dizi

is a Chinese transverse flute. It is also sometimes known as the di (笛) or héngdi (橫笛), and has

varieties including the qǔdi (曲笛) and bāngdi (梆笛). It is a major Chinese musical instrument that is
widely used in many genres of Chinese folk music, Chinese opera, as well as the modern Chinese
orchestra. As we know, Malaysia is a multi-racial country and Chinese is one of the races in Malaysia.
So, the Chinese in Malaysia are more often active in the Chinese orchestra, Chinese folk music. That
is why the Chinese instrument including Dizi, erhu, guzheng, pipa, and many more Chinese
instrument are a part of Malaysia’s culture nowadays. Let’s talk a bit on how dizi was made.
Most dizi are made of bamboo, which explains why dizi are sometimes known by simple names such
as Chinese bamboo flute. However, "bamboo" is perhaps more of a Chinese instrument classification
like "woodwind" in the West. Although bamboo is the common material for the dizi, it is also
possible to find dizi made from other kinds of wood, or even from jade.

Now, let’s talk about the composition. The composition was written for dizi as an ethnic tune
which share a story about a man who visit to a festival at night. The man experiences the joy and
lively atmosphere. The piece begins with the idea of a night scene which present with dizi solo as
an intro. After that, the tempo goes faster to show the excitement while melody describe the joy
and lively atmosphere of the festival. Then, the slow section shows the people enjoy a
performance by a group of cute children. Last, the melody goes back to the excitement part at
beginning then end with a more excite phrase.
