QUESTION 3

3.1 Read the following case study on the Blue Crane that is a critically endangered species
and answer the questions that follow:

The Blue Crane lives in dry mountain grasslands. They make their nests on the ground.
They eat grass seeds, shoots, and animals such as insects and reptiles, frogs and fish
found in or near grasslands. In the winter, they move from the mountains to the grasslands
at lower altitudes where it is warmer. Grasslands are important agricultural land. They are
often replaced by crops, pastures, or plantations of trees. Grasslands are also popular
areas for the development of small farms. The Blue Crane can no longer live and breed in
the areas where people's activities have removed its habitat.
(Abstract from: Grade 10 Life Sciences Paper 2 Department of Basic Education

3.1.1 What is the most important part of the Blue Crane habitat? (1)
3.1.2 Explain your answer in QUESTION 3.1.1. (2)

3.1.3 List THREE ways in which the Blue Crane habitat is being lost or reduced. (3)
3.1.4 Why is the Blue Crane listed as a critically endangered species? (2)

3.1.5 Explain how habitat loss and the reduction in the number of the Blue Cranes can
change the energy flow and energy relationships in the ecosystem. (3)
3.1.6 How can the Blue Crane be saved from extinction? (3)

3.1.7 Give TWO reasons why we should conserve biodiversity in South Africa. (2)
3.1.8 In a zoo, animals are kept in captivity and attempts are made to ensure that
the conditions are suited to their needs. Explain the extent to which the existence
of zoos influences people's awareness of the need for conservation. (4)

3.2 Read the passage and study the diagram to answer the questions.
Acid rain is not a new phenomenon. It was first noticed in the 1800’s in regions where the industrial
revolution began. Buildings in areas with heavy industrial activity, were being worn away by rain.
More correctly termed acid deposition, it can fall to earth as rain, snow, or sleet as well as dry,
sulphate-containing particles that settle out of the air. It is a problem that crosses international
borders. Gases from coal burning power stations in England fall as acid rain in Norway and
Sweden, emissions from the United States produce acid deposition in Canada, while Japan
receives acid rain from China. The effect of this fallout is to produce lakes that are so acid, that
they cannot support fish, and forests with sickly stunted tree growth. Acid rain also causes the
release of heavy metals, e.g., cadmium and mercury into the food chain.

(From: Advanced Biology 2; R Allan and T Greenwood. 2000)

3.2.1 What is the more correctly term given to acid rain? (1)

3.2.2 Name two heavy metals released into the environment due to acid rain. (2)
