Topic/Title PHOTOSYNTHESIS AND CELLULAR RESPIRATION
Grade Level 9
Time Allotment 60 minutes
Learning Competencies/Objective:
At the end of the cycle, student should be able to: Differentiate basic features and
importance of photosynthesis and cellular respiration.
1. Differentiate photosynthesis and cellular respiration
2. Give the importance of photosynthesis and respiration in the ecosystem.
ELICIT MATERIALS
Give the raw materials for photosynthesis.
What are the by-products of photosynthesis?
ENGAGE
The students will complete a puzzle. (They will form the word Paper, tape
photosynthesis and cellular respiration).

EXPLAIN
Guide Questions: Manila paper
1. Differentiate photosynthesis from cellular respiration.
2. Identify the cell structures mainly involve in photosynthesis and
respiration.
3. Give importance of photosynthesis and cellular respiration in the
ecosystem.
ELABORATE
The students will answer the following questions, and then the teacher Powerpoint,
will give additional inputs. pictures

1. How will you differentiate photosynthesis and cellular respiration?

2. Explain the importance of photosynthesis and cellular respiration
in the ecosystem.
3. Why are plants important in a food chain?

Photosynthesis is the food making process in plants. It involves the

conversion of light energy to chemical energy. Photosynthesis takes
place in the leaves of plants in the organelles called chloroplasts. The
raw materials needed for photosynthesis are water, air (carbon
dioxide), sunlight. The by-products of photosynthesis are glucose and
oxygen.

Cellular Respiration on the other hand happens on the mitochondria.

The materials needed are oxygen and glucose. This process is all
about changing food into a form of energy cells can use called ATP to
power the cell’s function. The end product are water and carbon
dioxide.

Both photosynthesis and cellular respiration are important for

maintaining balance in the ecosystem. These two processes also
emphasize the importance of individual organisms to the ecosystem.
EVALUATE
1. What is the difference between photosynthesis and cellular
respiration?
2. Why are these two processes important to organisms living in
an ecosystem?
