A detailed Lesson Plan for Grade 8 Mathematics

I. Objectives
At the end of this lesson, the student will be done to;
a. Solve a system of cartesian plane using two perpendicular lines.
b. Determine the Cartesian Coordinate System X and Y axis, quadrant and the origin.
c. Plot the points in the Cartesian Coordinate Plane.
II. Subject Matter
a. Topic: The Cartesian Coordinate System
b. Reference: Grade 8 Math Module
c. Materials: Ruler, pencil, graphing paper, markers, chalk board
d. Value: Patience, discipline
III. Procedure
A. Preliminaries/Routine

Teachers Student
Good morning, class! Good morning, ma’am!
Please stand. (Students will stand)
To begin our class this morning, may we (One of the students is volunteer and
ask the presence of our god. come Infront of the class)
Any one who can lead the prayer?
Please take your seat (Student will take their seats)
For your attendance. Raise your hand if (Student will raise their hands)
you are present.
It’s nice that you are all present.

B. Motivation/Review

Okay class, before we start a new lesson (One student raises his/him hand and
for today. Let us have first a short recall answer that question)
of the coordinates plane. So, what is a
Cartesian Coordinate system?
Correct! Another one, what is the (Students raises their hand and all of
intersection of x axis and y axis? them are free to express their idea to the
class)
Okay next, where do you see the origin? (Students raises their hand and all of
them are free to express their idea to the
class)
So, the origin has a coordinates 0,0, why? Okay ma’am
Because the intersection of y-axis and x-
axis is zero, right? so It become 0,0.

C. Lesson Proper
Today we will learn about rectangular Yes ma’am!
coordinate system. Are you ready to
listen?
What is a Rectangular Coordinate System Rectangular Coordinate System
or Cartesian Coordinate System? Or Cartesian Coordinate System is
introduced using the concepts of sets.
The Cartesian Plane is composed of two
perpendicular number lines that meet at
the point of origin (0,0) and divide the
plane in to four regions called quadrant.
When we say coordinate, it is repairing ( The students are listening)
to the location so therefore a number
line has only one location.
This is a cartesian plane, so what we can (One of the student raise hand)
see? So, the horizontal line that we can
see the negative and positive integers, so
where is the x- axis and y- axis?
Correct! This y-axis and x-axis, these two ( The students are listening)
axis if it intersect we will have here the
point so what is the intersection of your x
axis and y axis , that’s what we called the
origin.
When x-axis and y-axis intersect for each It will form four region
other? What will happen?
Correct! So that is what we called the Four Quadrants
quadrants. And then given the
illustration how many quadrants?
Yes, we have four quadrants labelled (The students are listening)
counter clockwise, so this is quadrant 1,
quadrant 2, quadrant 3, and quadrant 4.
So, remember that your x-axis if the
number is positive you’re going to move
to the right if its negative move to the
left, in y axis if tis positive your going to
move up and if its negative move down.
When we say coordinates that is Okay ma’am
referring to ordered pair. In quadrant 1
so if the x is positive and the y is positive.
In quadrant 2 has a sign of negative and
negative. For quadrant 3 has a sign of
negative, negative. In quadrant 4 has a
sign is positive, negative.
Here is a Rectangular Coordinate System, (The students will perform the activity
Raise your hand if you want to answer. and points on it, give the coordinate of
(The teacher will post a coordinate plane the points)
with points on it).
Very Good that’s correct! So, we will ( Students will grouped in 5 and perform
have activity. I will give you activity and the activities)
this activity you connect the pionts and
then find the hidden image. I will divide
you into 5 groups.
So, you’re done? Yes maa’am!
Okay let’s see and check if you find the Okay ma’am.
correct image.
You all find the correct image so that you Thank you ma’am!
have 10 points by group.
Give yourselves a hand for a (The students class their hands)
job well done.

D. Application

Bring put your graphing paper, marker, (Students bring their materials)
pencil, and ruler. construct a simple
Coordinart of your own. Indicate the
coordinates of the points you used. A
minimum of 20 points should be plotted.

E. Generalization

Let’s have a short recap of what we just (Students will answer based on their own
discussed. What is a Rectangular understanding)
Coordinate System or Cartesian Plane?
The intersection of the coordinate axes is Origin, (0,0)
called____? With the coordinates___?
The pair numbers (3, -1) is called Ordered Pair
an___pair?
What are other (students will cite sample application)
applications of Rectangular?
Why do you think it is important to (students answer may vary)
understand the Rectangular Coordinate
System or Cartesian Plane?

IV. Evaluation

Direction: Construct a Cartesian Coordinate Plane and plot the following points. A. B. C. D.
E.
(3, -2), (-5, 4), (6, 5), (-3, -7)

V. Assignments
