INTENDED LEARNING OUTCOME

Identify the principal structure of the digestive system.

The human digestive system is the means by which tissues and organs receive
nutrients to function. The system breaks down food, extracts nutrients from it, and
converts them into energy. Motility, digestion, absorption and secretion are the four
vital functions of the digestive system. The main organs that make up the digestive
system are the mouth, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, rectum
and anus. Helping them along the way are the pancreas, gall bladder and liver.

Explain how digestive system structure function.

Digestion is important because your body needs nutrients from food and drink to
work properly and stay healthy. It starts in the food breakdown in the mouth with
chewing continues in the stomach, where food is churned and mixed with acid,
mucus, enzymes, and other secretions. From stomach, the fluid and partially
digested food pass into small intestines and into the small intestine, where
biochemical agents and enzymes secreted by the liver and exocrine pancreas break
it down to absorbable components of proteins, carbs, fats. These nutrients pass thru
the walls of the small intestine into blood vessels and lymphatics carry them to the
liver for storage if ingested substances are not absorbed in the small intestine, and it
pass into the large intestine, where fluid continues to be absorbed. Fluid wastes
travel to the kidneys and are eliminated in the urine. The solid wastes pass into the
rectum and eliminated thru anus.
