Problem Solving:

1. What is the minimum value the characteristic impedance of an air-dielectric parallel wire could
have?
2. The distance between the inner edges of the two conductors of a ribbon cable is 4 mm and the
cross-sectional area of both conductors is 10mm2 whose relative permittivity having using
Polyethylene is 2.27. If the operating frequency is 5 MHz, determine its characteristic impedance.
3. A 50 ohm concentric cable is 5 meters long and has a solid copper center conductor with an
outside diameter 4.5mm. If the dielectric constant is 2.1 and the outside diameter of the outer
conductor is 16mm, determine the thickness of the outer conductor?
4. A radio transmitter operating at 10MHz having 100W output is connected to an antenna (R IN =
300 ohms) via 20 ft. of RG-8A/U coaxial cable whose characteristic impedance is 50 ohms.
Determine:
a. electrical length of the cable in wavelengths
b. SWR
c. the amount of power reflected by the antenna
d. the amount of power absorbed by the antenna.
5. A transmission line for which α = 0, β = 0.1Π radian/meter and ZO = 100 ohms is operated at a
frequency of 10 MHz. If the load is 400 ohms, find :
a. Reflection Coefficient
b. SWR
c. Input impedance at a point 7.5 meters from the load
