Summary
The main requirement for
obtaining the CSWA-SD
certification is to take and pass the
on-line 30 minute exam (minimum of 24 out of 30 points).

The CSWA-SD exam consists of a total of 30 questions in various key

categories: Environmental Assessment, Introduction to sustainability and
Sustainable design.
All questions are in a multiple choice/multi answer format.
SOLIDWORKS does not require that you have a copy of
SOLIDWORKS
Sustainability, or even SOLIDWORKS. No
SOLIDWORKS models need to be created for this exam.

You are allowed to answer the questions in any order you

prefer. Use the Summary Screen during the CSWA-SD
exam to view the list of all questions you have or have not
answered.

Download the

design-guide.htm to learn and answer these questions and
to apply your knowledge for the CSWA-SD certification
exam. SOLIDWORKS does not require that you have a copy
of SOLIDWORKS Sustainability, or even
SOLIDWORKS.

Review the information presented in this chapter and

guide in detail and then address the key categories that
are aligned to the CSWA-SD exam.

Sample Exam Questions

These questions are examples of what to expect on the certification exam. The
multiplechoice questions should serve as a check for your knowledge of the exam
materials.
I . Environmental Product Declarations, or EPDs, are an increasingly used method for
communicating sustainability results with:
A. Suppliers and Customers.
B. Engineers.
C. Managers.
D. None of the Above.

2. The commonly referenced definition of sustainable development put forth by the

Brundtland Commission reads as follows:
A. "Sustainability requires closed material loops and energy independence. "
B. "Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without
compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. "
C. "Sustainable development is the use of environmental claims in marketing."
D. None of the above.

3. The study of sustainable development broadly covers these three elements:

A. Land, air, and water.
B. Natural, man-made, hybrid.
C. Environment, social equity, economics.
D. Animal, vegetable, mineral.

4. This answer choice is NOT part of a long-term, working definition of a "sustainable

company" ideal:

Page 6 - 19
Certified SOLIDWORKS Associate Sustainable Design Associate (CSWA-SD)

A. Generates wastes that are useful as inputs by industry or nature.

B. Sources recycled waste material and minimal virgin resources.
C. Follows all current environmental regulations.
D. Uses minimal energy that is ultimately from renewable sources.
5. "The intelligent application of the principles of sustainability to the realm of
engineering and design" is a working definition for the following concept:
A. Sustainable design.
B. Sustainable business.
C. Life cycle assessment.
D. SOLIDWORKS Sustainability.

6. A focus on product design that ensures the ultimate recyclability of a product you're
developing is a sustainable design technique most specifically called:
A. Design for Environment (DÆ).
B. Design for Disassembly (DfD).
C. Life Cycle Assessment (LCA).
D. Design for Total Life Assessment (TLA).

7. The sustainable design technique that promotes systematically using natural inspiration
and technologies found in nature to design products is known as:
A. Biomimicry.
B. Cradle to Cradle.
C. Environmental Management System (EMS).
D. Intelligent Design.

8. The sustainable design technique that can most simply be characterized by the concept
that the waste from one entity equals the food of another is:
A. Cradle to Cradle.
B. Design for Disassembly (DfD).
C. Life Cycle Assessment (LCA).
D. Intelligent Design.

Page 6 - 20
Certified SOLIDWORKS Associate Sustainable Design Associate (CSWA-SD)

9. The sustainable design technique that focuses on re-formulating the raw materials we
use to design out their toxicity and environmental impacts is known as:
A. Green chemistry.
B. Design for Environment (DfE).
C. Life cycle assessment (LCA).
D. Cradle to cradle.

10. The following is an example of green marketing:

A. A brochure of a product painted green, printed on 100% post-consumer recycled
paper.
B. An ad touting the cost savings you can get from driving an efficient vehicle.
C. A label that indicates how many trees will be saved by purchasing this product.
D. None of the above.

I l . A green product is defined as one that:

A. Is made of 100% recycled content and is itself recyclable.
B. Uses no energy or only renewable energy.
C. Has been designed using SOLIDWORKS Sustainability.
D. There is no such thing as a green product - the only "green" product is the one that's
never made.

12. LCA stands for:

A. Life Cycle Analysis, because LCA is an exact science, similar to Finite Element
Analysis (FEA).
B. Life Cycle Assessment, because LCA is an approximate and pragmatic method, like
medicine.
C. Left Cymbal Assassination, because LCA practitioners rove the world destroying half
of all percussion equipment.
D. None of the above.
13. Photochemical oxidation (smog) and ozone layer depletion are examples of
environmental impacts that fall into the following domain:

Chapter Objective
Provide in-depth coverage of the material in the
Certified SOLIDWORKS Associate - Simulation (CSWA-
S) exam. Knowledge to create and modify models,
exam layout, question types and grading procedure.

The chapter is not designed to educate a new user on

SOLIDWORKS Simulation and Finite Element Analysis (FEA).

Finite Element Modeling

SOLIDWORKS Simulation uses the displacement formulation of
the finite element method to calculate component
displacements, strains, and stresses under internal and
external loads. The geometry under analysis is discretized using
tetrahedral (3D), triangular (2D), and beam elements, and
solved by either a direct sparse or iterative solver.
SOLIDWORKS Simulation also offers the 2D simplification
assumption for plane stress, plane strain, extruded, or
axisymmetric options.

Introduction
The Certified SOLIDWORKS Associate - Simulation
(CSWA-S) certification indicates a foundation in
and apprentice knowledge of demonstrating an
understanding in the principles of stress analysis
and the Finite Element Method (FEM).

The main requirement for obtaining the CSWA-S

certification is to take and pass the on-line 120
minute exam which consists of 20 questions.

-Simulation

The questions consist of 4 hands-on problems (13 points, 7 points, 5points and 20
points) single answer, and the rest are multiple-choice questions for a total of 100
points.
Point allocation ranges from 3 points to 20 points, depending on the difficulty. A passing
grade is 70% (70 out of 100) or higher.
You are allowed to answer the questions in any order. Use the Summary Screen during
the CSWA-S exam to view the list of all questions you have or have not answered.
