Have you ever felt lonely? Have you ever felt the need to talk to someone?
Has the company of someone else ever brighten a day of yours that was not going
so well? We have all experienced this feeling at some point in our lives. We
constantly need to interact and share our feelings with other people.

Every human being enters the world as a member of a social group. This
group life is indispensable to an individual and is necessary for the satisfaction of
human needs and wants.

Content Standard:

How individuals learn culture and become competent members of society.

Performance Standard:

Identify norms and values to be observed in interacting with others in


society, and the consequences of ignoring those rules.

Most Essential Learning Competency:

Explain the context, content, processes, and consequences of socialization.

Learning Objectives:

After having gone through this module, the learners will be able to;

1. Discuss the content, nature, and importance of group.


2. Understand clearly the nature, importance, and influence of group in the
development of the individual.
3. Determine the different factors and consequences affecting group formation.

To the Learners:

This module is devoted to the nature and influence of the group interaction
to every individual. Likewise the elaboration, organization and the bureaucracy that
lean towards socialization.

The every concept of group is one of the important concerns of sociological


inquiry. In order to understand clearly social behavior, one has to study the most
common and most familiar social unit- the group.

Expectations:

In this module, the learners will be apprised on the concept, nature,


importance and consequences of group as part of socialization process. The
understanding of social group is of primary importance to the understanding of
human behavior. People do not live alone; we are all born into and spend our entire
lives within group we socialize.

Included in this module are diverse activities that will help learners analyze
and understand the concept, nature, importance and consequences of social group
interaction or socialization.

BRIEF INTRODUCTION

Groups are made up of individuals. Two or more individuals, just


together, do not form a group; the force of relationship is a must to make
them into a group. According to Brinkerhoff (1988) a group is concept of two
or more people who interact on the basis of shared social structure and
recognize mutual dependency. For a group to exist the individual must
interact with other individual and with one another according to established
patterns in terms of the statuses and roles they recognize.

General Characteristics of Groups

According to Joseph Fichter, a group is characterized by the following;

1. A group has identity and it is identifiable by both its members and


outsiders.
2. A group has a social structure in the sense that each part or member has
a position related to other positions.
3. Each member in a group has roles to play.
4. There is mutual reciprocity among members in group.
5. A group has norms of behavior that influences the way in which the roles
are enacted.
6. A group has a role or a purpose, which are commonly based on the
interest and values of each member.
7. Group activity is depicted towards the attainment of goals.
8. A group has relative permanence, a measurable direction over a period of
time.

FORMATION OF GROUPS

According to Cartwright and Zander, a group is formed because of


following;

1. The desire to achieve an objective


2. To meet the needs of the individual member
3. People are treated alike by others

NATURE OF SOCIALIZATION

1. Socialization is dynamic and lifelong behavior modification process.


2. Through socialization, individual learns to play social roles.
3. It is a type of social confirmatory behavior.
4. The values, belief, and social norms are internalized through it.
5. Institution generally unplanned and develop gradually.

 Interaction/social relation is any relationship between two or more


individuals.
 Society refers to aggregate of people living together in a more or less
ordered community.
 Social Behavior is behavior among two or more organism within the
same species and encompasses any behavior in which one member
affects the other
 Behavior it is the way in which one act or conducts oneself especially
towards others
 Social group can be defined as two or more people who interact with
one another, share similar characteristics and collectively have a
sense of unity.
