I think that it is likely that the iceman was involved in combat and he flee from the battle. He
had a wound in his hand which he might have received from the earlier battle. The iceman
rested and stayed at a safe place. He was having a meal when he was attacked from behind
which proves that the iceman thought that he would not be disturbed or ambushed. The
wound was on his back so probably the soldiers wanted to not engage in combat with him. That
is how his body was left there.
