane as is
evident in swampy areas
➢ Treibs in 1934 discovered some of the plant pigments and biological
matter in crores that is microscopic organic remains found in cross
actually prompted API to launch a big project that is API 143 to
investigate thoroughly.
➢ A bright explanation by Mikhailovosky , N. potering and N.C. Anderson
seems to be near the goal. According to them the source of petroleum
was not a definite species of flora as initiated by Engler but the organic
matter of sea oozes consisting of the remains of plants and animal
organisms.
➢ The initial decomposition of the vegetable and animal matter is a result
of activity of microorganisms, later the organic matter underwent
changes due to pressure and temperature of the crest of the earth.
➢ Emphasises the fact, Arkhagelsky proper size to that petroleum took birth
in argellaceous rock ok and reached with organic matter and later
migrated and got stored in arenaceous rocks.
➢ The extension works of P. Truck and G.Petrov in USA characterized the
composition and content of the organic matter in rocks of different ages.
➢ Another theory advocates as a biochemical process yet another sees it
purely as a chemical or radioactive reaction and so on.
➢ However the biochemical theory has been received with some favour as
it is considered with low temperature and pressure and the bacteria of
versatility.
➢ Thus the formation is via a combination of physical and biological
process is rather than individually.

➢ History Of Petroleum Refineries Proccesses

➢ The first refineries used horizontal, elevated tanks to heat the crude oil
and vaporize its volatile components. The hot vapor would rise, cool, and
condense in a batch operation.
➢ The process was repeated at different temperatures to separate the
various fractions. The technology was simple, refineries were easy to set
up, and before long, refining capacity exceeded crude supply.
➢ The need for improved product separation led to the use of fractionating
columns, which allowed the different boiling-point cuts to be separated
out in a continuous process.
➢ John D. Rockefeller sought to consolidate the U.S. refining business, and
in 1870 he established the Standard Oil Co. with his partners.
➢ By 1879, Standard Oil controlled 90% of the U.S. refining capacity. The
number of automobiles and the demand for gasoline greatly increased
following the advent of mass production.
➢ Distillation processes, however, could only produce a certain amount of
gasoline depending on the composition of the crude oil, and so scientists
and engineers searched for new ways to increase the yield and
performance of gasoline.
➢ Thermal cracking processes were first discovered in 1913, when heat
and pressure was used to break down, rearrange, and combine
hydrocarbon molecules.
➢ The introduction of catalytic cracking and polymerization processes in
the mid- to late 1930s met the demand for higher octane gasoline.
➢ Eugene Houdry developed the first commercial process of cracking in
the presence of clay mineral catalysts, which resulted in the large
hydrocarbon molecules breaking apart; the products were converted to
branched paraffins, naphthenes, and aromatics with desirable
properties.
➢ Visbreaking, another form of thermal cracking, was developed in the late
1930s to produce a more desirable and valuable product slate. In the
1940s, alkylation processes were developed to create high-quality
aviation fuels for the war effort, which later were used extensively to
produce gasoline blending stocks.
➢ Isomerization was developed to convert straight-chain hydrocarbon
molecules to branched-chained hydrocarbons to improve the octane of
gasoline.
➢ In catalytic reforming, the presence of certain catalysts, such as finely
divided platinum placed into a support of aluminum oxide, was
discovered to reform and dehydrogenate straightchain hydrocarbons
with low octane into aromatics and their branched isomers with higher
octane numbers.
➢ In the mid-1950s, a process called hydrotreating was developed to
remove contaminants that would damage the catalyst used in catalytic
reforming.
➢ Improved catalysts and processes such as hydrocracking were
developed in the 1960s to further increase gasoline yields and improve
antiknock characteristics.

