FINANCIAL FEASIBILITY OF PASTIL REPUBLIC STORE IN

MATI PARK AND BAYWALK

Chapter I

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

Pastil or pastel, is a Filipino packed rice dish made with steamed rice wrapped in

banana leaves with dry shredded beef, chicken, or fish. It originates from the

Maguindanao and Cotabato people and is a popular cheap breakfast meal in Mindanao,

especially among Muslim Filipinos (Punzalan 2017).

Any Muslim gathering like weddings, birthdays, thanksgiving, pastil is always

there where people have different ways of taking it in. According to Punzalan (2017)

pastil has continued its popularity even on Christmas among ordinary Muslims, even

Christians in most parts of Muslim Mindanao region. It’s a poor man’s instant food and

you can have it anywhere in areas where Muslims dominate. In Manila, according to

Polistico (2010) it is sold and readily available in the ubiquitous Halal restaurants and

eateries near the Golden Mosque in Quiapo district and in Maharlika Village in Taguig

City.

Although Pastil not originally a Maguindanaon delicacy, the Maranaos have their

own ersion of Pastil as well. According to Mamaisanged (2017) the Maranaos who
originated from Lanao del Sur and are ideally known for being into business related

matters had brought their version of Pater (also known as paster or pastil) to Cagayan

de Oro City. Their version of Pater is it’s made of rice (usually yellow rice) topped with a

tasty dish could be beef, chicken or fish. These three flavors don’t come together, they

are served separately such as randang (beef or chicken randang), and bakas or fish

with yellow coconut meat. It is then wrapped around using banana leaves to keep it out

from exposure. He said that a Maranao food is always spicy; without chili or other

spices, for them, it tastes incomplete and it`s not appetizing. The best spicy add-ons on

your viand are the “palapa” – a mixture of onion, garlic, chili and other spices that

makes the whole food taste even more mouth-watering. Surely, the taste of local

Kagayanons will get enticed with the new food having the savor of distinct sweet and

spicy exotic delicacy of the Maranaos.

Pastil thought history, from a simple delicacy served in almost every Davao

region, developed its commercial value. This development caused demand from the

pastil vendors and therefore provided jobs and opportunities. At present, it has been a

very popular food in Mati City and sold in some very strategic locations in town like

baywalk food court and baywalk night market.

Most of the Pastil stalls are concentrated in the Baywalk Mati City. Here, different

stalls are owned by different individuals who sell variety of pastil with different side

dishes from the usual siomai, cucumber, lumpia and other food delicacy of Moros.

Every day the Night Market foodcourt is very alive because it is located near the

poblacion and Mati Park and Baywalk. The Pastil is available from as early as 2pm to as

late as 1 to 2 amfor only 15 pesos only. Through this the researcher seen this as an

METHODOLOGY

Research design

Researchers use a quantitative study data from the different respondents that are

based on numerical figures and data obtained is then analyzed for obtaining the results

using different mathematical, statistical and computational tools. Using survey research

as the method of research, an organization conducting a survey asks different survey

questions from the respondents using the various types like online surveys, online polls,

paper questionnaires, and then collects data and analyzes collected data in order to

produce the numerical results (Shenmare, 2019).

Sources of Data

Primary Data

The primary data used survey questionnaire that was disseminated in the

selected four major barangays of the City of Mati. This includes those selected

respondents in the area to consolidate the ideas in the gathered information.

Secondary Data

The secondary data came from the internet, books and other related studies as

the basis of the researcher’s theories of this study.

Research Locale

The researchers had their distribution of products in Mati Park and

Baywalk. The numbers of respondents had a brief discussion on what was the

feasibility about and afterward took the survey questionnaire.

Respondents of the Study

Due to a large number of costumers, the researchers gathered at least 400

respondents from the identified research locale.

Sampling Technique

The researchers will utilize the purposive sampling method in choosing the

respondents. According to Crossman (2020), a purposive sample is a non-probability

sample chosen based on characteristics of a population and the study's objective.

Purposive sampling is distinct from convenience sampling, and it is also referred to as

judgmental, selective, or subjective sampling.

Data Collection Procedure

The respondents of the study are being statistically measured in order to come

up with the saturation point of the total respondents. Before conducting the interview,

the cover letter with the approved signature was presented to the chosen respondents

to brief them about the purpose of the research. Upon approval of the respondents, the

researcher asked them if they could answer the queries in the interview guide. The

researcher conducted a face-to-face interview with the manager to facilitate the creation

of rapport, comprehensiveness of answering questions and allow probing. After that, the
researcher summed up the data gathered from the respondents and interpreted it with

respect to the objectives of the study.

Data Treatment

This study uses statistical analysis to present, analyze and interpret the data

gathered from the respondents it were compiled, sorted, organized and tabulated.
