Pumpkin Unit Day 3
Pumpkin Unit Day 3
Pumpkin Unit Day 3
Lesson Objectives/Standards:
● 3.1.2.A. Explain how different parts of a plant work together to make the organism function
● SWBAT understand the parts of a pumpkin and their purpose
● VOCAB: tendril, vine, pulp
Instructional Materials:
Slides
● Student science notebook
● Large pumpkin for carving
● carving tool (school approved)
● newspaper/table cloth
Introduction:
● We now understand how pumpkins grow, but what do they look like as they grow. When
we think of animals we may have a chicken who comes out of an egg or we may have a
puppy which is born alive. We know plants come from seeds, but they have several steps
until they are fully grown. Let’s learn about that!
LESSON PLAN
Development:
● Daily task: observe pumpkin seeds and give students a few minutes to note any
changes.
● Teacher will show slide of the parts of the pumpkin. This includes a drawing of the parts
and a word bank. Teacher will also show students a full size pumpkin.
● Here is a drawing of a pumpkin and here is our real pumpkin. I have a word bank up here
with the parts of the pumpkin. Let’s see if we can make some predictions based on what we
know. Teacher will read some terms and see if students can correctly identify them. As they
label parts they know, explain that using process of elimination can we predict what the
remaining parts are.
● Teacher should point out that if students see a word bank on a test, they should use this
same process. “Label what you know first. Then by eliminating you can make better
guesses on things you don’t know. This is a way to be a scientist even when you’re taking a
test!”
● Students will label the parts of the pumpkin in their science notebook (page 4) as they
follow along
● “Now some parts of the pumpkin we can’t see because they are inside. So as scientists we
are going to explore by carving the pumpkin.
● Teacher will carve the pumpkin. Students will be able to touch the various parts as a hands
on activity
Closure
● We got our hands dirty today with our experiments. This is something scientists often do.
Understanding how things grow is important.
Assessment:
Review page in science journal +/-
Accommodations / Differentiation:
● Small group for students who need assistance. Life cycle has a word bank to assist
all students.
