Introduction
During a global pandemic the natural world order changed and is constantly adapting
technologically, mankind spends their time on temporary things causing a deficit in sleep among
other things and this affects them. This affects students particularly in examination classes. This
booklet contains information pertaining to How can the sleep deprivation affect student’s
academic performance
Synapses
Sleep is important in student’s general health especially in growth, development and
neurology. Students regularly fuss about being tired and falling asleep during class. However
most of the complainants were from students who only slept for a short period of time. It was
proven that the human body requires at least eight hours of sleep, lack of this can cause major
mental and nervous issues namely anxiety and major migraines which your body cannot handle.
Sleep forms new pathways for processing information, strengthens memory and increase
productivity. Hence sleep is very important.PS I should be sleeping
Statement of Problem
Sleep for less than the required time is causing a drop in student’s academic performance.
Research Objective
To determine if sleep deprivation can alter students’ performance
Methodology
A recruitment email with the link to the online questionnaire was sent to 35
systematically sampled undergraduate students in the middle of the fall semester. The data
collection period was four weeks. To increase response rate, a reminder was emailed to those
who had not yet responded to the questionnaire by the third week of the data collection period.
To validate self-reported data, students end of term score point obtained from the registrar’s
office. Student identification numbers and email address were required for linking grade point
and credits with responses. To ensure no individuals could be personally identified, student
identification numbers and email addresses were immediately removed from the full dataset and
used only for acquiring grade point and credits. Higher scores represent a lower sleep quality
After collecting the questionnaires and introducing students’ demographic data to a computer
using Microsoft Excel, the relationship between sleep quality scores and grade point average was
calculated.
