Art Appreciation
BSED 1-E Activity 3

V. ACTIVITIES: A. Answer the following questions as precisely yet thoroughly

as possible.

1. What art form/artwork has changed something in your life? Why? Account
for the experience.

I always consider music as an art form that is truly life changing and
cathartic. I see the beauty of music as something that never leaves us alone.
Whenever I am experiencing trouble in life, music never leaves me alone.
Music comforts me and gives me a reassurance that doubts within myself will
disappear. I am highly attach with music. While I’m asleep, I am imagining a
different kind of world. A world where we can dispose our problems. Leave it
there, and let us meditate on our journey while travelling asleep. Then after,
we open our eyes, it seems like we feel that everything has changed within
ourselves. Do you imagine it?. Even if we are sailing in different boats, I know
you imagine it.

I love all kinds of music even the weirdest music. It’s just like a food for my
soul. I know even if we are different, we are connected by music. You and I.
Music and us. Music taught me this line , “I used to say “I” and “me”, now it’s
“us” now it’s “we”. It’s very true in all aspect. After hearing different music, I
perceive that music reads our feelings and knows how to heal us in the most
tiring situation.

2. Does art always have a function? Why? Support your response. Provide
your own example.

Yes, art has always a function. It is either personal, social, physical or

others. When we believe that the art appeals with our emotions, it can be
more personal. It epitomize a person who has their own perception about the
function of art. The artists express the art to communicate with the audience.
One example of personal art is poetry where the author expresses her
feelings through the art of writing. Social function of art addresses the
society. Example of it is a political propaganda where it influences the
audience to believe in their agenda. Meanwhile, physical function of art is the
easiest to understand kind of art because it serve physical purpose.
Architecture, buildings and sculptures are the most common example of it.
Other function of art can be seen in decorative, spiritual or educational way.
Most of the time an art is very functional in our life and do affects us by any
means possible.
3. If an artwork ceased to have a function, will it remain an art? Why?

An artwork will be nothing if it’s function ceased. It will not remain an art
because it already comes to it’s end. So even if how beautifully made the
artwork is, if it is destroyed or tore down, it will be senseless to consider it
as an art. Just for example, an architecture that collapsed. It is not anymore
an art because it is already destroyed.

B. Look around your house and identify a product of art. In the box below,
paste a picture of that product of art in your household. Trace the beginnings
of this item and identify what functions it has played in history (e.g., a painting
of the Last Supper in your dining room or a spoon).

These old chairs from my grandparents house are bought on year 1986. It
is bought in a furniture store in Batangas. It is not too old and antique but it is
an important art way back then because most of my grandparents neighbors
have this wooden chair in their sala. Every other year, my grandparents
painted it with barnis so that it won’t look old. These chairs are like a
decoration in the living room because of its designs and sculptures. Until now,
it is still functional and we can use it for family gatherings and accepting
guests.
