The Energy Carried by Light under a Wave Model

● The energy carried by light (as a wave) is

primarily dependent on:

1. The _________________________ of light

waves. This is physically related to the
intensity/brightness of a light source.

2. The __________________________ of
light waves. This is physically related to
the colour of the light.

The Photon, The Quantum of Light

● In physics, when something is “quantum” or “quantised”, it exists in ___________________ amounts, i.e.,

only as whole number multiples of some smallest elementary amount.

● In 1905, Einstein proposed that electromagnetic radiation (i.e., light) is quantised and exists in elementary
amounts (“packets” or “quanta”).

● We call these discrete packets of light “photons”.

What are Photons?

● Even today, we don’t completely know about photons – but our present-day understanding of them is deep
within quantum mechanics.

● For VCE physics, photons can be thought of as tiny particles, or “corpuscles” of light

Properties of Photons

→ be h aves like a discrete particle

→ massless ( m=0 )

→ travels at t h e speed of lig ht , c

→ h as quantised ( discrete ) energy

● Instead of being a continuous wave which can have any amount of energy,
Einstein proposed that the quantum of light has a discrete amount of energy.

● This energy ONLY depends on the _____________________ of the light.

E=h f

● Where h is ________________________________.

Planck’s Constant

● In SI Units:

h=6.63 ×10−34 Js

● Or, in units of electron Volt seconds:

h = 4.14 x 10 -15 eVs

Question 1. Find the energy of a photon from a radio wave signal, which has a frequency of 300 kHz .
