Background of the Study

The phenomenon of using cigarettes began with tobacco which includes

the highly addictive chemical nicotine, smoking is a difficult habit to stop. The body and
mind soon become accustomed to the nicotine in cigarettes, much as they do to heroin or
other addictive narcotics. It becomes necessary for a person to have it in order to feel
normal (Ben-Joseph. 2019). Most of the teenagers begin smoking for a variety of reasons.
Some people believe it's cool. Others begin because a member of their family or a close
acquaintance smokes. Most people never anticipated to develop an addiction. According
to World Health Organization (2018) Adolescence is a crucial stage when the danger of
substance abuse are at their highest. Smoking habits are often formed throughout
adolescence; by the age of 18, most smokers had had their first cigarette or were already
addicted. Young people require fewer cigarettes and shorter time to develop a nicotine
addiction than adults.

There is debate regarding how to effectively define nicotine addiction in

children and adolescents, with growing acknowledgment that adult criteria may not be
appropriate for adolescent smokers. There are qualitative differences in withdrawal
experiences between adolescents and adults; craving is the most common symptom
experienced by young people during abstinence, while withdrawal symptoms are
minimal. Nonetheless, nicotine addiction develops quickly in young people, with
adolescent smokers reporting some symptoms of dependence at even low levels of
cigarette consumption. Many people who start smoking regularly find it difficult to quit
(Winnall, 2021).

Therefore, adolescents are way more vulnerable to addiction since their mental
state are still developing so as their body. According to adulthood U.S. Department of
Health and Human Services (2015) Cigarette smoking causes severe health concerns in
children and adolescents, including an increase in the number and severity of respiratory

infections, decreased physical fitness, and probable impacts on lung growth and
function.  Most crucially, this is the point at which a smoking addiction develops, which
can continue far into adulthood. That's why it's so much easier to avoid starting to smoke
in the first place.
