Topic / Title Module 4 Ecosystem: Life Energy
Grade Level Grade 9 Unit 1 Living Things and Their Environment
Time Allotment 80 minutes
Learning Competencies / Objective
At the end of the cycle, student should be able to :
1. Describe how stored energy from food is changed to chemical energy for cell use.

ELICIT (5 minutes) MATERIA

LS
The teacher will play a video that shows the cycle of life energy. Video

ENGAGE (5 minutes)
Key Questions:
1. What can you infer about the video?
2. How is energy released in a plant?
3. How do cells in the human body get energy?
By asking the key questions the teacher is starting to establish the
objective of the lesson.

EXPLORE (10 minutes)

Designing the Class Activity Activity
1. 1. Group the students into four. Sheet
2. 2. Each group will try to find the correct answers out of the anagrams.
3.
4. Arrange the following anagrams correctly.
a. ELCLAURL SREIPARONIT Cellular Respiration
b. YLCGLOISYS Glycolysis
c. SBEKR LCECY Kreb’s Cycle
d. NECTLEOR RTSNAROTP NCIAH Electron Transport Chain
5. 3. Explain how these processes happen in the cell body. Only one
process per group.(Draw lots)

EXPLAIN (20 minutes)

Group Presentation of the Outputs. Manila
Having the four groups and with a draw lot system, each group will find Paper,
out what process will they be able to discuss in the class. Marker
a. Cellular Respiration
b. Glycolysis
c. Kreb’s Cycle
d. Electron Transport Chain
Each group will choose two representatives to present their work in front
of the class.
( The teacher will serve as facilitator )
ELABORATE (10 minutes)
Class Interaction CAI
1. The teacher process the data presented by the students through class
discussion and interaction.
2. The general idea of the activity should be drawn based from the results
of the activity and link to the main topic.
Carbon Dioxide + Water + ATP -------- Glucose + Oxygen
(CO2) (H2O) (C6H12O6) (O2)
Cellular Respiration –is the process by which the chemical energy of
“food” molecules is released and partially captured in the form of ATP.
Glycolysis – the 6-carbon sugar, glucose, is broken down into two
molecules of a 3-carbon molecule called pyruvate. This change is
accompanied by a net gain of 2 ATP molecules and 2 NADH molecules.
Kreb’s Cycle – or Citric Acid cycle occurs in the mitochondria matrix and
generates a pool of chemical energy from the oxidation of pyruvate, the
end product of glycolysis.
Electron Transport Chain – allows the release of the large amount of
chemical energy stored in reduced NAD+ (NADH) and reduced FAD
(FADH 2).

EVALUATE (20 minutes)

Quiz (Modified True or False) Paper and
1. Cellular respiration occurs in the mitochondria of the cells. Pen
2. Organisms release stored energy in food through the process of
respiration.
3. The flow of energy in the ecosystem is two-way.
4. The cytoplasm is the powerhouse of the cell.
5. Glucose is a 6-carbon sugar which is being broken down into two
molecules of a 3-carbon molecule called pyruvate.
EXTEND (10 minutes)
Give a brief summary of how stored energy from food is changed to
chemical energy for cell use.
