What is discrimination?
Discrimination is the unequal treatment provided to
one or more parties on the basis of a mutual accord
or some other logical or illogical reasons.
What are the different forms of discrimination?
* Age Discrimination*
Eve is employed as a casual employee at a shop. She
is made redundant and replaced by a younger person.
The manager reveals that he wanted to create a ‘new
upbeat feel’ to the shop to attract youthful customers.
* Gender Discrimination*
Martha, a dispatch supervisor, discovers that male
dispatch supervisors are on a higher wage and
receive greater benefits than she does. She is told
that she is paid less because drivers find it difficult
to listen to females.
*Physical Appearance*
Kate applies for a job at fast-food company. She is the
best candidate but is refused the job because the company
is looking for people with a certain ‘look’, that is, a
specified height, weight and build.
*Marital Status*
A transport company with a mostly male workforce
wants to employ an office manager. Rebecca is the best
candidate but is refused the job because she is single and
the manager thinks she will distract the other workers.
What are the effects of discrimination?
According to Cultural Diversity
and Ethnic Minority Psychology,
people who are discriminated against
can suffer significant negative
consequences. General well- being,
self-esteem, self-worth, and social
relations can be severely impacted as
a result of discrimination. It can lead
to mental health problems such as
increased stress, depression, and anxiety.
Now I know more about discrimination, I’m building my
own defenses against it so I could able to fight it.
What are the defenses against
discrimination?
*Self-acceptance*
Embrace your beauty, flaws, strength, and
weakness. This is a way of showing that
you are not affected by their criticism.
Your sweetest revenge is your smile. You
are not born to impress but to express.
*Self-care*
Loving and taking good care of yourself
physically, mentally, emotionally, and
spiritually will surrounds you with people
who take care of you as well. Stay away
from negativity as it will burden you.
Start something good within yourself
and the rest will follow.
*Speak out*
Stand up for yourself. Fight for your
rights. Violence can’t be stop when
nobody speaks. Make a change.
Express your feelings and don’t let
someone treat you like a puppet.
*Strong will*
Even how many times someone tried
to pull you down, if you have the
aim and strong will, you can sore
high. Face discrimination and show
that you’ve become stronger and
stronger as it keeps on bothering you.
*Faith in God*
There are times that you are bound and
full of discouragement because of
violence and discrimination. One
thing pops up in your mind is to
end your life that would mean to
end your sufferings. But when you
keep on praying, God will answer and
give you a reason and purpose to live.
