STEM 12-F Week 3 & 4

INQUIRIES, INVESTIGATION & IMMERSION

Activity 1

1. A book published in 2015 that is being used by public and private schools.
2. An international journal produced in 2018 by unknown organization.
3. An annual report for 2016 issued by the Department of Education.

Explanation:

Why number 2 is "X"? because it is from an unknown source which is in the rule of the education
in compiling research it is needed an indeed publication to authorized and produce by the
department of education.

Activity 2

RECENCY

 The recency of the excerpt is quite confusing because the date when the study was
conducted is not indicated in the excerpt. But if I will base it today, the references they
used are valid except for one that was from 2010.

OBJECTIVITY

 The materials used in the RRL on the study is fair, objective and bias-free. The RRL did
not favor any extreme and obvious vested interest aside from delivering facts, information
and findings.

RELEVANCE

 The materials used in the RRL bear essential information that clarify and deepen the
issues and concepts. All the materials used in the RRL are all relevance to the study.

CONCISENESS

 The materials used in the RRL have sufficient enough, not too few and not too many and
provides strong insight about general and specific problems stated in the study.
Week 4

The Feasibility of Kangkong (Ipomoea Aquatica) Leaves Extract as an Effective Growth

Enhancer on Broiler Chicken (Gallus Gallusdomesticus)

Poultry farming, the production of chicken, meat and eggs are also known as broiler
production. Chicken production comprises the world's diet that leads to the decrease of broiler supply
in the market. The inventory of broilers, native and improved chickens in the farm are decreasing.
Population is also cause of the decreasing broiler supply.

The supply of chicken meats is not sufficient to the human population that the price of it is
increasing (Hunton, 2005). To sustain, improve and increase the production, farmers used the
commercially and imported feed supplement for the chickens to grow more healthier and far from any
kind of diseases and virus. Farmers choose the feed supplements in the market but their profit in their
business can fall only in the feed supplements. Due to the expensive feed supplements, farmers
increase their profit in business. High demand in the broiler production produces high price when it is
commercially available.

Poultry production is considered one of the most common and very promising agricultural
enterprises especially for lower income farm families. The growth of poultry industry in the Philippines
has been impressive but its problems include inefficient management and the prevalence of many
destructive poultry diseases and parasites cannot be ignored.

Chicken broiler and egg production are the least progressive animal enterprises in the
Philippines. The poultry industry, in fact began as a backyard enterprise but has shifted to the
formation of very large integrated contract farming operations. The growth of the poultry industry in
the Philippines has indeed been impressive but its problems including in efficient management and
the prevalence of many destructive poultry diseases and parasites cannot be ignored.

According to Obina (2011), the chemical composition of kankong is suited for the
enhancement of broiler chickens. proximate analysis on Ipomea aquatica (green kangkong) was
carried out using standard methods. The results revealed 51.36% moisture, 42.18% carbohydrate,
1.70% protein, 2.75% ash, 1.20% fiber and 0.81% fat. The investigation of mineral content in μg/ml
showed that the vegetable was relatively high in iron, magnesium and calcium. Other minerals that
were present include phosphate, manganese, sulphate and nitrates. The vitamin content was
investigated using spectrophotometric methods and it revealed high contents in mg/100g of vitamins
A, B1, C and K. Relatively watersoluble vitamins were predominant over fat-soluble vitamins.
Phytochemical screening of green kangkong revealed high concentrations of alkaloids, reducing
sugar, soluble carbohydrate, flavonoids, while it contained lower concentrations of steroids, phenols,
glycosides, β-carotene, saponins and tannins. The high carbohydrate, vitamin and mineral contents
showed that the plant material can be a good source of nutrient for man and animal food. The natural
endowments of phytochemicals showed that the plant has serious pharmacological and therapeutic
effects apart from its nutritional essence.