➢ Composition Of Petroleum
➢ Crude oil is a complex liquid mixture made up of a vast number of
hydrocarbon compounds that consist mainly of carbon and hydrogen in
differing proportions.
➢ In addition, small amounts of organic compounds containing sulphur,
oxygen, nitrogen and metals such as vanadium, nickel, iron and copper
are also present.
➢ Hydrogen to carbon ratios affect the physical properties of crude oil. As
the hydrogen to carbon ratio decreases, the gravity and boiling point of
the hydrocarbon compounds increases.
➢ Moreover, the higher the hydrogen to carbon ratio of the feedstock, the
higher its value is to a refinery because less hydrogen is required. The
composition of crude oil, on an elemental basis, falls within certain
ranges regardless of its origin.
➢ Table 1.1 shows that carbon and hydrogen contents vary within narrow
ranges. For this reason, crude oil is not classified on the basis of carbon
content.

➢ Despite their low concentrations, impurities such as sulphur, nitrogen,


oxygen and metals are undesirable because they cause concerns in the
processability of crude feedstock and because they affect the quality of
the produced products.
➢ Catalyst poisoning and corrosion are the most noticeable effects during
refining.
➢ There are three main classes of hydrocarbons. These are based on the
type of carbon–carbon bonds present (Roussel and Boulet, 1995). These
classes are:
➢ Saturated hydrocarbons contain only carbon–carbon single bonds.
They are known as paraffins (or alkanes) if they are acyclic, or
naphthenes (or cycloalkanes) if they are cyclic.
➢ Unsaturated hydrocarbons contain carbon–carbon multiple bonds
(double, triple or both). These are unsaturated because they contain
fewer hydrogens per carbon than paraffins. Unsaturated hydrocarbons
are known as olefins. Those that contain a carbon–carbon double bond
are called alkenes, while those with carbon–carbon triple bond are
alkyenes.
➢ Aromatic hydrocarbons are special class of cyclic compounds related
in structure to benzene.
➢ Petroleum crude is composed of :
➢ Paraffins: Paraffins, also known as alkanes, are saturated compounds
that have the general formula CnH2n+2, where n is the number of carbon
atoms. The simplest alkane is methane (CH4), which is also represented
as C1.
➢ Normal paraffins (n-paraffins or n-alkanes) are unbranched straight chain
molecules. Each member of these paraffins differs from the next higher
and the next lower member by a –CH2– group called a methylene group
.
➢ They have similar chemical and physical properties, which change
gradually as carbon atoms are added to the chain.

➢ The number of isomers increases geometrically with the carbon number.
While there are two isomers for butane and three for pentane, there are 75
isomers for decane (C10H22).
➢ For paraffins in the range of C5–C12, there are more than 600 isomers
with only 200–400 that are identified in petroleum fractions. Because of
their different structures, these isomers have different properties.
➢ For instance, the presence of isoparaffins in gasoline is essential for
increasing the octane number of gasoline fuels.

➢ Olefins : Olefins, also known as alkenes, are unsaturated hydrocarbons


containing carbon–carbon double bonds. Compounds containing carbon–
carbon triple bonds are known as acetylenes, and are also known as
biolefins or alkynes.
➢ The general formulas of olefins and acetylenes are CnH2n(R–CH=CH–R’)
and CnH2n-2(R–CH≡C–R’), respectively. Unsaturated compounds may
have more than one double or triple bond.
➢ If two double bonds are present, the compounds are called alkadienes or,
more commonly, dienes (R–CH=CH–CH=R’). There are also trienes,
tetraenes and even polyenes.

➢ Olefins are not naturally present in crude oils but they are formed during
the conversion processes. They are more reactive than paraffins.
➢ The lightest alkenes are ethylene (C2H4) and propylene (C3H6), which are
important feedstocks for the petrochemical industry. The lightest alkyne
is acetylene.

