`Wearing a Uniform Limits Self-Expression

The most common argument against school uniforms is that they limit personal
expression. Kids and teens use the way they dress to express themselves and to
identify with certain social groups. Many students who are against school
uniforms argue that they lose their self-identity when they lose their right to
express themselves through fashion. Just as social groups use the way they
dress to identify themselves and identify what they may stand for.

The Initial Cost

It can be costly to buy school uniforms. Some schools specify a certain

manufacturer or store to ensure uniformity, making it harder to find competitive
pricing. So unlike in a school where uniforms are not required, parents have little
control over how much they must spend on their children's clothing.

School uniforms do not improve attendance, discipline, academic

preparedness, or exam results.

David L. Brunsma, PhD, Professor of Sociology at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and

State University (Virginia Tech), co-authored a study that analyzed a national sample of
10th graders and found “no effects of uniforms on absenteeism, behavioral problems
(fights, suspensions, etc.), or substance use on campus” and “no effects” on
“pro-school attitudes, academic preparedness, and peer attitudes toward school.”
Leading to a conclusion that supports the topic of school uniforms having no real
benefits to academic learning of a child.

Focusing on uniforms takes attention away from finding genuine solutions

to problems in education.
Spending time and effort implementing uniform policies may detract from more
effective efforts to reduce crime in schools and boost student performance. Wearing a
uniform may tend to disrupt the child mentally, psychologically and physically from
learning at full potential.

4. School Uniforms Are Uncomfortable and Impractical

School uniforms are uncomfortable to wear and impractical for learning. This is
an argument raised in the debate against school uniforms by students having to
wear them because the uniform may be made out of uncomfortable material.

Dress Codes Are a Practical Alternative to School Uniforms

A practical alternative to school uniforms is instilling dress codes. This means
that the school can continue to enforce dress standards without forcing all
students to wear the exact same thing. This way, the school uniforms debate can
be side-stepped completely.

They don't cultivate student self-esteem and motivation. They don't balance the
social-status differences that often separate students. And they don't improve
academic achievement. (In fact, uniforms may even be associated with a small
detrimental effect on achievement in reading, his research shows.)

They promote an intolerance of cultures.

Most uniforms are not designed according to the cultural dress of a
population or they represent only one culture. Also, lesbian, gay,
bisexual, or transgender students may become confused if they should
wear a uniform that represents their inner sexual orientation or their
external gender.

● Harping on children about their uniforms takes time away from instruction.
Every minute spent telling students to tidy up their uniforms at the start of
every single class (and it is at the start of every single class) is a minute of
wasted time that could have been used to teach. It’s also systematic bullying
of children and can teach them to become very self-conscious.
