2. A passenger jet needs to reach a speed of 100 ms-1 on the runway for takeoff. If the runway is
2.5 x 103 m long, what minimum average acceleration from rest is needed?

3. A car accelerates uniformly from rest and after 12 seconds has covered 40m. What are its acceleration
and its final velocity?
S U V A T

4. A dog strapped to a trolley is accelerated uniformly from rest, so that after 10 seconds it has achieved
a velocity of 15 ms-1. Find its acceleration and the distance it has covered.
S U V A T

5. A train slows down from 35 ms-1 to 21 ms-1 over a distance of 350m. Calculate the deceleration and the
time taken to come to rest from the 35 ms-1.

6. A train carrying a shipment of frozen food travels along a straight piece of track between 2 stations A
and B. The train starts from rest at A and accelerates at 1.25 ms-2 until it reaches a speed of 20 ms-1. It
then travels at this speed for a distance of 1560 m and then decelerates at 2 ms-2 to come to rest at B.
(Hint: sketch the speed/time graph to help answer this).
SKETCH:

PART 1: speeding up
S U V A T

MIDDLE: 1560 m at 20 ms-1

PART 2: slowing down
S U V A T

a) Distance from A to B

b) Total time taken for the journey

c) Average speed for the journey
