Disaster Waste Management Training
As we are again to be challenged with various weather events this year, be it typhoons,
floods, storm surge, and heavy rains, we are consequently faced with a secondary
hazard—voluminous disaster waste. Questions like, “How are we going to manage these
wastes? How should we handle these wastes especially if these are hazardous and
harmful to human health and the environment? How do we mobilize the community to
lessen these wastes?” are just a few that LGUs would want to address.
It is for these reasons that the DAP through the Sustainable Human Development
Program is implementing @ Disaster Waste Management (DWM) Training. The course
aims to introduce post-disaster waste as a local governance issue that has an impact on
human security and the environment during and afler disaster events. Specifically, the
training is an opportunity to know what post-disaster waste is, its implications, and the
role of local governments in its management. The Academy will also present the results
of the PDWM study that the DAP conducted wherein Local Goverment Units were
respondents,
The target participants for the DWM training are heads and staff from offices that
have mandates relevant to Solid Waste Management, Disaster Risk Reduction and
Management, and Environment and Natural Resource Management.1.2) development academy of the philippines

Action of Local
Now on its fourth year of public offering, the GIS Hazard Modeling training aims to
increase the capacity of LGUs in planning for potential hazard events, through the
Production of localized hazard maps which can be the basis of the disaster risk reduction
and management plan and climate change action plan, among others. The maps will
provide LGUs with information on hazard scenarios, allowing decision-makers to see
Populations and existing assets or ground operations that may be affected, to be able to
determine safe and unsafe areas and provide suitable directives. This is in line with the
Philippine Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Act of 2010 (Republic Act No.
10121), which is focused on “strengthening the country's institutional capacity for disaster
risk reduction and management’,
This training will capacitate LGU staff to maximize the potentials of GIS in forecast-based
Preparedness planning, and shall empower local decision-makers to make timely and
appropriate assessments and actions.
{n tine with this, we are inviting technical staff with background and capacity to
learn the use of Geographic Information System and Digital Mapping methods, to
attend the training. S/he is expected to be part of the planning andlor disaster risk
reduction management team of the LGU.
IT you are interested in joining the GIS Hazard Modeling Training, kindly fill out the
