HIGHWAY AND RAILROAD ENGINEERING

PA -3 (5-231)

Answer the following:

1. Identify the design speed, minimum surface, outside shoulder, and paved shoulder slope

for the following specification of the road:

a. A local road in an urban area with 180 ADT

- Design speed: 32-48 km./hr.

- Minimum surface: 3.60 meters allowable 3.00 meters

- Outside shoulder: similar shoulder without a curb, (exception: needed if there is

drainage)

NOTED PIECES OF INFORMATION:

• 90 centimeters (if four lanes)

• 2.40 to 3 meters (if six or more lanes)

- Paved shoulder slope: Paved and Gravel Shoulder Cross Slope (That has content of

3% to 6% slope)

b. A collector roadway rural area, mountainous, and with 580 ADT.

- Design speed: 45 km/hr

- Minimum surface: 6 meters

- Outside shoulder: 60 centimeters wide and for ADT less than 400.

- Paved shoulder slope: High Type Pavement Cross Slope (that has 1% o 2% slope)

c. A local road in rural area, rolling terrain and with 420 ADT.

- Design speed: 60 km. / hr.

- Minimum surface: 4.80m for a 30 km/hr

- Outside shoulder: 2.40 meters minimum but can exceed up to 3.60 meters

- Paved shoulder slope: Parabolic Pavement Section

• ALL IN TERMS OF PLAVED SHOULDER SLOPE (this varied case to case)

They are varied to case considering the factors of a slope, and a type/classification of

road, lane, and topography. The cross slope is usually paved shoulder in 3% to 6%

noted it was built in purpose epically in water as this is ideal on urban areas. For high-

type pavement cross slopes are ideally especially in a rural area due to fewer cars also it

has slopes 1% to 2%. And lastly, to its parabolic pavement section, this ideal is more on

to its rural area that is usually rolling terrain considering this topography. Despite of this it

really matters the slope, and topography as I understand it can be interchange since

there factor and variables are consider.
