Group number Group 5

Instruction:
 Adjust spacing to accommodate your answers.
 Strictly submit in PDF file.

Virtual simulation. All are screen-recorded and uploaded in the google drive.

I. Activity Series of Metals

Record your observations. Write “NR” for no reaction, “turned orange/lighter/darker” for color
changes. (1pt each)

1. From the results of your observations, rank the metals in order of decreasing activity.
(4pts)

In my observations, the silver medal is ranked 1 in terms of the least reactive to the four
solutions because it does not change. Copper is second to the least-reactive because the only
solution that makes it react is the AgNO3 solution, and it just makes the color lighter. While zinc
is second to the most active, and magnesium is the most active metal overall.

II. Corrosion.

Record your observations after the metal was submerged for 12 days. (1pt each)

TURNED GREEN,
ABOUT TO BE AND IT DOESN’T NOT REACT TO
BUT MOST AREA
DISSOLVED. REACT MUCH TO THE WATER.

III. Post-lab Analysis

1. Explain why gold and stainless steel are resistant to corrosion. (3pts.)

Gold is the least active metal; thus, it does not corrode because it is unaffected by oxygen
and most acids and is more stable than many compounds, such as oxides or sulfides. Stainless
steel is resistant to corrosion because it has a minimum chromium content of 10.5%. The
oxygen interacts with the chromium; it forms chromium oxide, thus preventing it from
corrosion.

2. Describe the ways of preventing the corrosion of metals. (2pts.)

Corrosion is a deterioration of a material caused by environmental interactions. So, the most

common way is to put a protective layer of the coating such as painting or having a coating of
least active metals such as alloy electroplating.

3. Explain why iron materials rust faster in salt water than in pure water. (3pts.)

Iron materials rust faster in salt water because salt water contains more dissolved ions than
pure water; thus, electrons can move more quickly since rusting is all about electrons'
movement. Iron rust more quickly in saltwater than it does in pure water.
