Uniform Accelerated Motion

1. A train brakes from 40 m/s to a stop over a distance of 100 m.

a) What is the acceleration of the train? (Answer: a = -8 m/s2)
b) How much time does it take the train to stop? (Answer: t = 5s)

Solution

2. A race car accelerates uniformly from 18.5 m/s to 46.1 m/s in 2.47
seconds. Determine the acceleration of the car and the distance traveled.
(Answers: a = 11.2 m/s2 and d = 79.8 m)

Solution

3. An engineer is designing the runway for an airport. Of the planes that will
use the airport, the lowest acceleration rate is likely to be 3 m/s2. The
takeoff speed for this plane will be 65 m/s. Assuming this minimum
acceleration, what is the minimum allowed length for the runway?
(Answer: d = 704 m)

Solution

Free Fall

1. A feather is dropped on the moon from a height of 1.40 meters. The

acceleration of gravity on the moon is 1.67 m/s2. Determine the time for the
feather to fall to the surface of the moon. (Answer: t = 1.29s)

Solution

2. How high is a building if it takes 5 seconds for a ball to hit the floor? (Pretend
the object was holding the ball at a height of 1 meter before letting it go)
(Answer: d = 121.5 m)

Solution

3. A stone is thrown from the top of a building with an initial velocity of 20.0 m/s
straight upward, at an initial height of 50.0 m above the ground. The stone just
misses the edge of the roof on its way down. Determine
(a) the time needed for the stone to reach its maximum height.
Ans: t = 2.04 s (solution)
(b) the maximum height.
Ans: ymax = 20.4 m (solution)
(c) the time needed for the stone to return to the height from which it was
thrown and the velocity of the stone at that instant.
Ans: t = 4.08 s, & v = -20.0 m/s (solution)
(d) the time needed for the stone to reach the ground.
Ans: t = 5.83 s (solution)
(e) the velocity and position of the stone at t = 5.00s
Ans: v = -29 m/s & y = -22.5 m (solution)
