animals
● SWBAT explain the life cycle of a pumpkin
● VOCAB: life cycle, seed, sprout, vine, flowers

Instructional Materials:
Slides
Student science notebook

Introduction:
We planted our seeds yesterday and made some predictions about how long they will take
to change or grow. Today we’ll learn more about the life cycle of a pumpkin and see if we
change our predictions.
LESSON PLAN

Development:
● Daily task: observe pumpkin seeds and give students a few minutes to note any
changes.
● Students will learn about the life cycle of pumpkin (seed, sprout, vine, flowers, green
pumpkin, pumpkin). Teacher should introduce the terms briefly and make sure students are
focusing on this information.
● Show video “How Pumpkins Grow”{ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RDIwJHZdclM}
● Teacher will then show slides of the parts of the pumpkin. Slides continue additional
information.
● “Now that we have more information, I want you to make some predictions of what you
think your seeds will look like in 7 days. Open up your science notebook to the first page that says
● One page 1 of their journal they will make a prediction of how their seed will look in 7
days. Teacher should make sure students understand only fill out part 1 today.
● Teacher will discuss with students if having more facts made predictions easier or harder.
● Students will illustrate in their workbook the stages of the pumpkin’s life cycle (page 3).
Teacher should remind students of the various steps.

Closure
● Good job today scientists. We learned to do our research to make better predictions and
about the life cycle of a pumpkin. These are things that scientists will always do. When you are
thinking about things that you enjoy, I want you to think how you could look at them like a
scientist to better understand them!

Assessment:
Summative: Science notebook
Formative: Teacher review life cycle page +/-

Accommodations / Differentiation:
● Slide 15 has all the stages photos together. Teacher can show this to students who
need visual clues.