➢ Naphthenes (cycloalkanes) : Naphthenes, also known as


cycloalkanes, are saturated hydrocarbons that have at least one ring of
carbon atoms. They have the general formula CnH2n. A common example
is cyclohexane (C6H12).
➢ The boiling point and densities of naphthenes are higher than those of
alkanes having the same number of carbon atoms. Naphthenes
commonly present in crude oil are rings with five or six carbon atoms.
➢ These rings usually have alkyl substituents attached to them. Mutli-ring
naphthenes are present in the heavier parts of the crude oil. Examples
of naphthenes are shown below.

➢ Aromatics : Aromatics are unsaturated cyclic compounds composed of


one or more benzene rings. The benzene ring has three double bonds with
unique electron arrangements that make it quite stable.
➢ Crude oils from various origins contain different types of aromatic
compounds in different concentrations. Light petroleum fractions contain
mono-aromatics, which have one benzene ring with one or more of the
hydrogen atoms substituted by another atom or alkyl groups.

➢ Examples of these compounds are toluene and xylene. Together with
benzene, such compounds are important petrochemical feedstocks, and
their presence in gasoline increases the octane number.
➢ More complex aromatic compounds consist of a number of ‘‘fused’’
benzene rings. These are known as polynuclear aromatic compounds.
➢ They are found in the heavy petroleum cuts, and their presence is
undesirable because they cause catalyst deactivation and coke
deposition during processing, besides causing environmental problems
when they are present in diesel and fuel oils.
➢ The heaviest portion of the crude oil contains asphaltenes, which are
condensed polynuclear aromatic compounds of complex structure.

➢ Sulphur Compounds : The Sulphur content of crude oils varies from less
than 0.05 to more than 10 wt% but generally falls in the range 1–4 wt%.
Crude oil with less than 1 wt % sulphur is referred to as low sulphur or
sweet, and that with more than 1 wt% sulphur is referred to as high sulphur
or sour.
➢ Crude oils contain sulphur heteroatoms in the form of elemental sulphur S,
dissolved hydrogen sulphide H2S, carbonyl sulphide COS, inorganic forms
and most importantly organic forms, in which sulphur atoms are positioned
within the organic hydrocarbon molecules.
➢ Sulphur containing constituents of crude oils vary from simple mercaptans,
also known as thiols, to sulphides and polycyclic sulphides. Mercaptans
are made of an alkyl chain with –SH group at the end (R–SH).

➢ In sulphides and disulphides, the sulphur atom replaces one or two carbon
atoms in the chain (R–S–R’ or R–S–S–R’). These compounds are often
present in light fractions. Sulphides and disulphides may also be cyclic or
aromatic.
➢ Thiophenes are polynuclear aromatic compounds in which the sulphur
atom replaces one or more carbon atoms in the aromatic ring. They are
normally present in heavier fractions. Thiophenes present in crude oils may
have the following formulas

➢ Oxygen Compounds “: The oxygen content of crude oil is usually less than 2
wt%. A phenomenally high oxygen content indicates that the oil has suffered
prolonged exposure to the atmosphere.
➢ Oxygen in crude oil can occur in a variety of forms. These include alcohols,
ethers, carboxylic acids, phenolic compounds, ketones, esters and anhydrides.
➢ The presence of such compounds causes the crude to be acidic with consequent
processing problems such as corrosion.
➢ Alcohols have the general formula R–OH and are structurally similar to water but
with one of the hydrogen atoms replaced by an alkyl group. In phenols, one of
the hydrogen atoms in the aromatic ring is replaced with a hydroxyl group (–OH).
➢ Ethers have two organic groups connected to a single oxygen atom (R–O–R0 ).
Examples of alcohols, phenols and ethers are:

➢ Nitrogen Compounds : Crude oils contain very low amounts of nitrogen
compounds. In general, the more asphaltic the oil, the higher its nitrogen content.
Nitrogen compounds are more stable than sulphur compounds and therefore are
harder to remove.
➢ Even though they are present at very low concentrations, nitrogen compounds
have great significance in refinery operations. They can be responsible for the
poisoning of a cracking catalyst, and they also contribute to gum formation in
finished products.
➢ The nitrogen compounds in crude oils may be classified as basic or non-basic.
Basic nitrogen compounds consist of pyridines. The greater part of the nitrogen
in crude oils is the non-basic nitrogen compounds, which are generally of pyrrole
types.
➢ Pyridines are six-membered heteroaromatic compounds containing one nitrogen
atom. When fused with benzene rings, pyridines are converted to the polycyclic
heteroaromatic compounds quinolines and isoquinolines.

