The goal of this activity is for students to compare consumer products on the basis of their components, use, safety, quality, and cost.

What is a consumer product?

Consumer product is the final good that is bought by individuals or households for personal use. In other words, these are goods that are
bought for consumption by the average consumer.

Chemistry is a vital ingredient in thousands of consumer products. And as valuable as the products of chemistry are, they also must be used
responsibly. Chemistry plays an essential role in many of the products and technologies that people use every day. Just a few examples of products
that rely on chemistry to enhance their usability and performance include:

● Personal Care Products: From lotions, soap and shampoo to makeup and deodorant and many more, personal care products often rely on
surfactants that help make these products easy to apply and effective.
● Cleaning Products: Chemistry ingredients in household cleaning products, laundry detergents and other products can help safely and
effectively remove soils, germs and other contaminants, helping to prevent the spread of infectious diseases and control allergens, such as
dust and mold.
● Sports Equipment: Cyclists, skiers, hikers, mountain climbers and other outdoor enthusiasts often rely on carbon fiber-reinforced plastic gear
and safety equipment, from skis, boots, helmets and shin guards to goggles and other protective eyewear products.
● Electronics and Appliances: From televisions, computers and cell phones to appliances like refrigerators, microwaves and more, chemistries
including silicones, polycarbonate plastics, phthalates and more can help make these products durable, heat resistant and enhance
performance.

Consumer products were made possible because of the interactions of Science, Technology and Society. The Knowledge (Science) is being
used to come up with the different consumer products (Technology) that address problems of the community (Society). For example, Bath soap
(Technology) is a consumer product which we usually use to solve a problem of the Society in skin infection and poor hygiene.
Analyze the table below that shows information of bath soap in terms of its some chemical components, use, safeness, and cost.

Based on the table, some of the chemical components used to make bath soap are glycerine, sodium hydroxide, titanium dioxide, and
Triclosan. Glycerine is added to soap as emollient and texture enhancer while sodium hydroxide is the bath soap’s main ingredient. Titanium dioxide
is added to make the bath soap opaque while Triclosan is added as the active antibacterial ingredient.
