United by the refrain after each stanza, this text relies on passages from Matthew and Luke to highlight
various dimensions of the church’s mission and ministry in the world. It was written for use with this tune,
composed in the village near Bristol, England, for which it is named.

*Prayer of Confession
Holy God, your truth is oftentimes hard to hear. We confess our
avoidance, our purposeful distractions, our prideful arrogance that
keeps us from hearing and responding to your Word. Although you
send us messages and messengers, we dismiss and disregard
those who tell us we are wrong. Have mercy upon us, Holy God.
Open us to hearing those hard truths and help us heed your call to
justice and righteousness. Amen.
*Prayer Response
(Hymn 327, stanza 3)
Eternal are thy mercies, Lord; eternal truth attends thy word:
Alleluia! Alleluia!
Thy praise shall sound from shore to shore,
till suns shall rise and set no more.
Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

Through its recurring phrase, “in my heart,” this poignant African American spiritual expresses the desire
that our professed faith will not be superficial or hypocritical but will permeate the very center of our being,
Invitation to Offering – There’s a Wideness in God’s Mercy Glenn Medlock
so that we may truly be the people God calls us to be.

essential the Christian life, for self-giving is God’s own nature. The tune is named for the village in
