What is inversion?

Inversion is when you change the order of something

When we see in grammar lessons, you know that in the structure of a sentence subject comes first and
then the verb. Now we are going to look at situations where that is reversed

Of course as you know in questions this kind of things happen, the verb comes before the subject,, in all
questions,, that’s what makes a question structure,, a question structure

However there are some situations which we have this inversion, but we are looking at a sentence not a
question

The thing about inversion is that there are really particular,, there are only a few expressions that you
are going to use inversion with,, you can’t put them just in any sentences you want

Inversion (Verb before Subject)

1. Negatives

Not only did he win, but he also ….

You have but also to go with not only. They are fix expression .. not only, but also ,,

Under no circumstances should you ….

…. nor did we expect him to

2. Conditionals
Should you need any help, …
Had I known you were coming
3. Comparatives
… , as does Lucy
More important than money is love
4. Expressions
Here comes Jane
Man, is it cold outside!
5. Questions
6. Are you sure?

These examples are probably the most you will encounter with, unless you are doing academic writing,
poetry or as such, you don’t need to worry about them. It is a very very formal language and it’s rare to
find it in everyday language
