CLASS XI Chapter - 12

THERMODYNAMICS
Level 1
1. Under what conditions the heat evolved or absorbed is equal to the internal energy change?

2. What will be the change in kinetic energy for a cyclic change ?

3. What is a heat pump?

4. A refrigerator transfers heat from a cold body to a hot body. Does this not violate the second law
of thermodynamics?

5. Does the internal energy of an ideal gas change in:

(a) an isothermal process? (b) an adiabatic process?

6. What is the specific heat of a gas in an isothermal process and in an adiabatic process? Why?

7. The door of an operating refrigerator is kept open in a closed room. Will it make the room warm
or cool?

8. Under that ideal condition can the efficiency of a Carnot engine be 100%?

9. How much is CP greater than Cv? Why is CP greater than Cv?

10. What is an indicator diagram. What does the area between P-V curve and Volume axis signify ?

Level 2
1. Explain why the internal energy of a compressed gas is less than that of a rarefied gas at the same
temperature.
2. What is an isothermal process derive an expression for work done during an isothermal process.
3. What is meant by thermodynamics reversible process. Write two characteristics of reversible
process. State in brief the meaning of cannot cycle and write an expression for the efficiency of a
carnot engine. What is the advantage of carnot engine in terms of efficiency ?
4. Derive an expression for work done during an adiabatic process. Show that the slope of an
adiabatic curve at any point is ϒ times the Slope of an isothermal curve at the corresponding
point. (Hint : Differentiate the equations PV = K and PVϒ = K1)

5. Explain the construction and various operation for carnot’s heat engine working between two
temperatures. Hence derive from it the efficiency of the engine.
Numericals :
1. One mole of an ideal gas undergoes a cyclic change ABCD from the given diagram. Calculate the
net work done in the process. [ 9x109 erg ]

2. One gram of water at 100oC is converted into steam at the same temperature. If the volume of
steam is 1671 cm3. Find the change in internal energy of the system. Latent heat of steam = 2256
J/g. Given 1 atmospheric pressure is equal to 1.013 x 105 N/m2.

[ 2086.829 J ]

3. 5 moles of oxygen are heated at constant volume from 10oC to 20oC. What will be the change in
the internal energy of the gas. The gram molecular specific heat of oxygen at constant pressure
Cp= 8 cal/ mol oC and R = 8.36 J/ mole oC. [ 300 cal ]

4. The compression ratio of a certain diesel engine is 15, Tthis means that air in the cylinder is
compressed to 1/15 of its initial volume. If the initial pressure is 1x105 and initial temperature is
300K. Find the final pressure and temperature after compression air is mostly a mixture of
Oxygen and nitrogen and Ƴ= 1.4 . [ 886 K ]

5. Calculate the following temperature of helium initially at 15oC when it is suddenly expanded to 8
times its volume. Ƴ= 5/5 [ 72 K ]

6. Three moles of an ideal gas kept at constant temperature of 300K are compressed from a volume
of 4 litre to 1 litre. Calculate the work done in the process. R = 8.36 J/ mole oK [-1.037 x 104 J ]

7. In a heat engine the temperature of the source and sink are 500K and 375 K. If the engine
consumes 25x105 J per cycle find (i) the efficiency of the engine (ii) work done per cycle and (iii)
heat rejected to the sink per cycle.