➢ Metallic Compounds : Metallic compounds exist in all crude oil types in very
small amounts. Their concentration must be reduced to avoid operational
problems and to prevent them from contaminating the products. Metals affect
many upgrading processes.
➢ They cause poisoning to the catalysts used for hydroprocessing and cracking.
Even minute amounts of metals (iron, nickel and vanadium) in the feedstock to
the catalytic cracker affect the activity of the catalyst and result in increased gas
and coke formation and reduced gasoline yields.
➢ For high-temperature power generators, the presence of vanadium in the fuel may
lead to ash deposits on turbine blades and cause severe corrosion, and the
deterioration of refractory furnace linings.
➢ Part of the metallic constituents of crude oils exist as inorganic water-soluble
salts, mainly as chlorides and sulphates of sodium, potassium, magnesium and
calcium.
➢ These are removed in desalting operations. More important are metals which are
present in form of oil-soluble organometallic compounds. Zinc, titanium, calcium
and magnesium appear in the form of organometallic soaps.
➢ However, vanadium, nickel, copper and iron are present as oil-soluble
compounds, capable of complexing with pyrrole compounds.

➢ Asphaltenes and Resins : The physical properties of crude oils, such as the
specific gravity (or API), are considerably influenced by high-boiling constituents,
in which the heteroatoms (sulphur, nitrogen and metals) concentrate.
➢ It is therefore important to characterize the heaviest fractions of crude oils in order
to determine their properties and ease of processing. This calls for determining
the percentage of two generally defined classes of compounds, namely
asphaltenes and resins.
➢ Asphaltenes are dark brown friable solids that have no definite melting point and
usually leave carbonaceous residue on heating. They are made up of condensed
polynuclear aromatic layers linked by saturated links.
➢ These layers are folded, creating a solid structure known as a micelle. Their
molecular weights span a wide range, from a few hundred to several million.
➢ Asphaltenes are separated from petroleum in the laboratory using non-polar
solvents such as pentane and n-heptane. Liquefied petroleum fractions (propane
and butane) are used commercially in deasphalting residues and lube stock oils.
➢ The presence of high amounts of asphaltenes in crude oil can create tremendous
problems in production because they tend to precipitate inside the pores of rock
formations, well heads and surface processing equipments.
➢ They may also lead to transportation problems because they contribute to gravity
and viscosity increases of crude oils. In refinery operations, asphaltenes have
markedly adverse effects on the processability of crude oils.
➢ They lead to coke formation and metal deposition on the catalyst surface causing
catalyst deactivation. Resins are polar molecules in the molecular weight range
of 500–1000, which are insoluble in liquid propane but soluble in n-heptane. It is
believed that the resins are responsible for dissolving and stabilizing the solid
asphaltene molecules in petroleum.
➢ The resin molecules surround the asphaltene clusters (micelles) and suspend
them in liquid oil. Because each asphaltene is surrounded by a number of resin
molecules, the content of resins in crude oils is higher than that of the
asphaltenes.

