RESPIRATORY SYSTEM – IS MADE UP OF ORGANS AND TISSUES IN THE BODY THAT HELP US TO BREATH

- HELP US TO
A) TRANSPORT AIR INTO THE LUNGS
B) FACILITATE THE DUFFUSION OF OXYGEN INTO THE
BLOODSTREAM AND
C) PICK UP WASTE CARBON DIOXIDE FROM THE BLOOD
AND EXHALE IT
RESPIRATION – IS THE TERM FOR THE EXCHANGE OF OXYGEN FROM THE ENVIRONMENT FOR CARBON
DIOXIDE FROM THE BODY’S CELLS.
INHALATION OR INSPIRATION – IS THE PROCESS OF TAKING AIR INTO THE LUNGS
EXHALATION OR EXPIRATION – IS THE PROCESS OF BREATHING OUT
PARTS OF RESPIRATORY SYSTEM THAT ARE ENCHARGE OF SUPPLYING OXYGEN ARE:
1. NOSE – IS THE GETWAY OF RESPIRATORY SYSTEM
2. NASAL CAVITY – IS LINED WITH TINY HAIR CALLED CILIA AND MUCOUS MEMBRANE THAT
SECRETS A STICKY FLUID THAT MOISTEN AND WARM THE AIR AND OTHER PARTICLES.
3. PHARYNX OR THROAT – IS THE NARROW SPACE LOCATED RIGHT AFTER THE MOUTH AND NOSE
4. LARYNX OR VOICE BOX – IS THE ORGAN THAT CONNECTS THE PHARYNX AND TRACHEA
5. TRACHEA OR WINDPIPE – IS THE EMPTY TUBE THAT CONNECTS THE THROAT AND SERVE AS
PASSAGEWAY OF AIR INTO THE LUNGS.
6. BRONCHIAL TUBES (BRONCHI) – ARE THE TWO BRANCHING TUBES THAT CONNECT THE
TRACHEA TO THE LUNGS.
7. BRONCHIOLES – ARE THE HAIRLIKE TUBES THAT CONNECT TO THE ALVEOLI.
8. ALVEOLI OR AIRSACS – ARE GATEWAYS FOR OXYGEN INTO THE BODY AND SERVE AS THE SITE OF
RESPIRATION IN THE LUNGS WHERE IN THE EXCHANGE OF OXYGEN AND CARBON DIOXIDE
TAKES PLACE.
9. LUNGS – ARE THE MAIN ORGAN OF THE RESPIRATORY SYSTEM LOCATED IN THE CHEST CAVITY
BOUNDED ON THE SIDES BY THE RIBS AND ON THE BOTTOM BY THE DIAPHRAGM.
10. DIAPHRAGM – A DOME-SHAPED MUSCLE AT THE BOTTOM OF THE LUNGS WHERE BREATHING
START WITH.

DISORDERS OR DISEASES THAT AFFECTS RESPIRATORY SYSTEM

1. Cough – is a sudden expulsion of air through the large breathing passages that can help clear
them of fluids, foreign particles, and microbes.
2. Colds – is a contagious upper respiratory infection that affects your nose, throat, tissues, and
trachea.
3. Asthma – is a respiratory condition marked by spasms in the bronchi of the lungs, causing
difficulty in breathing. It usually results from allergic reaction or other forms of hypersensitivity.
4. Emphysema – is a condition in which the air sacs of the lungs are damaged and enlarged,
causing breathlessness.
5. Chronic bronchitis – is a productive cough that lasts at least three months, with recurring bouts
occurring for at least two consecutive years.
6. Tuberculosis – is an infectious bacterial disease characterized by the growth of nodules
(tubercles) in the tissues, especially the lungs.
7. Lung cancer – a cancer that forms in tissues of the lung, usually in the cells lining air passages.

THE BEST WAY TO PREVENT DISEASES IN THE RESPIRATORY AND CIRCULATORY SYSTEMS IS TO HAVE A
HEALTHY LIFESTYLE, WHICH INCLUDES BALANCED DIET, REGULAR EXERCISE, ADEQUATE REST, PROPER
HYGIENE, AND AVOIDING VICES SUCH AS CIGARETTE SMOKING AND ALCOHOL DRINKING.
