IDENTIFY PRESENT CONTINUOUS
WHEN TO USE IT?

● Present action (happening at the moment of speaking):


The boys are playing the ball now.

● Temporary situation (happening around now):


I am singing at church today.
GRAMMAR RULES

● The boys are playing the ball now.

To be: Verb-ing: V1 + (-ing)


- is  He / She / It (Present Participle)
- am  I
- are  You / We / They
● I am not writing at the moment.
For negative sentence, we add “not” in between “to be” and “verb+(-ing)”.
● What are you doing now?
For interrogative sentence, we put “the subject” in between “to be” and “verb+(-ing)”.

PAST
CONTINUOUS
I was studying at 1 pm
yesterday.
IDENTIFY PAST CONTINUOUS
WHEN TO USE IT?

● actions or events that happened at a specific time in the past


What was she doing at this time yesterday?

● the background of a story written in the past tense


I was having a terrifying dream
when the alarm clock went off
at six o'clock this morning.
GRAMMAR RULES

● I was listening to my music at this time yesterday.

To be: Verb-ing: V1 + (-ing)


- Was  He / She / It / I (Present Participle)
- Were  You / We / They

● I was not sleeping when you called me.

For negative sentence, we add “not” in between “to be” and “verb+(-ing)”.

● What were you doing at this time yesterday?


For interrogative sentence, we put “the subject” in between “to be” and “verb+(-ing)”.
TIME SIGNALS

1. At this moment yesterday


2. Around this time last year
3. At 7 last night
4. When I was a child

FUTURE CONTINUOUS
I will be studying at 10 am tomorrow.
WHEN TO USE IT?

● action at a particular moment in the future


I will be playing tennis at 10 a.m. tomorrow.
GRAMMAR RULES

● I will be working at 4 p.m. tomorrow.

Will + be Verb-ing: V1 + (-ing)


(Present Participle)
● John will not be working at 7 a.m. tomorrow.

For negative sentence, we add “not” in between “will” and “be”.


● What will you be doing at this time tomorrow?

For interrogative sentence, we put “the subject” in between “will” and “be”.

PRESENT PERFECT
CONTINUOUS
I have been studying all day.
WHEN TO USE IT?

● Actions that started in the past and continue in the present.


I have been waiting for 2 hours.

● Actions that started in the past and have the results in the
present.
She has been playing basketball
all morning.
(She is feeling tired now.)
GRAMMAR RULES

● I have been waiting for 2 hours.

Has + been  He / She / It Verb-ing: V1 + (-ing)


Have + been  I / We / You / They (Present Participle)

● John has not been working recently.

For negative sentence, we add “not” in between “has/have” and “been”.

● How long have you been playing?

For interrogative sentence, we put “the subject” in between “have/has” and “been”.

1. All day
2. All night
3. How long …?
4. Recently
5. Since …. / since yesterday
6. For … / for two hours
7. Etc.