➢ Oil Refinery
➢ An oil refinery or petroleum refinery is an industrial process plant purposely built
for transformation and refining of crude oil into more useful products such as
gasoline, diesel fuel, heating oil, kerosene, liquefied petroleum gas, jet fuel,
asphalt base, heating oil, and fuel oils.
➢ It is an industrial site consisting of several buildings and machinery for
manufacturing petroleum products such as petrol, diesel, kerosene, and the
likes. Although each refinery has its unique features, it is a massive structure with
different components, including the processing and distillation units.
➢ Also, it consists of other structures such as storage facilities where refiners store
crude oil and refined petroleum products. A complex structure usually built on several
acres of land, an oil refinery runs 24 hours a day and 365 days a year. Running a
refinery does not only require employing several people to monitor different plant
units but also demands enough workforce to cope with its continuous operations.
➢ Crude oil in its raw state is of little or no value until we take it through the refining
processes and transform it into various usable products.

➢ Four Types of Oil Refinery


➢ There are four types of refineries – topping, hydro-skimming, conversion, and
deep conversion refineries. Depending on the market a refiner is aiming at, each
refinery has its unique design to ensure their production conforms to their host
country’s set standards.

➢ Topping Oil Refinery


➢ Topping refinery is a processing plant with a simple configuration. Constructed
primarily for preparing raw materials for manufacturing petrochemicals and
industrial fuels, a topping refinery serves better in areas where there are less
refining regulations.
➢ Topping refineries comprise facilities such as tanks, distillation units, gas, light
hydrocarbons recovery facilities, and other necessary utility systems.
➢ However, they produce high volumes of poorly-refined oil because they lack the
required processing units to reduce sulfur levels. Also, their outputs are usually
limited to domestic markets.
➢ Hydro-skimming Oil Refinery
➢ Hydro-skimming refineries refine better than topping refineries because of the
addition of hydrotreating and reforming units to the basic configuration that makes
up a topping refinery.
➢ A refining plant with more capabilities, hydro skimming plants can produce refined
products from little feedstocks as well as high octane gasoline. Also, it can produce
naphtha as well as hydrogen as by-products. The addition of a few other functional
units such as hydro-treating, hydro-cracking, and a few others to hydro-skimming
refineries make them more efficient than topping refineries.
➢ However, hydro-skimming plants may not deliver high-quality petroleum products as
most of their outputs are usually residual fuels. Also, their low-quality output remains
a challenge because more consumers are shying away from sulfur-filled petroleum
products

➢ Conversion Oil Refineries


➢ Also known as cracking refineries, conversion refineries are refining plants that
have all basic units that make up both topping and hydro-skimming refineries as
well as gas oil conversion units. Also, additional units such as Olefin conversion
plant and coking units are what makes them more efficient than hydro-skimming
plants.
➢ Furthermore, it has an additional beneficial feature which is reductions in the
production of residual fuels. In other words, conversion oil refining plant produces
lighter fuels such as gasoline, jet fuel, and diesel. It worth mentioning that light
products are more profitable and environmentally friendly.

➢ Deep Conversion Refineries


➢ A Deep Conversion refinery is a combination os all components of a conversion
refinery, and an additional unit known as the coking unit. The cooking unit makes
it possible to treat and convert extremely heavy crude oil fractions into lighter
products

➢ Refining operations

➢ Petroleum refining processes and operations can be separated into five basic
areas:
➢ Fractionation (distillation): It is the separation of crude oil in atmospheric and
vacuum distillation towers into groups of hydrocarbon compounds of differing
boiling-point ranges called "fractions" or "cuts."

➢ Conversion Processes: It change the size and/or structure of hydrocarbon


molecules. These processes include:
➢ Decomposition (dividing) by thermal and catalytic cracking;
➢ Unification (combining) through alkylation and polymerization;
➢ Alteration (rearranging) with isomerization and catalytic reforming.

➢ Treatment Processes to prepare hydrocarbon streams for additional processing


and to prepare finished products. Treatment may include removal or separation
of aromatics and naphthenes, impurities and undesirable contaminants.
➢ Treatment may involve chemical or physical separation e.g. dissolving,
absorption, or precipitation using a variety and combination of processes
including desalting, drying, hydrodesulfurizing, solvent refining, sweetening,
solvent extraction, and solvent dewaxing.

➢ Formulating and Blending is the process of mixing and combining hydrocarbon


fractions, additives, and other components to produce finished products with
specific performance properties.
➢ Other Refining Operations include:
➢ light-ends recovery
➢ sour-water stripping
➢ solid waste, process-water and wastewater treatment
➢ cooling, storage and handling and product movement
➢ hydrogen production
➢ acid and tail-gas treatment
➢ sulfur recovery.

➢ Refinery Products

➢ Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) : Liquified petroleum gas is a group of


hydrocarbon-based gases derived from crude oil refining or natural gas
fractionation.
➢ They include ethane, ethylene, propane, propylene, normal butane, butylene,
isobutane and isobutylene. For convenience of transportation, these gases are
liquefied through pressurization.

➢ Gasoline : Gasoline is classified by octane ratings (conventional, oxygenated and


reformulated) into three grades: Regular, Midgrade and Premium.
➢ Regular gasoline: Gasoline having an antiknock index, i.e. octane rating,
greater than or equal to 85 and less than 88.
➢ Mid-grade gasoline: Gasoline having octane rating, greater than or equal to 88
and less than or equal to 90.
➢ Premium gasoline: Gasoline having octane rating greater than 90.
➢ Premium and regular grade motor gasoline are used depending on the octane
rating. In addition, aviation gasoline, which is a complex mixture of relatively volatile
hydrocarbons, is blended with additives to form suitable fuel for aviation engines.

➢ Kerosene : Kerosene is a light petroleum distillate that is used in space heaters,


cook stoves and water heaters and which is suitable for use as a light source.
➢ Kerosene has a maximum distillation temperature of 204˚C (400˚F) at the 10%
recovery point, a final boiling point of 300˚C (572˚F), and a minimum flash point of
37.8˚C (100˚F).
➢ The two grades are recognized by ASTM Specification D3699. A kerosene-type jet
fuel-based product is having a maximum distillation temperature of 204˚C (400˚F)
at the 10% recovery point and a final maximum boiling point of 300˚C (572˚F) and
meeting ASTM Specification D1655.

➢ Jet Fuel : This category comprises both gasoline and kerosene and meets
specifications for use in aviation turbine power units.

➢ Diesel Fuel : The quality of diesel fuels can be expressed as cetane number or
cetane index. The cetane number (CN) is expressed in terms of the volume percent
of cetane (C16H34) which has high ignition (CN = 100) in a mixture with alpha-
methyl-naphthalene (C11H10) which has low ignition quality (CN = 0).
➢ Diesel fuel includes No.1 diesel (Super-diesel) which has cetane number of 45 and
it is used in high speed engines, trucks and buses. No. 2 diesel has 40 cetane
number.
➢ Railroad diesel fuels are similar to the heavier automotive diesel fuels, but have
higher boiling ranges upto 400˚C (750˚F) and lower cetane numbers (CN = 30).

➢ Fuel Oil : The fuel oils are mainly used in space heating and thus the market is
quite high specially in cold climates. No. 1 fuel oil is similar to kerosene and No. 2
fuel oil is very similar to No. 2 diesel fuel. Heavier grades of No. 3 and 4 are also
available.
➢ Residual Fuel Oil : It is mainly composed of vacuum residue. Critical specifications
are viscosity and sulphur content. Low sulphur residues are in more demand in the
market.

➢ Lube Oil : Lubricants are based on the viscosity index. Paraffinic and naphthenic
lubricants have a finished viscosity index of more than 75.

➢ Asphalt : Asphalt is an important product in the construction industry and


comprises upto 20% of products. It can be produced only from crude containing
asphaltenic material.

➢ Petroleum Coke : Carbon compounds formed from thermal conversion of


petroleum containing resins and asphaltenes are called petroleum cokes. Fuel
grade coke contains about 85% carbon and 4% hydrogen. The balance is made
up of sulphur, nitrogen, oxygen, vanadium and nickel.
